Today officially marks us passing the HALF WAY point of 75 Hard and honestly, the mindset changes are becoming just as noticeable as the physical ones. This morning was another solid HIIT workout, Jen smashed another running session (now officially nicknamed “Forest” 😂), and we’re both still going strong. One thing I’ve really noticed now is how natural the habits have become — especially the water intake. At the beginning you’re counting litres constantly… now the body just expects it. Kanchenjunga Expedition | 17 Tage durch Nepals wildeste Berge 2/2 Im zweiten Teil der Kanchenjunga Expedition geht es für Claudius und die Crew endlich weiter Richtung Kanchenjunga Base Camp, tief hinein in die eisige Hochgebirgswelt des Himalayas in Nepal. Die Landschaft verändert sich komplett. Schnee, Eis und gefrorene Wege prägen den Trek und machen diesen Abschnitt gleichzeitig zum härtesten, aber auch schönsten Teil der gesamten Expedition. Mit jedem Höhenmeter wird die Luft dünner und die Bedingungen extremer. Auf über 5.000 Metern wird selbst das Atmen zur Herausforderung. Claudius blickt hinauf auf den 7.100 Meter hohen Gipfel und merkt: „Da fehlen noch einmal 2.050 Höhenmeter nach oben… unvorstellbar.“ Nach Tagen voller Kälte, Anstrengung und dünner Luft erreicht die gesamte Gruppe endlich das Kanchenjunga Base Camp auf 5.100 Metern Höhe. Geschlafen wird in einfachen Hütten bei bis zu -20°C – mit Holztüren voller Spalten und eisiger Nachtluft im Zimmer. Doch ein noch größeres Abenteuer wartet: Um 3 Uhr morgens startet der Aufstieg in völliger Dunkelheit. Wird das Team den Gipfel erreichen? Gibt es den perfekten Sonnenaufgang über dem Himalaya? Nach den intensivsten Tagen der Expedition beginnt schließlich der lange Abstieg zurück durch die Berge. Die Zeit vergeht plötzlich viel zu schnell und trotz Erschöpfung bleibt unterwegs sogar noch Platz für Flachwitze und gemeinsame Momente. 17 Tage durch eine der wildesten Regionen Nepals. We took a bike ride to explore town, visit the beach and wander around. While still enjoying our time at Jeykll, we toured the millionaire mansions of old. The homes are now part of a historic state park that you take part of with a combination of walking and tram tours thru the property and museum. Still tucked away in the Ragged Islands, we’re waiting on the right weather window to make our next big move south to Colombia… but life out here doesn’t exactly slow down. We break out the sewing machine onboard and get to work repairing our canvas, replacing the clear panels in the biminey, and even sewing zips onto our flexible solar panels to make them easier to manage underway. Of course, it’s not all work… the boys head out and manage to catch a fresh grouper and lobster, which turns into the ultimate beach bonfire catch & cook on a remote island. Nights like this are hard to beat. But the waiting finally comes to an end. A weather window opens up—and just like that, it’s go time. We scramble to prep for the passage, cook up food, grab fuel, and get Escapade ready to head offshore once again. While flipping through some old photo CDs I made years ago, I realized there were more Moments in Time that needed rescuing before those discs completely gave up the ghost. One of them was a trunk restoration Monica and I tackled back in 2003. We were on the hunt for a Victorian era camelback trunk with a feminine flair, and after enough searching, we finally found one—and promptly rescued it from eBay. The trunk arrived in the kind of condition you’d expect for something that had survived more than 120 years. It had the classic camelback top and an intricate stamped metal poppy pattern that was worth saving. Every trunk carries a history. What stories could this one tell? Who owned it? Where had it traveled? What treasures once rested inside? This wasn’t a bargain bin trunk in its day. It was fully clad in patterned sheet metal and decorated with stamped metal accents. There were no maker’s marks, but its style placed it around 1880. The camelback lid wasn’t just for looks—it kept other trunks from being stacked on top of it in a ship’s hold, protecting it from damage. Even more remarkable, this one still had a salvageable interior tray, which is rare. Restoring each embossed flower back to its original blue on white finish took time—and patience—but eventually the work was done, and Monica had a beautifully revived trunk she still treasures today. Ben Doerr, friend of the pod, of Sail Bainbridge out in Seattle, returns to the show to talk about a near-miss he and his friends had recently in Alaska. On what should have been Day 1 of their latest Sail 2 Ski adventure, a mile or so outside the harbor the boat caught fire in the engine room.
