The Clipper Round the World Yacht Race arrived to a huge ceremony in Qingdao, China at the end of Stage 7. Qingdao, the Sailing City of China, hosted the sailing events of the 2008 Olympic Games, and has turned into a major sailing destination, hosting the 2025 Women’s ILCA 6 and Men’s ILCA 7 World Championships which attracted over 230 athletes from 40 nations. The city is known as one of China’s most beautiful, and Fushan Bay is backed by the Loashan Mountains, which makes for a spectacular view as the Clipper Fleet arrived at the conclusion of Stage 7. The crowds were out in force to welcome the fleet, especially Qingdao Clipper which is sponsored by the city. We take a look at the route the fleet took from Subic Bay, The Philippines, and I spoke with Qingdao Clipper Skipper Phil Quinn, GOSH First Mate Otto Kulow and Clipper Race Manager Hannah Brewis, talking about the leg, the welcome, and their first sight of the new Clipper RX yacht, while will be used in the next edition of the race. We then take a look at the overall leaderboard, where GOSH, the team representing the Great Ormond Street Hospital, maintain a huge lead of 37 points at the top, despite a time penalty changing their Stage 7 result from first to fourth, meaning Tongyeong was awarded the Stage win. The battle for second overall is really tight, with Team Scotland on 60 points, London Business School on 56 points and Yacht Club Punta del Este just a point further back in fourth. Things are just as tight between Power of Seattle Sports and Qingdao, with a single point separating them in fifth and sixth respectively. We woke up to an incredibly calm morning anchored in a beautiful bay at Koh Mak, Thailand. With the water like glass and the jungle surrounding us, it was the perfect start to the day. After taking the dinghy ashore, Chloe and I went exploring through the jungle and stumbled upon something we definitely weren’t expecting — a hidden “Love Garden” filled with unusual life-size sculptures tucked away among the trees. Chloe’s reaction was priceless! After that surprising discovery, we found a small beachside resort serving breakfast right on the sand… and it only cost $3 per person. Back on the boat, we hoisted the sails and made our way south to Koh Kood, one of the most beautiful islands in Thailand. The bay there was absolutely stunning — crystal clear water, quiet beaches, and lush jungle everywhere. We dropped anchor, headed ashore, and discovered yet another gorgeous beach and resort tucked away on the island. What is it really like to take delivery of a brand new Seawind 1370 and begin sailing? In Thailand, we caught up with several new owners who have just started their journey with the boat. After years of planning and preparation, the moment finally arrived to step aboard and begin their cruising life. From their first sails and early impressions, to discovering how the boat handles and performs, these are the experiences that mark the beginning of their Seawind adventure. Propellors on sailboats are doubly important. You need your prop to give you the maximum efficient thrust, both forward and reverse. But you also need it to not compromise your sailing ability by inflicting too much drag. So should you pick a standard fixed propellor, a folding propellor or a feathering propellor? They all have specific advantages and some major disadvantages so it pays to do your homework and learn a few technical aspects of how these propellors perform. In this video we go through ass the technical aspects, skew and pitch, talk about drag and the importance of the leading edge. If like us you have a long keeled boat then having a propellor that has good grip in reverse is key to being able to manoeuvre well so we will talk about what you need to achieve that. ► The Bordeaux-based shipyard took advantage of its annual “Lagoon Exclusive Days” event to unveil a world preview of its new flagship motor yacht, set to replace the Seventy 8. ► While the newcomer borrows a few elements such as the forward and central sections of the hulls, that’s pretty much it: the hulls have a much higher freeboard, the deck is completely new, as is the interior. The yard’s aim is to take the high-end approach even further with more volume, even better ease of moving around on board, special attention paid to the crew quarters, and above all, the possibility of maximum customization for each unit. Like the Lagoon Eighty 2, this boat’s sailing version twin that we’re testing in our next issue, the Lagoon Eighty 3 remains a production multiyacht, but the yard is clearly moving closer to the idea of pure customization. ► The new model obviously retains the fold-down platform in the owner’s suite on the starboard side, a veritable private terrace just over the water. Leaving Georgetown in the Exumas, I continue my solo sailing journey aboard Mirage, heading southeast toward three historic islands first visited during Christopher Columbus’ first voyage — San Salvador, Rum Cay, and Conception Island. It was a perfect sailing day - sunshine, steady trade winds blowing 20–25+ knots, and a beautiful downwind course at about 120° true wind. My original plan was to reach Rum Cay first, but offshore sailing often means adapting to the wind. After passing the southern tip of Long Island it became clear that the wind would not cooperate, so I followed the breeze and changed course toward Conception Island instead. That decision turned out to be incredible! Conception Island is completely uninhabited, with crystal-clear water and untouched beaches - one of the most peaceful anchorages I've ever visited. In the evening I shared some stories about Columbus' voyage while sitting on the transom at sunset. The next morning brought a true ocean passage: A straight downwind sail to Rum Cay, with bigger waves now that Mirage was no longer protected by the upwind islands. It was an awesome sail and incredible solitude - just the boat, the ocean, and the wind.
