Meet Den from Barcelona. He used to navigate container ships. Now he sails for fun. And after completing our sailing course, he's got his sailing license and captains yachts with his friends. He also joins us on flotillas now — not as a student, but as a skipper bringing his own crew. That's what happens when you actually learn to sail properly. You go from "I'd love to try that one day" to "I'm taking my friends to Croatia next month." Our April sailing school is sold out, but if you want to join the waitlist or get notified about future courses, DM us or link in bio ;)

15. MCA Category 0 Explained: The Story Behind Grey Wolf II, the FPB 78 Built to Go Anywhere - Be...
In this episode we step aboard the remarkable Grey Wolf II (FPB 78-2) to explore a subject that is rarely discussed outside professional circles: MCA Category 0 certification, the highest operational coding available under the UK Maritime and Coastguard Agency. Owner Peter Watson joins the conversation to explain why he insisted that she be built and operated to this demanding standard, even though it created extra work for the designer, the shipyard, and almost everyone involved in the project. Grey Wolf II is the only FPB yacht in the fleet to hold MCA Category 0 coding, allowing her to operate commercially anywhere in the world, without restriction to distance from a safe haven. For Peter, however, the motivation was not charter income. The goal was much simpler: safety and capability. As Peter explains, the MCA code has evolved over decades and incorporates lessons learned about stability, structural integrity, systems redundancy, and operational procedures. Achieving Category 0 status means a yacht has been designed and equipped to meet an extremely high standard of offshore safety. The discussion also looks at the new MCA coding requirements being introduced for 2027, which significantly raise the bar for vessels seeking or maintaining commercial certification. Grey Wolf II is currently being updated to meet the revised standard, a process that involves both physical upgrades and extensive documentation. Some of the modifications include replacing existing composite seacocks with custom stainless steel valves, installing additional electrical redundancy to ensure navigation lights remain operational even during total power loss, and adding new system shut-off controls and operational protocols. Beyond the engineering work, the updated code also introduces new administrative requirements, from cyber security policies to expanded safety management documentation. While the upgrades themselves are manageable for a yacht built with serious offshore capability in mind, the paperwork required to demonstrate compliance is considerable. Grey Wolf II’s ability to pass the new standards relatively smoothly is also a testament to the original design philosophy behind the FPB series and the work carried out during her construction in New Zealand in collaboration with designer Steve Dashew. Having already cruised extensively across the Pacific, visited remote regions including Antarctica, and completed long-distance voyages in both tropical and polar environments, she has proven herself as a genuine go-anywhere expedition yacht. Her next adventure: a family holiday, a Mediterranean cruising season, travelling through the islands of Greece with children and grandchildren aboard. It is a reminder that despite her formidable capability, she remains at heart a family cruising yacht, equally comfortable exploring the polar regions or enjoying relaxed voyages in the Mediterranean. In a world where many yachts are built for appearance or occasional coastal cruising, she stands apart as a vessel designed, built, and certified to operate anywhere on the planet. Episode 11. In this episode we explore the colorful streets of Mindelo on São Vicente and experience the vibrant atmosphere of Cape Verde. After that, we take the ferry to the island of Santo Antão, often considered the greenest and most spectacular island of the archipelago. Towering mountains, deep valleys, and dramatic landscapes make it a place unlike anywhere else in the Atlantic. Before leaving Cape Verde, we stock up at the local market and prepare Zoé for the next big adventure. After the final checks and last preparations, the moment finally arrives: we set sail and enter the trade winds as we begin our Atlantic Ocean crossing. 🌊 If you enjoy our videos and would like to support us, please consider joining our Patreon crew for real-time updates and exclusive contents, or support us on Ko-fi with a one-time donation. Something I do not usually talk about...something personal to me, deeply personal. My why. Why a sailboat. Why now. I suppose it was ingrained in me since a child. My parents waited, I wish they hadn't. I would have had an ENTIRELY different childhood. I am not saying the one I had was BAD...rather the opposite. It set me up for where I am today. Chasing dreams that are FAR larger than myself. Sailboats are not just a FAD for me. They are my life. Life style. ALL of it. If you are wanting to pursue your passions, my suggesting is not to wait. GO for it, today! This is a sentimental video for my dad, who passed 18yrs ago today. He was a big game fish in the marine industry where I am from, and is missed by so many. The song? Elmers tune, by Glen Miller. YT may strike it...but heck, I love it. Because, he loved it. The thumbnail? A scan of a very old test sheet of photo paper I printed back on film in College...I believe they were 5 second bursts at the time! The image was of my dad and my first sailboat. A 1964 Pearson Vanguard...we restored it together at his shop. Fond memories. Again, it is my WHY. If you made it this far reading, bless you and thank you! Cheers!

Bali 5.2 catamaran review from the people who matter most: the buyers themselves. In this walkthrough, the new owners share what led them to choose the Bali 5.2 and what they discovered along the way. Whether you are considering the Bali 5.2 for liveaboard, coastal sailing, or offshore passages, this video gives you a grounded, experience based perspective on what actually matters when choosing a catamaran for your lifestyle. 00:00 Bali 5.2 Highlights 01:14 What Women Love About the Bali 5.2 02:41 Walk-In Closet in the Master Cabin 03:21 Master Cabin is designed for Living 04:52 Separate Bathroom and Dry Head (Big!) 07:26 What Lead them to this Lifestyle? 07:53 Extending your Sailing Life: Features that keep you on the water for a long time 08:30 The Convenience of the MUXEN System 08:56 MUST HAVES: Electric Winches! 09:13 Quality Finishes that will Last 09:42 Solid Foredeck and Side Decks: What are they like? 10:33 "The Goal is to be able to Sail it on our Own" Flybridge 12:35 "There's no perfect boat, this boat is perfect for us" 14:13 Bali 5.2 Bucket List Before they bought their "Forever Home" the owners had a clear understanding of what they wanted their lifestyle to look like and how yacht ownership fit into their goals. The biggest take away here is that buyers have to know what they will use the boat for: will they sail offshore or simply do coastal sailing? Will they live aboard full time or will this be a few weeks a year sailing boat? These Texans clearly know the things that are important to them and their must-haves and what they can do without or compromise on for their new "Forever Home". The Bali 5.2 features owners actually talk about, among many features, the ease of sailing long term with the self-tacking jib and electric winches, the thoughtfulness of a having a bed in master cabin that didn't make you feel like you were sleeping in a coffin, the real world application and use of the Bali Open Space Concept, and the design of the deck layout built for real life underway when your sea legs are just not as stable as they would be in the harbor. Lots of older sailors leave sailing behind sailing because their boat was no longer something they could safely operate with age. With the clear intention of using the boat for many years to come, the owners point to Bali's features as extensions to the timeline of their lifestyle. Through conversations with other sailors they discovered that many of those who left with their hearts still yearning for the sea did not have many features that could have aided them; features that make sailing more accessible for those who just want to enjoy the golden hours of their lifestyle's sunset.

On 5th March 1936, Captain Joseph 'Mutt' Summers piloted the first Supermarine Spitfire prototype, K5054, from Eastleigh Aerodrome. To mark last week's 90th Anniversary of this event we took to the skies with Spitfire K5054. We were then joined by another Spitfire painted in 16 Squadron markings which acted as a backup. Launch is at 8:30, it’s 7:30 and we still can’t steer our rudders. Our 57ft abounded Catamaran has taken 82 days of non-stop work and today it finally pays off. The timeline we’ve set for ourselves is nothing short of ridiculous - there isn’t much like youthful optimism is there? But we aren’t going to give up now..one final push with the help of our friends and professionals at Ocean Degree! This is the culmination of the greatest challenge of our lives, bringing an abandoned 57ft Kelsall catamaran back to life in just 82 days with an abysmal budget and ridiculously under qualified self-belief...we have no experience with foam sandwich fibreglass construction, nor multihull boat designs, but somehow we’ve overcome every challenge to get to this day. We’ve slept about 8 hours in last 5 days to be ready for the launch and we’ve given this everything - mentally, physically and financially. But do you want to know what the craziest part is? It’s still just the beginning. We still have so much left to do on the boat, but getting off the hardstand and into the water means we’re safe from hardstand fees and can focus our attentions on the next phase. One day we’ll explore the world on this boat, but today? Today we float, we cry and we celebrate the end of our boatyard era! _____________________________________________________________________________ PATREON: https://www.patreon.com/TheNewKidsOnTheDock PAYPAL: https://www.paypal.com/donate/?hosted_button_id=KNLJDGDXPAYAU WISHLIST: https://www.myregistry.com/wishlist/josh-and-phoebe-coomera-queensland/5046646 _____________________________________________________________________________ We would like to acknowledge the Traditional Custodians of the land and seas which we work, play and live on: the Kombumerri peoples. Living aboard our sailboat in Alaska means life happens in chapters. Sometimes we’re working hard in remote coastal communities. Other times we’re sailing to the next job. And occasionally we get these quiet moments in between where we can slow down and explore. On our way toward Port Protection, we dropped anchor on the northwest corner of Prince of Wales Island and decided not to rush into work just yet. Instead, we launched the paddleboards. Within minutes we were gliding across glassy water, exploring a remote stretch of coastline locals call Memorial Beach. Moss-covered rainforest, tide pools full of starfish, unusual rock formations, and a peaceful walk through the Tongass National Forest made this one of those days that reminds us why we chose this self-reliant sailboat life. Sometimes living aboard a sailboat in Alaska feels like we’ve simply moved our cabin to a completely new wilderness backyard for the night. In this episode: • paddleboarding from our sailboat into the Alaska wilderness • exploring rainforest trails on Prince of Wales Island • discovering tide pools and bright red starfish • enjoying a calm February sunset in Southeast Alaska • Audrey attempts her first cold plunge of the winter Self-reliant sailboat life in Alaska isn’t always about big passages or storms. Sometimes the best moments come from dropping anchor somewhere new and seeing what’s waiting just beyond the shoreline. Thanks for joining us aboard Alaskan Gypsy. If you enjoy these day-in-the-life moments from our sailboat in Alaska, consider subscribing and following along with the journey.

Since 2020, Iberian orcas, also known as killer whales, have been interacting with and attacking sailboats along the coasts of Portugal and Spain, often targeting the rudder. More than 500 encounters have been reported, and several boats have even sunk after these orca interactions. In this episode, we are sailing straight through known orca territory on our journey from Sweden to the Mediterranean. While we are out at sea, the first orca attacks of the year start happening close to where we are sailing, and one of the boats belongs to our friends. 😳 With the orca attacks going on around us, we navigate these waters with caution, hoping to make it safely to the Mediterranean without an encounter with these powerful animals. ❤️ If you’d like to become a Patreon and support our work, and get exclusive content plus early access to our videos, click here 👉https://www.patreon.com/c/sailanddoxie/membership We are so thankful for every single one of you 🫶 📍 Route: Nazaré (Portugal) to Cascais (Portugal) 🧑✈️ Crew: Erik, Linn & Nora the dachshund If you're new to our channel, welcome! 🩵 We’re Linn and Erik, a Swedish couple in our late 20s who quit our jobs, rented out our apartment, and set off to sail from Stockholm to the Mediterranean together with our sausage dog.
