If there were any doubts as to the levels of confidence building into the Alinghi Red Bull Racing programme, they were thoroughly dispelled on a devastating Monday session that saw Dean Barker return in his role as Sailing Team Advisor monitoring and gauging the significant improvements that have been made in recent weeks. The Swiss have leap-frogged forward both in terms of technical additions and sailing style. They are a compelling outfit to watch, and the programme is relentless in its intensity. One person in the Alinghi Red Bull Racing team that is always worth talking to is Adolfo Carrau, the design co-ordinator who spends so much time on the water bridging Marcelino Botin’s design office with the sailor feedback. The big integration is clearly the custom cyclor system that the Swiss have installed and Adolfo gave an interesting perspective saying: “Well the cyclors have been on the boat for a couple of days now and a big part of the day was getting the guys comfortable with the new systems and to learn how to choose the systems and to know what they are expected to do in the manoeuvres and straight lines…the system is our own custom system which we cannot tell much about…we have Théry Schir, he's a professional cyclist, and the thing is what we're doing on this boat is very different to what they (pro-cyclists) do as sometimes we need bursts of output during the manoeuvres and then in a straight line you are feeling the accumulator so it's a bit different and that's what they need to get used to in the next few months.” Section 41. Reconnaissance a) As a campaign cost reduction measure, COR/D has mutually agreed to cooperatively implement a centralised reconnaissance programme for all teams for the reconnaissance of all Competitors’ AC75 Yachts, AC40 Yachts and LEQ12 yachts including both on-land and on-water imagery (the “Joint Recon Programme”). b) Each team is assigned a two-person Recon Unit to follow their every on-water move, but it's not that simple. The cameras are supplied and identical for all Recon Units. Drones are not allowed, and they can't get that close, plus following a boat and keeping a camera steady at 45 knots isn't that easy to begin with. c) A three minute interview follows each on water day, and teams must answer the Recon Unit's questions while trying not to give too much away. It's a raw, unedited view of the never before seen behind-the-scenes development of a team and their boat to win the oldest trophy in international sports. #AC37Recon #AmericasCup #Barcelona2024

It has been ten long days since we last saw them on the water but the INEOS Britannia sailing programme came back to life today as the team launched ‘Athena’ the AC40 still very much in One Design mode for a profitable day offshore when the wind finally filled. On leaving the dock just before midday it was almost a glass-out, so the call was made to hunt for breeze some 14 miles offshore, far outside the Bay of Palma. Jeff Causey the Head of on-Water Operations for INEOS Britannia offered a fascinating insight into the team’s schedule over the past ten days and he teased that T6 the team’s LEQ12 prototype that suffered extensive damage in the now infamous capsize, is almost ready to come back as he said: “There's clearly some damage that we suffered in the capsize that we need to recover and we’re mostly through that but it lined up as it turned out the capsize with an upgrade period where literally two days after the capsize we were planning to shut the boat down for these last three weeks anyway so we're nearing the end of that period and hoping to get the boat on the water soon with a handful of upgrades and in the meantime it sort of made sense to continue sailing and get the training on the AC40 and commission that boat so we’re ready to go.” Section 41. I'm excited about this boat for many of you guys. We did some rough calculations and she's about $350k - $400k AUD delivered to Sydney and wow this boat has volume and capability! I can imagine many of you seeing value in this boat right across the Northern half of Australia and also for the Americans in the South you may see this as a great fishing platform or island hopping boat? Keen to hear your thoughts on this and when I get my hands on a 34CC or their quad rig 40CC in Australia i'll run it properly in the ocean so we can really understand how she rides. If you only get time to see a single sporting video this weekend, make sure it’s the one of Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli sailing their LEQ12 in 25 knots of breeze – you simply won’t see anything better. Out on La Sella del Diavolo, the Devil’s Saddle was serving up a mistral from the northern Gods with some vicious gusts thundering in across what ended up being relatively flat water inshore and perfect for the Italians to show the world just what they’ve got. Max Sirena, the figurehead leader of the Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli team gave quite a revealing interview after sailing today, dropping in some hints as to what the team were really up to. Speaking about sailing on a day when many would have stayed ashore and done gym work, Max offered: “…in the last few weeks we sail in not much wind and it was important to go back into the stronger breeze for the sailor, for the boat, and for the designer as well to get data in every condition. I mean like everyone, more or less, in the next couple of months we will make the decision you know was going to look like the big boat and so it's important to be back in the water in a stronger breeze.” Section 41. Cautious of thunderstorms brewing out to the west of Pensacola Bay, the NYYC American Magic team held ashore on Thursday in the AC40 waiting for a curious weather pattern to yield some breeze to get sailing. Eventually the call was made just after lunch to tow out onto billiard-table flat waters whilst the Chase Boats blasted offshore to assess the weather situation where an improving pattern was emerging. This was always going to be a long afternoon… One interesting technique that we’ve seen American Magic do in the AC75 was again apparent in the very early part of sailing today with the team surfing waves in displacement to promote flight. Michael Menninger, the very affable 2017 World Etchells Champion, offered a brilliant and insightful interview after sailing today and talking about the surf-to-fly technique when he said: “When you get any wave angle that's a little bit different than the true wind angle or true wind direction it's possible (to surf) so on port tack today at 90 true or 100 true we were able to do a bit of surfing and take-off. Unfortunately, starboard is the flipside of that, and the waves are a bit more bow-on, so I think it's going to be a feature of just figuring out what the wave angle is relative to the wind direction and then trying to use the waves to your advantage.” Section 41. Conjure Sardinia in your mind and thoughts of beauty untold, idyllic inlets, glamorous sleepy towns, unimaginable summer searing heat and lazy days on the beach, spring forward. Well today, it was anything but our mind’s eye as Sardinia threw everything at Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli from flat calm to full-on. Many teams would have opted for another day onshore, but the Italians are built differently and with talent to burn in the sailing team, they ventured out. Once in flight, it was a different but very tricky game. Don’t try this at home. The fine line between adding height to clear the waves but keeping low enough to stay in control in the 15 knot gusts was super-hard. Francesco Bruni summed it up well in interview afterwards saying: “It was interesting today with the take-off. It was hard to break the barrier because the boat against the waves was really suffering so we were getting some speed and then the next wave would hit, and it was really hard to breakthrough that speed barrier. And then once we had it going it was all good. So, we had to really use all the crew weight to get going but it's always hard to learn about this because it is a lot smaller boat…the big boat should be different.” Section 41. The benefit of having not one, but two, International Moth World Champions onboard an AC40 cannot be understated and what Tom Slingsby and Paul Goodison underlined today out in Pensacola Bay is that they are bringing dynamite technique sailing to this America’s Cup. With the cant sweeps and heel sweeps completed, Riley Gibbs the upcoming superstar of world sailing was rotated in to give him more time on the helm and there was simply no loss in form. The young sailors are coming through fast in this America’s Cup cycle and are set to be sensations in the coming years such is the opportunity afforded by the AC40 pathway. In interview afterwards, Riley was a gem talking through the day saying: “yeah...similar to what we did yesterday with the cant sweeps and true wind angle sweeps and boatspeed sweeps, we wanted to go through that again today on the on the ‘lake’ that we have here inside which has been pretty nice, you know you get almost VPP like conditions to play around in, so it's great to get the results we’re after compared against our tools… different mainsail setups and twist combinations obviously you know we were quite down range on the on the J3 towards the end and deliberately wanted to try that out and see how it compares so yeah just trying to get a better understanding of the equipment that we’re using as far as the One Design sails and you know the whole package really.” Section 41. The relentless Alinghi Red Bull Racing programme continued at pace today with the team launching their repaired AC40 after the last session’s nosedive and near capsize, early in the morning to a Saharan sky. The sailors were at the base early for a dock out at 8.45am to catch the flat water and consistent breeze ahead of stronger breeze forecast for the area in the afternoon. Bryan Mettraux is a key lieutenant of Psarofaghis who features prominently in the crew-lists on a daily basis of both the AC75 and AC40. The sailors, shore team and designers have forged deep trust in Mettraux who first trialled for the Swiss team at the age of 14 and is a key link between the sailors and the technical data analysts. Talking afterwards, he gave a unique insight into how the trimmers are working together saying: “On the AC40 it's quite useful because the leeward trimmer is pretty free so we can have a good talk together to speak about the shape of the leeward mainsail and it's pretty much the same on the AC75 so for sure we are looking at data but it's also about communication on board.” Section 41.

Sport is a great leveller. Sailing is no different. The moment you get comfortable is the moment you stop learning so for the NYYC American Magic team, from the get-go today it was sailing well outside of the comfort zone in order to push and find the outer limits of the AC40 design. All credit to the sailors and programme managers, today they opted for the bigger waves offshore from Pensacola Bay and ran through a whole heap of uncomfortable modes when the option of low mode and blasting in the 12 knot breeze would have been far easier. But the America’s Cup is all about pushing to find that nth of speed or that dynamite technique that ekes your vessel forward and as the waves built, visibly ‘America’ could be seen altering ride height, playing with cant and tiptoeing on the fine margins of control. Speaking about the capsize, Tom was pretty nonchalant as all the pro-sailors are at these events, saying: “Obviously we’re sort of pushing it a little bit more and more learning the boat, and we were just going a bit higher on the ride height and the waves were getting bigger, just trying to see where the limits are and we had a big nosedive, we came out of the nosedive but then for some reason we rounded up and we weren't able to get the board down and yeah the boat slowly capsized over in to windward as we couldn't get the board down so we’ve got to figure out why that board function wasn't working.” Section 41. The upward trajectory continues for Alinghi Red Bull Racing after another superb sailing performance in Barcelona springtime conditions aboard the heavily modified BoatZero. The cyclors were earning their keep, buried away aero-style in the very guts of the AC75 whilst the new communications loop between helms, flight controllers and trimmers looks to be paying dividends. This is a very different prospect we are looking at. A layout almost designed by sailors for sailors, the reduced numbers are making a big difference to initial flight and foil time overall. This has been a superb upgrade. Augustin Maillefer, one of the new breed of cyclors brought into Alinghi Red Bull Racing by way of representing Switzerland at the 2012 and 2016 Olympic Games in the quadruple sculls rowing gave a great insight into what it means to be a part of the Power Group in the team saying: “Yeah it was very nice conditions. It still can be shaky; we are going fast so it can be shaky sometimes but we're going very fast, and it feels quite smooth despite the speed which is quite impressive. And in the tacks and gybes, you can really feel the pressure during the curves. You feel the G’s and it's a nice sensation.” Section 41. This might interest a few of you. She's the Silvercat 46 Lux with the option of inboard diesel or outboard power. She looks like she might be a bit of a weapon on the water and with comfortable accomodation for 4 - 6 people with 2 toilets and showers (Actually 3 but thats another story - watch till the end lol). Couple of features on here that are more suited to the Gulf but I can see the potential for some parts of Australia. Let me know what you think...? To watch the New York Yacht Club American Magic Team in action, on this, only their second day of sailing their beautiful AC40 ‘America’, is to watch a team at the apex of the America’s Cup game. It was almost a demonstration sail on perfect Pensacola Bay conditions serving up a 12-15 knot consistent breeze that allowed the sailors to let rip and get more than comfortable with their new charge. Terry Hutchinson, Skipper and President of Sailing Operations for NYYC American Magic, is looking and sounding increasingly comfortable with what the sailing team are achieving and is more than happy with the boat saying: “Yeah great day…the guys got in about 6 hours of sailing, one battery change so that was all in all a really good day you know we’re going through the teething problems with the boat, not that they’re problems, but I mean like any new boat you have to work through these things, you can't really give McConaghy’s and the whole design structure behind this boat enough props because they did a really good job. I mean it's awesome to be two days into it and basically the guys are out there ripping around Pensacola Bay.” Section 41. Alinghi Red Bull Racing gave the America’s Cup world a glimpse toward the future on Saturday as the team debuted their new deck layout and reduced numbers as a result taking the crew down to eight and bringing aero cyclors into the Swiss mix. Word coming out of the Alinghi Red Bull Racing camp is that Arnaud Psarofaghis is absolutely ‘unbeatable’ on the team’s simulator and as skipper he’s wearing the leadership cap well and very much growing into his new status. There’s a lot of pressure on his shoulders but as one of the coolest, and nicest, characters in the America’s Cup, he’s taking it all in his stride, grateful for the opportunity and determined to lead the team to victory. Who’d bet against him? In interview afterwards, Arnaud was his usual affable self, saying: It was a really good day for us after the stop of the boat in the shed and all the modifications that we’ve done so it was a really good commissioning day, and we could even push to try to do as many manoeuvres as we could because we made some changes so just need to set up everything. It was a really good day out sailing, great conditions bit of swell from the east direction but much better than we could expect.” Section 41.
