The Classic Mariners’ Regatta has been run in Port Townsend for many years and, as the name suggests, is open to all sizes of classic wood boats. I crewed for Ward on his 33ft Garden designed sloop, built in 1948. It was beautifully maintained and still had much of the original equipment. Crewmate John had sailed dinghies in his youth, but since then had only been a powerboater. Of course neither John nor I had set foot on the boat before, whereas Ward had been sailing Aura for over 20 years 23 boats entered, in 3 classes, big, medium and the 26ft Thunderbirds. It was glorious weather; a F3-4 on Saturday, a bit less on Sunday. We couldn't help but wonder what was stopping the owners of the hundreds of other boats left in the marinas from going out. The racing was of course dominated by Martha, one of the local schooners, it was built in 1907. See here for more http://www.schoonermartha.org/ I was a bit too busy to take much video during the races themselves, except we all stopped to watch Martha when we kept crossing tacks as we beat out to sea during the long distance race. Ward was very pleased that after the first two round the cans races on Saturday we had two first places on handicap and even crossed the line first in one race. So the pressure was on for the long race on Sunday. A slow beat out against a very strong tide meant the local boats gained hugely by playing the back eddies. There was considerable confusion as to the actual course as the PRO changed it by radio, unfortunately a broadcast some racers didn't hear. We did, but even so we played safe on the run home and rounded every mark "just in case". It didn't matter - we were so far ahead we were still first over the line and first on handicap in Class B. We came second overall behind the best sailed local boat "Sparkle" and easily won Class B with three bullets. My nerves for the Pacific Crossing (the 20-30 day’er) have been getting more and more intense. Most nights, for the past few weeks I have been having the most strangest dreams and unsettled sleeps. But I am really looking forward to the challenge of getting across such a large chunk of ocean! For the next week in Isla Isabella, we explore the beautiful island by bike and boat. We dive Los Tuneles which are a bunch of beautiful caves in shallow waters that are just FILLED with sea life of every kind. Couldn’t recommend the dive site highly enough, you can even take Grandma & Grandpa/toddlers!! I can’t name another spot I’ve snorkelled, where you can see all of these animals in above 5m of water. Next week, we prepare for the big crossing and wave goodbye to land for a few weeks….. I’m really looking forward to sharing this experience with you all. We started to get the dreaded HPF error on our rear air conditioning unit. Typically this is from a low water flow but we had already cleaned and verified that the strainers were clean. It was time to see what kind of funk lived in these lines :) This is a how to video to show how to flush the water circulation lines on your boat hardware with simple household and store bought products. We used Muriatic acid, but others swear by vinegar as well. Here is a tutorial on how we do this and it is pretty easy and takes about 15 minutes of work and about 30 minutes of letting the solution do it's magic in the lines. Day 2 of the Cedar Point Yacht Club One Design Regatta brought wind and excitement to the fleets! Two Race courses got in more races and the cream rose to the top.

A small community decided to protect turtles nesting grounds on one of their small-uninhabited islands. So far without any outside support … They would like to develop some simple accommodation so visitors can stay overnight to see tutles laying their eggs. Impi is a catamaran sailing around the world having left South Africa some years ago. Now having crossed the Pacific Ocean it is time to haul Impi oput at Norsand Boat Yard and Marina in Whangarei right here in New Zealand. Here we get busy with upgrading items to the boat including the replacement of the Yanmar SD50 sail drives to SD 60 saildrives (to follow in Part 2 of this series) We also return to South Africa for our sons wedding and to visit family and friends - let alone much needed business to be done. Ana's sister Kris arrives from Belgium to spend a few days with us and so we tour around the Cape Peninsula with her and lets not forget poor Leon who has lost his fingers and a toe in an unfortunate incident. This event has a remarkable effect on us as we struggle to cope with the incident more than he does - what a wonderful man! So folks - more of a story for family and friends and a little more of our background in this one - but we like to share and you are always welcome to join in :)
