But is it really that bad? In this episode, after crossing the Southern Atlantic, we explore the historic heart of the city, ride the famous Elevator Lacerda and wander the colourful streets of Pelourinho. But the biggest surprise? Sailing across the bay to Bom Jesus Island, the locals welcomed us with open arms, inviting us into their homes and sharing food with us. We’ve been living aboard our sailboat for 7yrs and in the Bahamas now for the past three months while Ryan’s been working with the Boy Scouts teaching sailing and running adventures out of the Abacos. But on his final trip, news hit that a Category 5 hurricane was tracking straight for us! With little time to prepare, Brittni scrambled at the house to get everything ready while Ryan was still offshore. We packed up, got the boat ready and braced ourselves. Thankfully, the storm veered away at the last moment… but it was a clear sign it was definitely time to leave! As soon as it passed, we set sail with our baby Oakley and dog Jackson onboard dodging squalls and heavy weather on the way out of the Bahamas. After months of planning, it’s finally time to move our 43ft aluminum sailboat under a covered shed! 💪⛵️ This is a huge milestone that allows us to get back to work on our dream project and push forward with the build of this expedition boat that will one day cross oceans. 🌎✨ 👨‍👩‍👦 We are Duca and Roberta (and now baby boy Oli) a Brazilian couple that during a sabbatical trip in 2016 decided to follow our dream. So, we created "Odd Life Crafting", a project composed of many smaller projects that we call seasons. The first one was the creation of Odd Life Crafting. The idea was to build a metal boat to be able to travel the world taking our house with us, but we didn't have money for that. So, we started the next season: we built a tiny shipping container house with no prior experience in building to gain some skills to build a boat. When we were almost finished we found a boat 700km away from our hometown that was neglected for over 22 years and we spent 2 years refitting her (Season 3). On the season 4 we sailed for 2 years (exploring the Brazilian coast and part of the Caribbean), we sold our boat and we moved to Europe. The last season we are starting to build a new aluminum 43ft sailboat and a new life. We hope to inspire others to follow their dreams. It’s Respect for the Aged Day here in Japan 🇯🇵—a national holiday that began back in 1947 as “Old Folks Day” before being renamed in the ’60s. I just learned that you officially qualify as “aged” here at 70… which makes me a newbie to the celebration! Here in the village of Buren, where I’m moored with my sailboat Wahine, they’ve welcomed me into their community festival. And in true local style, the holiday is combined with their love of Sumo—complete with a parade where, yes, I’ll be joining in. This is Day 1 of my 30-day solo journey through Japan, exploring longevity, resilience, and the traditions that shape aging well.

Nous quittons notre mouillage avec 1 ris dans la grand-voile, 27 nœuds en rafales, direction la plage de la Garonne au Pradet pour s’abriter du vent d’est annoncé. Pour éviter un empannage, on tente un virement à 270°… pas franchement une réussite, et on termine la manœuvre avec un petit coup de moteur ! Entre Giens et Le Pradet, on se lance dans une opération qu’il ne faudrait normalement jamais faire : changer d’ancre en navigation. Mais avec plusieurs jours de vent prévus, c’est le moment de mettre à l’épreuve notre nouvelle Spade S140, réputée comme l’une des meilleures ancres au monde. Le lendemain, des pluies torrentielles s’abattent sur nous : on en profite pour commencer un grand nettoyage du bateau 🌧️🧽, qu'on terminera au port de Toulon. Et comme si ça ne suffisait pas, c’est l'anniversaire de JS 🎂… Pour terminer, on s'abrite d'un coup d'ouest, mais tous les bateaux autour de nous dérapent. We’re hauled out in northern Borneo to kick off our repower. The old engine is out, the new bed is in—today we start the install with the ZF SD-12 saildrive before bringing our Nanni N4.65 aboard. In this episode: Why we had to separate the saildrive (tiny engine room!) and lower the upper unit using a roof pad-eye.Catching the splined coupling sleeve and protecting the diaphragm and a star-pattern, stepped torque on the clamp-ring bolts for even compression. What we like about the SD-12: solid build, double-seal diaphragm, service tube for in-boat oil changes Plus a little insight into our family life here in the sleepy fishing town of Kudat.
