We finally bought a boat!! - Dufour 455 Grand Large - dream boat! In this weeks episode we are finally buying a boat! We bought a boat! First we enjoy crabs with Eddy and Hilde at their summer house outside of Oslo before we fly to Barcelona, get a rental car and drive to Valencia for sailboat shopping. There we are looking at a Dufour 455 Grand Large from 2007 named Windbreaker from Bergen which is about to become Mermaid of Oslo. We go for a test sail and sign the contract after test sailing! My new home on the water as a liveaboard sailing youtuber with my own youtube sailing channel We had backup plans to see more boats, but we skipped these plans and spent a lovely day on the beach of Peniscola (funny name) on our way back before we end up on the lovely B-Hotel in Barcelona with a rooftop pool! Heading into town one night to play trivia with friends, we find there is a shipwreck on the north end of the island, and stroll up the beach to take a look. Lodged in the sand is a Westsail 32 named Ellipsis that had ended up there the night before after encountering some heavy weather between Puerto Rico and St. Augustine. We only had a few details at the time, but knew it was two men and two dogs on board, and although the boat was now meant to be salvaged, everyone on board was ok. The next day the two of us do a little more wandering around town and take a look at the world famous Elbow Reef Lighthouse; the last kerosene burning lighthouse in the world. Upon arriving to the Hurricane Hole Marina in Nassau, we were greeted by a man by the name of John Conway. He was talking on his cell phone as we were tying up our boat. After finishing his call, he walked over to us and asked in amazement if we had really come from the Northwest. We told him yes, and gave him a brief overview of all that we had gone through to get there. He was very impressed and told us that he too was from the Northwest and that he is a manager at a very elite resort just up the road! He then personally invited us to visit! He made arrangements with the security at the One & Only Ocean Club and told us that he would have free passes waiting for us at the main building! We couldn't believe it! We knew absolutely NOTHING about this resort and had no idea of what to expect once there. The One & Only Ocean Club turned out to be EXTREMELY FANCY! We were blown away by how immaculate the buildings and general grounds of the resort were! We have never seen any place as beautiful as this! The beaches were pristine with white sand and the most beautiful blue water we had ever seen! There were several pools available to use and plenty of sitting areas to relax and watch the waves on the beach! They have an incredible restaurant with food that looked and smelled delicious! We unfortunately were feeling poor with paying the slip fee at the marina, so we didn't buy anything to eat, but man if we ever go back, it will be top on our list of things to try! We were so grateful to use the showers located in the fitness center of the resort and couldn't believe how HUGE, clean and fancy the bathrooms were. This was no typical public locker room style bathroom you would find in the U.S. No this was more like walking into a private spa! They even provided everything we could ever need! For example, there were new "fancy" razors for shaving, creams, lotions, shampoo, conditioner, hair brushes, tooth brush’s and tooth paste… you name it! They even had bottled water! The towels at the sinks were practically real cloth and we found it hard to toss them into the trash after drying our hands! It kinda felt like walking into someone else's home and taking and using all of the "new" stuff with out asking! After spending the day at the Atlantis Water Park and the One & Only Ocean Club we decided we would go ahead and spent one more night at the Hurricane Hole Marina. We then left Nassau and made our way East to Rose Island not too far away. The plan is to stay there for a few days while we wait for a favorable wind to take us to the Exumas! We go for a scooter ride around the island on what could fairly well be described as a lighthouse tour headed by Christian (the inspector). You don't see it in the videos but Logan absolutely refused to keep up with everyone and would arrive at least 10 minutes late to each lighthouse much to everyones amusement. Probably the most amazing thing from my point of view was that Simone turned out to be a cosmologist but was so humble that we only found out on the last day after Pete prompted her. I know I have written about this before but I really found that to be incredible, I wish I had gotten the chance to speak to her more about it. Anyway the place in the picture above is the type of place you dream about when your planning your trip around the mediterranean. Shear cliff face, tied off to the rocks, previously occupied by ancient civilisations, protected from the Mistral, snorkelling heaven, enough boats near by to make friends but not so many for it to feel... occupied or sort of, spoiled. It was the perfect spot to take all the crew and to meet up with Jeff. Special mention for poor old Tomas who sailed his boat over from Barcelona and put on a feast for everyone on one of the nights but we got no footage of it because everyone was either too tired or having too much fun to even pick up a camera. We had little wind for the last 1000NM sail across the Atlantic and we sadly lost our amazing spinnaker which we were all very upset about.
