We transit the Providence Channel through the Bahamas and enter the Gulf Stream Thursday morning, Feb. 1. By the strong north setting current we end up closing the Florida coast just north of Ft. Lauderdale and I discover that you have to get within the 100-foot line in order to escape the current and sail south to Cape Florida. We enter Biscayne Bay after dark and drop anchor. A few days later we work our way into the mooring field at Dinner Key Marina by a winding route that obliges us to put the outboard on the dinghy and use it as a push boat.

Until now, family and friends have always sailed with us on our Tartan 37, but this time we sail her by ourselves, up to Milwaukee and back. Leaving the dock at our marina in Racine is tricky. The dock is on the Root River (which frequently floods and drains), and is situated only a couple hundred feet from a drawbridge, which is just before another drawbridge. Making sure to consider all the potential curve balls — a bridge not opening, the current and/or wind pushing the boat, other boats, kayakers — while maneuvering a 37-foot boat in a 60-foot wide river is rather nerve-wracking. Kirk, thankfully, has driven boats since he was twelve, and steers out of the river and into Lake Michigan without incident. In Milwaukee we meet up with our parents, check out the Third Ward, and spend an evening at Summerfest. The sail back to Racine is a roller coaster ride, as wind from the night before has whipped up the waves on Lake Michigan. | Season 2 | Episode 20 | This episode finds us at Cueva Valdez Anchorage where after dragging anchor in the night and having trouble getting my engine started to reset the hook I made my way over to the lobster boat Miss Mae and was greeted with a warm welcome and some life saving motor oil! After which I explored the sea caves ashore and prepared to head out to my next anchorage. The last week of 2017 I took an amazing solo sailing trip to the Channel Islands. I visit six anchorages on Santa Cruz Island before sailing for Catalina Island and tying up in Isthmus Cove for New Years Eve. We sailed back on New Years Day enjoying sunshine, great wind and thousands of dolphins. While I was on my trip I started my first podcast and the first episode is up online now. The podcast is titled “A STERN VIEW” and is something of a cruising guide to anchorages and sailing destinations. Each episode is recorded on location and I cover everything I know about the anchorage from my research and experience at the anchorage. I also kept a journal in my logbook and will be posting them as a blog with still photos. I think First Mate may be a bit off these days. We take advantage of easy access to land to get a little work done on some boat projects. We're working hard to teach ourselves all of the trades and skills needed to be a self-reliant cruiser. We have a lot of fun installing new gear that we worked hard to save up for in Colorado, and even the dinghy motor works after being stored for 8+ months! Yay! We sail west, along the northern Moroccan coastline. It’s all go go go right now, just making quick stops in every few ports so that we can make our exit out of the Mediterranean. New oceans are calling our names. We tie off the boat in another marina that’s pretty much deserted and head into the country on a road trip. Chaguaramas ist ja als Drecksloch bekannt. Aber so schlimm hätten wir es nicht erwartet. Unsere Ankunft in Trinidad war mehr als ernüchternd... Widerlich sogar. Wir fanden uns inmitten einer dicken Öl- und Dieselschicht wieder, die auf dem Wasser trieb. Unser Schiff und Dinghy waren schwarz und wir sind schnell wieder abgehauen. Außerdem haben wir Max' ersten Geburtstag gefeiert! Es war zum Totlachen! :D Warum sind wir eigentlich nach Trinidad? Um die 7seas aus dem Wasser zu holen und das nicht mehr vorhandene Antifouling zu ersetzen. Und ein paar mehr Arbeiten zu erledigen. Also raus mit der Guten. Mouillage dans une petite anse super jolie jusqu'au réveillon du nouvel an! Bonjour à tous et bienvenue, nous sommes "Les Cagouilles Du Large". Nous sommes une famille de 4 personnes: Fred; Sandra; Valentin et Maurine. Nous embarquons sur notre voilier, un Sun Fizz de chez Jeanneau nommé "Mister Fizz" en compagnie de Heïdi notre chienne berger blanc suisse, et de Fifi notre chatte. Nous allons vous faire découvrir les lieux où nous débarquerons durant notre voyage autour du monde ainsi que notre mode de vie à bord. Saímos de Cabo Frio, rumo a Buzios... pegamos vento de alheta o tempo todo, foi uma delicia, e o melhor de tudo : Não gastamos 1 REAL ... Ainda em Cabo Frio passeamos pela Ilha do Japonês, bem proximo da nossa ancoragem, fomos de bote ate a Ilha... local tranquilo um paraíso ecológico de águas calmas, rasas e quente. Para finalizar nossa curta temporada em Cabo Frio, assistimos um lindo nascer da Lua Cheia .. melhor que qualquer cinema .. foi maravilhoso !!! Espero que recebam esse energia maravilhosa ..
