Nico Poons’ Charisma proved today that there is a new player in town in the one design fleet, as they clung on to their lead from yesterday to win the RC44 Calero Marinas Cup, the opening event of the 2018 RC44 championship. But it came down to the last run of today’s last race when a final curved ball cut the Monaco-based team’s overall lead to just one point ahead of arch-rival, Team Nika. After their outstanding Saturday, defending 2017 RC44 champions Igor Lah’s Team CEEREF were still in the groove and led today’s opening race from start to finish. After posting a couple of deep results, Vladimir Prosikhin 's Team Nika was back on song for race two. The Russian team and John Bassadone’s Peninsula Petroleum opted early for the right on the first beat where they struck gold. The two boats were respectively first and second at the top mark, positions they maintained until the finish. Staying in one location for a while isn't something that we are great at, although on this occasion we didn't have much choice. To avoid the strong winds and stormy weather across the strait we needed to wait in Picton until we could spot a good enough weather window to head back to Wellington: crossing the Cook Strait and Kaori rip. Our stay in Picton lasted a very fun, but long two weeks. In this space of time we had to take two trips to the sail repair shop, beached our boat and also, ran out of money. Episode 21 The fishing gods are still with us as we hook another couple of Mahi Mahi. At last we manage to fly the gennaker without any issues but I’m not sure if we were doing the right thing or if we just got lucky but I’ll take it none the less. We stop off for a few beers in Porto Banus but anyone who has ever been to Banus knows that never happens so it got quite out of control and I (Dave) end up single handing the following day with a useless crew mate. We were warmly welcomed back into Gib which was so nice as this it where our adventure started (for me anyway). Our friends Alex and Maria (yes, Alex is punching just like me) join us and we get Susan Ann II ready for quite an epic trip to the Canaries. Hurricane Ophelia was raging in the North Atlantic so we delayed our departure and enjoyed Gib some more. This is also why we planned such an offshore route South. It's the first day on the water in our journey to Greenland and Paragon has lost sight of shore. The first night is a bit rough as everyone gets used to being on the water with rolling seas. A North Atlantic cold front, threatening to wreak havoc over Lanzarote, provided Solent-like conditions for the opening race on day three of the RC44 Calero Marinas Cup, the first event of the 2018 RC44 championship. Fortunately, once the front had passed, the wind veered back into the south, the sun came out allowing all the teams to enjoy another memorable afternoon of racing. The RC44 Calero Marinas Cup will take place over 28 February until 4 March and will pit the world's top businessmen and the best sailors in the industry compete in high-performance one-design 44-foot carbon racing yachts. Join us this week while we go about a host of different activities. It starts with us taking a little trip to Panama City Beach for a couple of day of relaxing at the end of Mardi Gras week. While there, Deb and I decided to check out a few marinas in Panama City, Pensacola, and Orange Beach AL. We also got to meet Jay and Nikki from Nauti Ohana, a 41' Formosa they are refitting. We had dinner with them, went back to our hotel and while the kids swam in the pool, we talked story, boats and our sailing plans. We then ran into another couple with a 47' Formosa that have been following our refit online which was pretty cool. We decided to extend our stay another day and when we return we go back to the boat to finish sealing the remaining fixed ports on the boat !! Join us on our journey as we continue to rebuild, refit and prepare our Formosa 51 Sailboat for our continued cruising journey. We have always loved the Formosa, bought one (on a bit of a whim) late in 2014, moved aboard this one right away and started to do our refit while living board.
