Quantum Racing stands on the cusp of their first 52 SUPER SERIES regatta in more than a year after posting a super consistent 1,3 on the penultimate day of the 2018 season opening Šibenik 52 SUPER SERIES Sailing Week. The three-times circuit champions go into the final day with a nine-point lead over second-placed Sled. With their two second places, Takashi Okura’s posse of seasoned Kiwis on Sled matched Quantum Racing’s four points tally for the day to seize second position on the leaderboard from the world champions Platoon who slumped to a weighty 10th place in the second race. We have been anchored at Cambridge Cay in The Bahamas for a couple of days now. Yesterday we explored the island and journeyed over to the Rocky Dundas Caves, which were incredible! We are for sure going back on another day! Check that video out here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2rFLUS8zwQ0&t=336s Today we went in search of a plane wreck near O'Brien's Cay that we found on the charts. We didn't know anything about it or what to expect and hoped it would be worth seeing. At first we were discouraged, because there were already dive groups in the area making it feel a little crowded, and we didn't want to be in the way. Another issue was trying to find a decent spot to drop anchor; There was a current of water flowing making us uncomfortable to leave Turtle for very long. Eventually we found a spot to anchor and were able to take the dinghy to the one and only buoy at the plane wreck, where we tied up to a boat that was already there. The Plane was upside-down in about 15' of water surrounded by coral reefs with lots of fish. Randall had a great time diving down for a closer look and even swam through the plane! Please click on CC (Closed Captions) for commentary... Docking a big boat requires planning. Since you can't change the slip direction, you need to adjust your approach and speed to the direction of the wind and current. Here the skipper makes a wide turn into the fairway. He sees that he'll be docking into the wind and current, which is always preferable. On a big boat like this one, it's a bonus to have several crew aboard. The Skipper takes his time lining up before proceeding slowly into the slip. Crew are spread out along the deck and it appears each has a designated dockline to handle. The skipper gives enough power to maintain way and allows the boat to travel well into the slip before he gives the the order to secure lines. If the wind or current were to his stern, stopping would be a bit more tricky and some reverse throttle would probably be needed. All said, we'll give the skipper an A+ on this landing.

If the largely amateur French team on Paprec finished the third racing day of the Šibenik 52 SUPER SERIES Sailing Week in raptures after a well earned victory, the hard driving Terry Hutchinson, skipper and tactician of Quantum Racing may take some satisfaction that they now top the regatta standings but he mood was more one of frustration to have lost two boats down the final run of the second race. The French proved that their second in the coastal race was no fluke. They lead off the pin end of the line, around the top mark and kept cool and composed to earn their first race win on the world’s leading monohull grand prix circuit in more than a year. Building a cruising sailboat This week's episode looks at the glue I'm using between the plywood planking panels on the hull. I would like to make clear that the tests I perform were carried out entirely to my specifications and were only performed the one time, so do not represent properly conducted scientific testing. Thursday, May 10, and we are off for Virginia. We end up having to tack out of the Old Florida Channel to reach open waters. The winds stubbornly remain east to northeast, pushing us westward until we close the coast around Lake Worth the following morning. Then the winds fall light. We tack back out into the Gulf Stream and mostly drift with the current for the next few days, which is conveniently taking us where we want to go.

In this video we fit 4 x 110 Ah AGM batteries to replace our boat's old house battery bank. We spent very little considering how much money we will save whilst living at anchor... 🔔 SUBSCRIBE ➜ http://bit.ly/SBYouTube⛵ Marine batteries are definitely not created equally. Whilst searching for our batteries we had many things to consider: Dimensions and price being primary considerations. However, some cheap 'Deep Cycle Marine Leisure' batteries have a life expectancy of just 70 recharge cycles! You may be able to get these batteries cheaply, but they are a false economy... Lithium Ion batteries are the top of the range with 2000 + recharge cycles, but with each battery costing a small fortune, these were out of the equation for us. We went for AGM Deep Cycle batteries with an expected lifetime of 600 cycles @ 50% Depth of Discharge. We will have 400 watts of solar panels installed on our boat keeping these batteries charged so we expect them to last us a very long time.
