For additional details pertinent to this video please read the description below. PIVOTING is the third video in our Physics of Docking series. Jeff Merrill and Douglas Cochrane have collaborated to share their combined docking knowledge with other boaters through this series of videos. Filming for these episodes was done in San Diego, CA aboard a single engine Nordhavn 57. There are two commonly used methods to pivot or rotate your single engine trawler, PROP WASH and PROP WALK. These were introduced in the previous episode, THE PROP, and now you can see them in practice in the PIVOTING video. Both actions work best in a “dead slow” or stopped position. By shifting in and out of forward/neutral/reverse you can learn how to control the speed of rotation and keep your circle within a small patch of water. PROP WASH is used to initiate a turn by first moving your helm hard over and then giving a short forward gear blast. The angled rudder deflects propeller turbulence (wash) and pushes your stern to the side which simultaneously starts spinning your bow. PROP WASH can be used to spin your trawler in a tight circle, either clockwise or counterclockwise by pushing the stern - depending upon which way your rudder is turned. Giving a short blast of turbulence in forward gear and then shifting back into neutral initiates the spin. PROP WALK is the “paddle wheeling” effect of your propeller in dead slow. Using your propeller to go backwards is inefficient for propulsion (the pitch is reversed) and the blades “crab” your stern sideways in the direction of the rotation. PROP WALK is only effective at very slow speeds as you must overcome forward inertia as this effect only works in reverse. PIVOTING using short forward gear bursts, countered by a swift shift into neutral, then clicking in reverse is a combination of PROP WASH and PROP WALK commonly referred to when combined as BACK AND FILL. If you favor the forward blasts and hold position with subtle reverse shifts you can use this Forward/Neutral/Reverse technique to turn your trawler in circles. PROP WASH, PROP WALK, and BACK AND FILL are techniques that can give you better control. They are most effective at dead slow when their influence is more significant. You will be a more confident docker once you understand how you to apply these methods to your specific trawler and how it will ultimately behave. In this weeks episode, we change our plans to deal with an unplanned project.   I went to the boat and noticed a system fault 135 error on the Xantrex ProSine 3.0 inverter and charger.  We end up troubleshooting and correcting the issue.  Sadly, like most things, we also uncover another problem, no wait, let's call it an opportunity. We show 3 great sanding hacks for round items.  This was a GREAT find and we were shocked at how well this works for sanding spindles.  I can't believe I didn't think of this sooner, but this saved us hours in sanding and we now have a routine for the next few weeks for sanding and preparing the wooden spindles for varnish on the boat as the projects near completion. I make a trip out of town for work to Pheonix and spend some time with my work team.  It was a great time and we had some fun getting to fly over Lake Ponchartrain on the departure and some competitive local bar outdoor Jenga competitions. We see the non-skid go on the roof while out of town AND some major progress on the stainless steel handrails. The Danish summer is here and it is regularly rain and wind, but this time I apply one coat of antifouling and then the rain begins. The next day it is time to apply the non copper based antifouling to the s-drive and the rudder guide but then I realize there is a problem I need to solve first.

I helped with a two-day yacht delivery down the western edge of Chilean Patagonia -- from Puerto Montt to the town of Castro in the Chiloé Archipelago. The boat is 58 feet. We didn't have a lot of wind as you can see, so we motored most of the time.

We unstep the mast and haul our sailboat out of the water. The standing rigging replacement project will continue with the mast down while the boat is out of the water for the hurricane season. It was may goal to complete the replacement of the standing rigging with the boat in the water. Unfortunately, I reached a point where I was not able to continue the project because the mast could not be effectively secured while upright. Ah... safety first, right? Oh well - the boat is coming out of the water anyways, so it makes sense to go ahead and pull the mast down and finish the rigging project safely. Thanks for watching!!
