After we crossed the Panama Canal, Covid made traveling the world by sailboat much more complicated. This is our story of "escaping covid". With Panama locking down, closing airports, limiting boat movements and refusing to issue exit documents, we decided that we had to get out of dodge. In mid-March 2020, our first two choices (Galapagos and French Polynesia) closed their borders and we decided to take the big leap and embark on an unplanned nearly 5,000 nautical mile passage into the world's biggest ocean. And we caught a huge marlin along the way. _____________________ 0:00 Intro 0:29 Big Provisioning 1:20 Our First and Second Destination closed their borders 3:01 Starting the passage 3:38 Why I decided to leave land 4:42 Trying out our Parasailor spinnaker 6:24 BIG marlin! 8:23 The blood starts flowing 10:22 Failure 11:10 Workout on Tengah 11:38 Another fish! 14:27 First sign of civilization 14:38 Approaching land 15:40 Celebratory Meal
Pirates and kidnapping for ransom have historically been a problem off the coast of Colombia and Panama. In the 12 months prior, our cruising friends were boarded by 6 pirates and tied up and a Kiwi family was boarded and the father killed. Back when I had a job that included Kidnap and Ransom insurance, they warned me that this area was not covered due to extreme risk. Because of all of this, when a group of men in paramilitary uniforms made us follow them, we immediately thought, "Are we getting kidnapped by pirates?" In this episode we were hoping for a smooth crossing from the Eastern Caribbean through Bonaire, Colombia and Panama in an attempt to get to French Polynesia by May. It did not turn out as we expected.
Join us on our first 1000+ mile double handed sail, when we experience our worst passage so far! Since it's a mostly upwind sail, with big swell and multiple weather fronts rolling through, we understand why many circumnavigators say this is probably their roughest passage. Leaving the US East Coast in Fall, we tried to squeeze between early winter storms at the start and get across the gulf stream safely, then avoid late season tropical storms as we got close to the Caribbean. With highly unpredictable weather at the change of seasons, we don't quite nail it. Hope you enjoy! _____________________ 0:00 Intro 0:49 Leaving offshore 2:23 Gulf Stream Crossing 3:03 First Weather Front 5:09 Eerie Second Weather Front 5:44 Caught a fish! 6:10 Surfing UPWIND 6:59 Running from a developing storm 8:54 Arriving St. Martin 10:06 Hurricane Irma damage 11:53 Sailing to St. Barths 13:15 Diving St. Barths
With hurricane season forcing us north of Florida for a few months, Mie has the time to see the "Real America" and finds pleasant and not-so-pleasant surprises along the way. A few highlights and lowlights include: - A red-blooded American military air show - Crew overboard "practice" - A hurricane! - Southern life, complete with crabs and country music - San Francisco, Lake Tahoe and Yosemite - A World Series victory in Washington DC! In this episode, our Volvo Penta engine dies suddenly as we sail in light winds through the Dominican Republic and Bahamas and stop at the creepy scene of a murder suicide. Despite rushing to get out of the hurricane box, we experience a lot in a short period: boat troubles, stunning empty anchorages in national parks, boys competing, dream jobs that end in death, risky sailing, shipwrecks and unexpected romance.
While she can easily be sailed by two, we have had many friends and family join us as crew throughout the world and almost universally, they've made our adventure better. Join us as we experience Antigua Sailing Week (pre-corona), eat donkey burgers on Barbuda and act like a charter boat in the British Virgin Islands. Along for the adventure are Felix from Germany and friends from California, who go from newbie sailors to an offshore passage in a few days. Hope you guys enjoy it and as always, comments and suggestions are welcome. -Scott and Mie
In this video, where we focus on our experiences in the first 4 months of our time in the Caribbean, but somehow include Hawaii and Denmark, we: - Pack 9 people on Tengah for a week. - Take Tengah through a breaking reef pass with and zero under the keel. - Settle down for a bit outside possibly the perfect eco-resort. - Dive into the good and bad of life for the locals on Bequia. - And get Mie, who is afraid of heights, stuck up the mast. We've been quite bad with putting out new videos, but we have more free time nowadays, so promise to be a bit faster. :) Hope you enjoy it!
A Tribute to Snorkeling in the Caribbean! This video is dedicated to Mie's mom. We took her snorkeling for the first time in her life when she visited us Spring 2019 in the Caribbean. But she couldn't really adjust to the snorkel and mask, so she didn't see much of the beauty of what is in the ocean and with this video we would like to show her that. Sadly coral reefs are threatened all over the world and particularly so in the Caribbean. In fact, only about one-sixth of the original coral cover is left in the Caribbean and all coral reefs in the Caribbean may disappear in the next 20 years. So maybe video likes this will be the only way to experience the beauty of coral reefs in the future? ? All footage in this video is shot while snorkeling, hence no SCUBA while making this video. Unfortunately, our underwater camera leaked while we were in the British Virgin Islands, so this video is also a little tribute to our Garmin Virb Ultra 30 camera. We still haven't bought a replacement underwater camera, so if you guys have any suggestions we are all ears! :-) Mie and Scott --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Music in this video: Song: Beautiful Instrumental Music - Dream by Chan Wai Fat https://youtu.be/MpgbEsa4nOk Song: Flames - Dan Henig ( Music For Content Creators ) https://youtu.be/08tj3qlpsqw Song: Scott Holmes - Cath Up Sally Song: Doctor Turtle - Which That is This Song: Finn Anderson - Some Days Song: Low Life High Life - Dan Henig | Royalty Free Music - No Copyright Music https://youtu.be/omgeKEaHnNE Song: Scott Holmes - Happy Go Lucky
HITCHHIKING ON A BOAT- Two weeks on Tengah from a hitchhiker's point of view! How is it to join Tengah without previously knowing us (Scott and Mie)? Well, we met 19 year old Felix from Germany in Martinique, when we were replacing our standing rigging. Felix had hitchhiked all the way from his home in Germany to Gibraltar and across the Atlantic Ocean, and now he was looking for a new boat to join. We have never previously taken hitchhikers on board Tengah, but we have pretty good experience with letting people join our boat, so we decided to invite Felix along. Felix has no phone, no computer and no camera (due to some unfortunate circumstances earlier in his trip), but he is keen on taking pictures and making videos. So we lent him our equipment, and now he made this awesome video about his first two weeks with us (yup, Felix is faster at editing than we are ?). We really like this video and hope you do too ?. Would you bring a hitchhiker on your boat? Or are you considering hitchhiking on a boat yourself? Comments are always welcome ? TENGAH GOES WEST - Crossing the Atlantic Ocean!! Cross The Atlantic Ocean with Tengah in 16 minutes ? This video is for all of you who want to see how it was and how long it took to cross our first ocean on our Amel 54 sailboat with Mie, Scott, Swedish crew members Per and Kajsa and Andrew from San Francisco. It was a different experience than we expected! In this video we also give you 10 facts about the Atlantic Ocean that you may not have known before and in doing so, give you a sneak peak at one of our future videos - a full tour of Tengah. We hope you enjoy it! If so, click like and share it. Doing what you shouldn't do when sailing: Rushing on a Schedule If you become a bit exhausted by watching this video, we don't blame you! The video takes us back to the Fall 2018 in the Mediterranean Sea and a lot of things happen: We do some land based travelling to Bosnia & Herzegovina and learn about the horrors of the Yugoslav Wars and the genocide We play some old-school PinBall with friends from Denmark We charter a racing sailboat and realize how much we appreciate Tengah We sail in a VERY fast pace through the Mediterranean Sea (and end up in 45+ knots of wind) to be able to start our Atlantic Crossing in time. We meet some REAL YouTube Vloggers (Ryan_and_Sophie_Sailing) and go behind the scenes of one of their videos We eat some mealworms and learn about alternative protein production Along the way we of course have a lot of fun, and continue with our (apparently) Swedish theme by giving our own little tribute to the famous ABBA - have we told you that neither of us are Swedish, although we used to live in Sweden? If you are wondering why we don't have more footage from all of this, we can assure you that so do we! Truth is that this was a very stressful period for us, and we simply didn't manage to add shooting videos to all of this. Another thing you might be wondering is; what has eating dried mealworms and learning about alternative protein production to do with sailing and travelling? Well, not really much as you might have figured, but it brings us very close to one of our aims with this trip. We want to learn about environmental or social issues that we meet along the way and examine ways to do something about to minimize negative impacts. This might come in the form of organising beach clean-ups throughout the world, learning about mealworm production or talking to those dedicated to reducing sexual violence in the Caribbean. We are not doing this to confuse you or to tell you how you should live your life, we are simply doing it because we want to learn ourselves. By sharing our videos with you we hope that you find joy in learning with us, and that you after having watched our videos have learned a new thing or two. We hope you enjoy this way of making sailing/traveling videos, because this is something that is very important to us. Enjoy and all the best from Mie & Scott PS: if you want to know more about the benefit about mealworm production go to:https://www.independent.co.uk/life-style/food-and-drink/mealworms-food-why-eat-beetle-larvae-insect-taste-ingredient-supply-a7870541.html or if you want to know more about the farm Soeren is part-owner at: http://heimdalentofarm.dk/ (Danish Homepage) Also, don't forget to visit our homepage at www.svtengah.com Camera Equipment Sony A7S with Sony 28mm f2.0 lens Garmin VIRB Ultra 30 action camera Zhiyun Crane Gimbal (Version 1) Canon EOS 70D with 18-135mm f3.5-5.6 lens Microphone: Shure LensHopper VP83 Editing: Final Cut Pro X We have decent enough equipment, but obviously not the latest and greatest. Sailing/Partying in Montenegro and Croatia with friends as Crew Ep. 4 It's summertime in the Adriatic Sea and we are enjoying some beautiful sailing in Montenegro and Croatia with our friends as crew on Tengah. We may party more than we sail in this video, where we are caught in somewhat compromising positions :-), but we also explain what is special about cruising in Montenegro and Croatia and why not many cruisers go there despite the beautiful surroundings. Watch this video if you are interested in knowing more about cruising in Montenegro and Croatia and if you want to judge for yourself if Scott is speaking the truth when he proclaims that he is not drunk at Hula Hula Bar? We mention it in the video, but we saw how many plastic straws we used at Hula Hula Bar and after that, we talked to them about non-plastic straw alternatives which they agreed to take into use in the 2019 season. Hopefully, we made the smallest bit of difference. So if you are going to Hula Hula Bar this summer, please watch out for their non-plastic long straws! Will be awesomeee!!! Crew appearing in this video: Majk - Scott's friend from Lund, Sweden Pauline - Majk's girlfriend from Lund, Sweden Francisco - Scott's friend from San Francisco Cristina - Mie's friend from Stockholm, Sweden Maria - Cristina's friend from Stockholm, Sweden Per - Scott's friend from Gothenburg, Sweden Andreas - Per's friend from Stockholm, Sweden You can always read more about the people who have crewed with us on our homepage, and yes if you want to apply for crewing with us (but maybe not after having watched this video?.? :-)) we also have a crew questionnaire here: http://svtengah.com/tengah-community/sv-tengah-crew/ To give you an idea how far behind we are with our video editing, we are currently in the Caribbean (St. Vincent and The Grenadines), but this video takes us back to July last year. We promise to be faster for the next videos :-). Snorkeling into a sea of plastic - and doing something about it! To manage expectations, we better reveal that there is not much sailing going on in this video, where we find what is at times described as 'The Best Beach' in Croatia (Sunj Beach on Lopud Island) The beach is popular among charter boats and tourists from Dubrovnik, but something is lurking below the surface - PLASTIC! We decide to go snorkeling to see how much plastic we can pick up in 30 minutes. SPOILER ALERT: A lot! Watch this short video if you want to see how much plastic we can pick up from the buttom of the ocean in 30 minutes and if you want to see Scott replicate the famous 'Just Say NO' campaign against drugs in the US ? The start of it all! After buying her near Gibraltar, we spend 8 weeks near Gibraltar working on our Amel 54 to prepare her for a round the world sailing trip.
