s/v Cloudy Bay (Hallberg-Rassy 54) spent a couple of days in Barbuda, having a wonderful sail from Antigua and then back. Although signs of hurricane Irma's destruction are very much in evidence (8 months after, the town is still not rebuilt and only few inhabitants returned from Antigua) we have found breathtaking beaches with white soft sand, and fell in love with the island. Some stretches of beach even have a pink hint. Well worth to visit. 23-27 May 2018

It is almost the 4th of July! In Sarasota , FL That means the offshore powerboat races are in town. The super fast powerboats race along the coast of Lido Beach. That happens to be just south of Longboat Key where our sailboat is right now. We made a day of it and went to see the boat races and even got to visit the wet pits where the boats are prepped and launch by crane into the water. Sail with us from Palmas Del Mar to the lovely quiet island of Culebra, Puerto Rico in the Spanish Virgin Islands. Discover a new fish (to us) that Simon reels in (no - it wasn't the usual Tuna or Mahi Mahi). Listen to Simon discuss our passage plan using our Navionics app on the Ipad and then outline his thought process about getting out of the marina slip safely. The video will give you an insight as to what it's like fishing, filleting, and eat a fish right out of the sea. The whole process may not be as easy as one would think! And if you don't want to see a fish filleted, you might have to close your eyes. You'll also gain an insight into Simon's thought process regarding the passage plan and leaving the marina. Quite a bit of thought needs to be used to ensure a boat leaves a marina without hitting something ;) We also sail over some unexploded bombs. Sailing Kawau Island Kawau Island to Great Barrier Island In this episode ,we sail eastwards from Kawau Island to Great Barrier Island. We have a very relaxed crossing complete with an awesome dolphin escort. Another new island for us. Great Barrier Island is a days sail east of Kawau island. It offers many sheltered anchorages and lovely walks. In this video we finally set sail again! So nice to be back on the ocean, it makes all the effort, hard work and frustration worthwhile. The new boat exceeds expectations during the first night when winds reach over 40 knots and we cross the wide bay bar early the next morning with problems. The next few days are spent heading north in mellow but cold conditions. The low winds also give me the chance to fly my asymmetric spinnaker, a sailing first for me. We have 2 inflatable boards from Swiss company Indiana and take the chance to go paddling up a fresh water creek. All in all a great start to the trip. It all starts with an Instagram comment we received right before we started sailing towards Kiel, that said “oh, you’ll arrive in Kiel right in time for the Kieler Woche”. We did not know what the Kiel week was, and we were too busy preparing the sail down to the Kiel Fjord to check it out. On the morning of Saturday the 16th of June, we approached Kiel and noticed hundreds of sailboats and tall ship at the entry of the Fjord, and started to suspect that we had underestimated the Kiel week. A google search revealed that the Kieler Woche is a HUGE maritime festival that welcomes 3 MILLION visitors each year, and we were sailing right into that. We had totally missed that “detail”. Do you think we called to check about marina spots? Of course not! And that made us a little nervous about our ability to find a spot. Oh, and it started raining like crazy. At the most southern point we ever reached on Polar Seal, we were getting showered. We got lucky and found a spot. Now that we were in Kiel, and there was a big party going on…. We needed to go check it out! We were joined by Dyke, an old college friend of Ryan from Germany, who guided us around the festival. Or? We essentially went from food stand to bars and more food stands, walking out the enormous amount of calories we were ingesting. Ryan and I bought each other some “lebenkuchen”, those heart shaped cookies you wear as a necklace. I bought Ryan a “Princess” one and he bought me a “pirate” one. We found the party square, that had great music (at least, what I deem is great music), and I had a little party for myself. At the end of the day, Ryan tried to eat his lebenkuche cookie, which turned out…. Isn’t that good.
