Seal Beach Yacht Club Sunday Sailors - 2018 - Race 2 November 18, 2018

The design of the hull lines of J8 was originally from the legendary boards of Frank C. Paine. Paine is famous for his 1930 J-class yacht Yankee that was modified and updated in 1934 and the only J that could compete against the considerably longer waterline Super Js'. The lines plan shows that Paine designed J8 with an 88 ft original waterline length, a foot longer than any other J ever designed. He intended to accept a penalty on sail area for waterline length, which was quite radical in those days. This spectacular Pilot Classic ketch, with a length over deck of 46 metres, is one of two superyachts based on our designs that is built at Royal Huisman. Almost half a year of research went into the project, including extensive Computational Fluid Dynamics studies on various hull shapes. The design was ultimately put to the test at the MARIN tank testing laboratories in the Netherlands using a six-metre scale model. Wind tunnel tests were carried out at the Wolfson Unit in the UK, where various sail configurations were also tried. Last but not least, the structure of the yacht was modelled in 3D and analysed for stiffness and rigidity with Finite Element Modelling techniques. Epic highlights of the 2018 RORC Season's Points Championship. Winning the Jazz Trophy for first overall in IRC was the Army Sailing Association's X-41 British Soldier, the first Armed Services team to win the championship since it was established in 1999. British Soldier took part in 11 races, winning the championship in the very last race, with crew members ranging from Private soldiers, through Sergeants, right up to Colonel. Five different skippers were in charge during the campaign: Andrew Britton, Will Naylor, Phil Caswell, Paul Macro and Donall Ryan. The 2018 RORC Yacht of the Year, winning the Somerset Memorial Trophy was Matt Allen's Ichi Ban. Matt's Australian team won the Brisbane to Gladstone Race, the Rolex Sydney Hobart, and the Sydney Gold Coast Race. Ichi Ban's series of results, in the three major Ocean races in Australia, has never been matched. We finally untie the lines and leave our safe marina berth in Turkey for unknown anchorages in the Greek Islands. Due to delays checking out in Turkey we get to sail in the night when the winds and waves increase and we must anchor in the dark. In this episode we finish our passage from tangier to madeira and enjoy our awesome anchorage on the island Porto Santo before setting sail again for the island of flowers — Madeira! The sailing was excellent, often enjoying 10 knots on a beam reach under a full main and the Code Zero with only 15 knots of true wind. We averaged just over 7 knots for the passage. After close to 700nm of sailing, we caught our first sight of the rugged east end of Ilya de Porto Santo and then anchored off the beach outside the marina in about 24 ft of water alongside three other yachts. After a long passage, nothing beats the peacefulness of a quiet anchorage and a nice swim off the stern of the boat. We spent most of our time ashore exploring the quaint and friendly small island. The marina is full of adventurous sailors. Sitting at the marina cafe we heard German, Spanish, Portuguese and many other languages. Thank you for your time and support. Especially when land fall involves transiting a cut on a leeward shore complicated by tricky tides. And if there's one thing that we’ve learned in our time sailing the Bahamas, is that a weather forecast older than 12 hours might as well be from last week. Our biggest concern is finding an anchorage that has complete protection from all sides, because our most recent weather forecast dowloaded this morning on our Inreach Satellite communicator, shows the wind completely boxing the compass within the next 24 hours as well as increasing speed to over 30 knots. We were so relieved to look at the charts and see the dream anchorage inside of Royal Island just a few miles away. That night we experienced the most intense thunder and lightning storm we have ever been in! We have never seen anything like it in our entire lives. The wind indeed boxed the compass as forecasted and there is no way we would have been as safe at any other anchorage in the area. We were so glad that we installed the lightning rod to the top of our mast and grounded everything on the boat to the lightning ground dissipating plate on the bottom of the boat. We leave early in the morning and sail through the Strait of Bonifacio. A short detour into the beautiful natural harbour and a city tour follow before we set off for the Balearic Islands. However, mooring in the harbour proves to be complicated. Afterwards we need a refreshment before we go to explore the medieval city. After a strict but beautiful city stroll we start our night sail to the Balearic Islands, still unclear which island we will reach first... and have a nearly collision with a container ship!
