From the moment Glenn Ashby won his first A-Class Cat World Title in Spain at age 18, he demonstrated an innate ability to understand the physics in play on the water and interpret them better than anyone else in his chosen class. As the winning 2017 Americas Cup skipper and wing trimmer for Emirates Team New Zealand and now Cup Defender for the next edition on Auckland Harbour, Glenn shares insights on the design evolution to the new 75-foot foiling monohull and how the return to some of the traditional elements of Americas Cup match racing such as; upwind starts, larger sailing teams and tacking duels have driven the monohull design and created this hybrid of both ‘tradition’ and ‘futuristic’ design that even a ‘catamaran purist’ could love. Glenn gets technical on the physics that drive the performance of this exciting new monohull and candidly shares his thoughts on potential speeds, likelihood of capsizes, the potential for 100% fly time and the changes to crew selection strategy with the new design. Episode 42. Happy Easter everyone. We've been a great time lately but Hayley has done her best to get a video up for the Easter weekend. This episode sees us tackle our first reef as we make our way north and into the shallower waters. They are very scary the first few times to make an entry into an island and should never been taken for granted! Turks and Caicos is a playground for the rich and famous with some very high end resorts on the island... and a great Indian restaurant! We would have loved to spend more time here but with deadlines approaching we really want to head north and explore the Bahamas before I have to go to work. It's an easy 36 hour sail from T&C to the Bahamas (once past the reef) but you need to find somewhere to clear customs which for us would be George Town so a cheeky few nights at one of the islands on the way was what we decided on and Conception Island was our choice as it's totally uninhabited so we couldn't get in trouble. So we begin our trek back to the northeast with an overnight run to Biscayne Bay from Marathon. Our promised southerly winds don't show up until late into the night, but we reach Fowey Rocks by daybreak and sail into the sheltered bay waters through the Old Florida Channel. After that I look for southerly winds to blow me into the anchorage behind Miami Beach. I get southwesterlies, which is still OK but they quickly veer WNW, which is not. I have quite a close call trying to get through the first bridge. In the lee of the city, I use the dinghy as a push boat to get through the remaining two bridges. Sail faster by installing a new prop, Yep, thats the plan! https://www.sailingnandji.com In this episode of Sailing Nandji, we install our NEW Autoprop onto Nandji. We are very excited about this upgrade to our sailboat. In our eyes, this is the second most important upgrade we have made to Nandji behind the new engine. The Autoprop from Bruntons is specifically designed for cruisers at it can give an extra knot of speed under sail! That is a massive difference for us slower boats! To install the Autoprop onto Nandji, we have to make a few modifications to the sweep area of the prop. As the new Autoprop has a little larger blades than our previous fixed bladed prop, it also is a feathering prop requiring a larger sweep area as the blades rotate 180 degrees giving the vessel the same power going astern as forwards propulsion. When under sail, the self pitching blades pitch to a degree where up to 85% of drag is reduced allowing the boat a much higher speed under sail! Stop it you say, well I agree my friend... Hello Friends, We have another small series of Projects for y'all. This time we are designing and building out the new Navigation Station on SV Triteia. As I mention in the video this project took me FOREVER to complete. I ended up making 3 different complete switch panel / housings before I finally made one I was really happy with. The main factor in the whole process was that I was also designing and building out my Chart Table ( https://youtu.be/mAUi2lt6kqA )at the same time and the final Chart Table design directly affected what was possible with the switch panels. Also early on I tried to make the Chart Table top and panel faces out of a variety of different wood/surface treatments; Stained Marine Ply, Hardboard, Europly before I ended up just making everything out of high quality Baltic Birch and laminating it with white durable formica. This video is a little spotty in the fact that while I was finalizing the switch panels I was going full throttle on my Stove Enclosure build out ( https://youtu.be/Bw_tRFfVJ30 ) and I was so frustrated with the switch panels and focused on building and filming the Stove Enclosure that I didn't video all aspects of Nav Station construction. I did however film a TON of footage of the actually installation of the panels and all of their instruments on the boat. So this first video is just a collection of some of the footage of the lay out design and cutting out the aft panel and trimming the formica. Another great day on the water at the 2019 Toyota New Zealand Optimist National Championships hosted by Murrays Bay Sailing Club! 2007 Optimist World Champion Chris Steele offered up some wise advice to the sailors. The time has come to leave Greece and we set sail before dawn from Kassiopi, Corfu. Hugging the Albanian Coast, Jase soon hooks a fish and tests out the improvements he made to his rigging. Pretty much our whole first day and night we are surrounded by storms. As we sail through minefields off the Albanian coast a large storm front encloses and we decide the only choice is to motor through it. Storms continue all around us as we sail through the night. The following day brings a lot to be excited about. As we sail up past Montenegro the sun comes out and so too do about 30 dolphins. We are so stoked with that experience but then out of no where some much larger creatures approach the boat and we are lucky to experience an unusual animal encounter - Rissos Dolphins! As the sun sets the wind drops and we are forced to motor through the night to Croatia. Jase gives a safety briefing, talking through the steps we are taking to stay safe during an overnight passage. It's a beautiful night with the moon and stars shining. Early in the morning and still in darkness we approach Dubrovnik, Croatia. We check-in to Croatia with ease, pay the fees and are on our way to sailing this stunning country. About us: Our names are Jason and Tracey and we traded our house, cars, business, job and security for freedom, adventure, travel and living simply amongst nature and the seas on our 45 foot Hanse 445 sailing boat, Kawai. We don't know exactly where the winds will take us at this stage but over the next year we hope to sail to Turkey, Greece, Montenegro, Croatia, Italy, Spain, Morocco, Gibraltar, Canary Islands and then across the Atlantic Ocean. Finalmente nos sumergimos en sus cristalinas aguas, los peces no tienen miedo y nis sentimos como si estuvieramos nadando en un gran aquario. ------------------------------------------------------------ Arribem a cabrera, una Reserva Natural ben conservada i on podem sentir la natura amb tota el seu esplendor. Farem una bonica excursió al Far de n'Ensiola al sud de l'illa. Ens trobarem amb les simpàtiques Sargantanes Balears, encara que també comprovarem que a la Noemi no li agraden gaire. Finalment ens submergim en les seves aigües cristal·lines , els peixos no tenen por i ems sentim com si estiguéssim nedant en un gran aquari.
