From a long day that finally yielded just one race, Quantum Racing emerged with an increased lead at the top of the leaderboard of the Menorca 52 SUPER SERIES Sailing Week. The 2018 defending circuit champions, who won the 2016 TP52 World Championship title on these same Balearic waters, profited on the second upwind to pass early leaders, Harm Müller-Spreer’s Platoon, and so scored their second race win in a row. While the new line up on Quantum Racing are gelling nicely and have sailed a strong 2,1,1 from the last three races of the regatta, their perennial rivals Azzurra – who lead after the first day – had another disappointing day. They fouled Alegre and had to take a penalty, which dropped them to 11th. A recovery to seventh only partially helps morale, but the Azzurra – who won here last time the circuit visited in 2017 – need to get back to regular top results. The winds took a long time to fill out on to the race arena. Race officer Maria Torrijo chose to hold the fleet ashore until mid afternoon. But it was only on the fourth attempt – after two general recalls and an AP’d start – that the race finally got away in eight to 10kts of breeze and flat water. Platoon started off the pin end of the line and had Quantum Racing in their pockets off the line. The German team, training and race partners to Quantum – with whom they share data, briefings and debriefs – led around the course until the second beat. They moved left and let Quantum and Provezza profit. Through the finish, Quantum scored the victory with Platoon second and Ergin Imre’s Provezza third. The Turkish-flagged team now lie second going into the final day, three points behind Doug DeVos’s crew, which has Ed Baird on the helm through this season. Azzurra dropped to fourth overall. Located at The Boat Works, in the Marine Precinct of the Gold Coast, the Galeon 460 Fly, Galeon 510 Skydeck, and the Ocean Alexander 88 Sky were officially launched over a spectacular event that included a fake high jacking of Gold Coast City Mayor Tom Tate, a rescue by Russel Ingall, former Bathurst V8 Supercar champion aka James Bond, in an Aston Martin, after Showtime FMX motorbike riders jumped over the Galeon 460 Fly and finished with fireworks. A stellar line up of Aston Martin and McLaren vehicles, Calleija Jewellery, complimented by copious amounts of Moet Ice and tunes from Why Elle Duo - the night was a memorable one for our guests.

On the one hand, it was a miserable day of intermittent rain, chilly wind and an overcast sky like a scene from the North Sea in February. On the other, despite the fickle conditions, the squalls, the holes in the wind, maestro Principal Race Officer Stuart Childerley defied the forecast - just as he did yesterday - and succeeded in holding the full schedule of five races, in a variety of wind conditions enabling much good foiling. It also caused considerable re-arrangement of the leaderboard.

HITCHHIKING ON A BOAT- Two weeks on Tengah from a hitchhiker’s point of view! How is it to join Tengah without previously knowing us (Scott and Mie)? Well, we met 19 year old Felix from Germany in Martinique, when we were replacing our standing rigging. Felix had hitchhiked all the way from his home in Germany to Gibraltar and across the Atlantic Ocean, and now he was looking for a new boat to join. We have never previously taken hitchhikers on board Tengah, but we have pretty good experience with letting people join our boat, so we decided to invite Felix along. Felix has no phone, no computer and no camera (due to some unfortunate circumstances earlier in his trip), but he is keen on taking pictures and making videos. So we lent him our equipment, and now he made this awesome video about his first two weeks with us (yup, Felix is faster at editing than we are 🙈). We really like this video and hope you do too 🤗. LE CAPITAINE: Ah, il faut retenir la manivelle alors ! L'EQUIPIER: Oui, il faut que tu maintiennes Ewincher immobile pour utiliser le mode électrique. Quand tu utilises une manivelle manuelle, tu peux remarquer qu’il y a une position avec laquelle tu as beaucoup de force. Par contre quand tu winches dans la zone rouge, ça peut vite devenir difficile et fatigant. Avec Ewincher, tu restes dans la zone verte, celle dans laquelle tu as le plus de force... le moteur fait le reste ! C’est pour ça qu’Ewincher a la forme d’une manivelle. En terme d’ergonomie, tu trouveras pas mieux ! LE CAPITAINE: Ah une manivelle comme ça, j’en avais déjà une tu sais. L'EQUIPIER: Mais non, c’est pas pareil ! L'EQUIPIER: Elles n’ont pas le même design. Laisse-moi t’expliquer pourquoi ce que ça change: Quelle que soit la manivelle électrique de winch, tu dois toujours compenser l’effort. This week the girls take over the filming for video content. Buckle up, folks. This video is all about life aboard a boat through the eyes of our daughter. :) The girls make strawberry jelly with a pressure cooker (Instant Pot/Instapot), and you can see 'most' of the steps required to do so. Chazzy (13-year-old) makes sugar cookies on board the boat and gets caught eating more of the raw dough when grandma had already said to stop. We have an unbelievably candid discussion about energy drinks, drugs, coffee, and additions. The safe and wise Chazzy gives her point of view, and sometimes the younger family members make the most sense. I continue my time in New Jersey taking care of my dad for a much more extended period than initially planned. I introduce you to CoCo the canine that has trained my dad so well over the years. I also head over to the seashore and see the surfers out, enjoying the higher winds and breaking waves. I hope you enjoy this hodgepodge video focused on a host of different topics all through the lens of Whitney, which I tend to find very funny. Team Racing has the Hinman Trophy, match racing has the Prince of Whales, but now, the Annapolis Yacht Club is pioneering a new event to combine multiple team events. They are calling it the “3-2-1 Challenge”. A provided fleet of local J22s and J30s provide a platform for invited clubs, academic institutions and associations to compete in teams of 6 people. A rotation sheet mixes each discipline as a squad of race committee members, umpires, change boats and a boatswain manage two courses. On the team racecourse, the 6 team members sail J22s double-handed, 3 on 3 with no kites. The next flight entertains the team of 6 sailing J22s triple handed, 2 on 2 with spinnakers. On the adjacent racecourse, a second race committee runs short windward leeward courses with a gate for the Match racing discipline where all 6 team members take on boat handling and maneuvers as one.

On an uncompromising, very much one-sided race course off Mahón, Quantum Racing proved the top scoring boat at the Menorca 52 SUPER SERIES Sailing Week to take the overall lead at the first circuit regatta of 2019 by one single point. After missing Day 2’s scheduled races due to the lack of breeze, the third day was a gift with the bright spring sunshine and 10-15 knots of wind. But with the race area located to the east of the entrance to Mahón’s expansive natural harbour – one of the world’s biggest – the topography upwind created a natural deflection, creating a one-sided course that placed a gilt-edged premium on starting perfectly and getting to the right as smartly as possible. Regatta leaders Azzurra had made a dream start to their season. A second and a win on the first day was swiftly followed by another victory in the first of today’s three races. A textbook start on the signal boat end of the line, a quick tack to the right and the team from the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda led all the way around the course, extending their lead to eight points at the top of the 11-boat fleet. But, as is nearly always the case, when there is such pressure on one side of the course and off the line, it is close to impossible to repeat the same plan time and again. Azzurra were held up by Sled at the start of the next race and their strategy was compromised. Provezza got away to lead while Azzurra rounded fifth dropping places on each subsequent leg to finish seventh. A mainsheet winch problem just before the start of Race 5, the third contest of the day, left Azzurra flat footed and nearly last off the line. The dream, 2,1,1, was rudely awoken to a harsh 17pts reality, just as perennial rivals Quantum Racing hit their straps for a glamour 4,2,1 today. It is a rainy day and it seem like there is a leak in the aft cabin, I trace the leak to the steering pedestal and try to find where the water is entering, but as always a bit tricky. In this video I use the napkin trick to trace down the leak.

Black Point has quickly become one of our favorite stops in the Exumas so we’re happy to spend an extra few days here while we wait for Lorraine’s mom to return to the island to get our hands on some of her famous bread. We venture to the neighboring island of Bitter Guana to meet the prehistoric iguanas that live here (it’s a protected habitat for them so visitors are encouraged not to touch or harass them). It’s really cool to see them up close, living their best lives on the beautiful beaches of this island. They aren’t as gross or aggressive as the famous swimming pigs, so if you have the chance to go say hi to these guys, we definitely recommend it! Before we head to our next destination, we’ve got to take care of the not-so-fun chores that come with living aboard a sailboat.
