In March 1981, the freighter Star Philippine ran aground in the narrows. Ripple Rock was a submerged mount that lay just nine feet beneath the surface of Seymour Narrows. It was a serious hazard to shipping, sinking 119 vessels and taking 114 lives. I have 40 meters between my Vera controller and the nearest z-wave receiver in the garage. Range extenders have not worked well. The solution became an extra antenna on my Vera Edge. It's Prime Time! We've finally reached a point where we can start hitting sections with primer and paint. We've sanded about 1/2 of the boat and are ready to bring on the brushes! The quart can of Interlux 1026 sealer primer only went far enough to do the center section of the center hull and a small portion of the front section of the port side. We've purchased a couple more quarts and will continue on. Our neighbor did mention laying fiberglass down.....so we'll see what we come up with next. (We will be posting the next part in the "Galley / ICE BOX" Saga next Friday) On this weeks episode we prepare the boat for a dive trip to Emerald Bay on Catalina Island. Camille takes inventory of our provisions while I work on putting the Galley back together for the trip. We also test drive our new very small dinghy and enjoyed rowing around the marina. Later than evening,,, after a few two many "beers on a boat" Camille lost her favorite sandal under the boat. I offered to get it for her but she insisted she would do it so I filmed and laughed. The next day we had a very speedy passage to the island due to our freshly scrapped bottom and no swell and enjoyed a quiet day in the sunshine. In this episode we set our way further to the west. We take a quick stop in Ogden and then go to Salt lake city, It is big and the lake is beautiful. After a hot day we drive through the salt flats which is spectacular. It is another miracle of nature. Finally we stop by the Bonneville speedway that is so long that you can not see the end. It was a fantastic experience, the weather was hot but that didn’t bother us. We met in the summer 2015, we were introduced to each other by the virtual world. Eighteen months later we were getting married on a beautiful beach on Barbados, bare foot, very simple ceremony just like a dream! Two days after the wedding laying on the beach, talking about sailing, Carla suggested... why don't we sail around the world? Guess what Simon said? "Let's do it" He took it with no second thoughts! And here we are, two years after that day in Barbados, we started our adventure in Croatia. We made it happen working through all the challenges on the way. Now we are enjoying this wonderful life, and what a wonderful life it is! As we travel we will cross less fortunate countries, we would love to help to build a school or a health care centre, anything that these people may need, and in our beautiful world this is taken for granted. There are two ways to Gybe an Asymmetrical Spinnaker (A-Sail), you can Gybe it on the outside or the inside of the sail. This video reviews the factors you should consider before selecting the one best suited for your boat and the conditions, it then takes you through the steps to ensure you complete the perfect A-Sail gybe. Knowing when to complete an outside A-Sail Gybe is critical, if you try an inside A-Sail gybe when outside is better suited you will end up with a wrapped spinnaker which is hard to untangle and very slow while racing. Once you know when to complete an Outside A-Sail gybe there a 3 key step which must be coordinated to complete the perfect Gybe. The skipper, mainsheet and spinnaker trimmers must work in unison to ensure the main is trimmed in while the boat completes its turn. This allows the A-Sail trimmer to ease the sheet which lets the spinnaker get in front of the boat allowing for a tangle free gybe that quick gets the spinnaker setting on the new Gybe. Understanding the key step and their dependancies allows you you complete the perfect Outside A-Sail Gybe every time and in all conditions.
