We're painting barrier coat on the bottom of our sailboat this week until we run into road bumps in our bottom paint plan. First one of our cans of paint gummed up when we mixed it and then Todd decided we needed to remove more thru hulls from the bottom of our hull. So we're grinding bigger holes in our hull and getting covered in fiberglass again. We are a family preparing to sail around the world in our electric sailboat. After leaving the Coral Bay Marina, we settle in on a mooring in the Little Basin of Islamorada. We all adjust to our newest version of liveaboard life. Hi everyone. In this episode we take our last sail before the lockdown, moving our Snapdragon 24ft Sailing Yacht back to her mooring. We take a walk on our local beaches in search of the native wildlife of North Wales. And we interview the whole family from the amazing sailing channel Mothership Adrift. We are Andy, Melissa and Jack, a sailing family based in North Wales, looking for a bluewater sailing yacht to take us around the world. We currently have a very small 24ft Snapdragon Sailing yacht based in Caernarfon but there are bigger boats on the horizon. In this episode we move Aeolus, with her newly rebuilt gearbox, back from Felinheli Marina to her normal mooring in Caernarfon in the river Seiont under the walls of Caernarfon Castle. There was virtually no wind so we had to motor sail the whole way which was a bit noisy but it was so peaceful and calm we couldn't help enjoy ourselves. Then it was a case of finding ways , like everyone else, to manage the coronavirus lockdown. Fortunately where we live we can literally walk down to the beach and explore the rock pools and look at the wildlife. We also managed to have a Skype chat with the whole family form Mothership Adrift. They've been living aboard for a good while now so it was great for Jack to be able to ask them questions about what it's like being a kid and living on a boat full time in preparation for when we set sail. Our Leopard48 has comfortable staterooms, however since we will eventually be sleeping here every night, we decided to expand our master stateroom bed to a REAL King size instead of the Queen size it was. We eliminated the V berth at the foot of the bed and now it is super comfortable! We bought a new "Ultimate" mattress and sheets from Custom Comfort Bedding out of Fort Lauderdale. If you decide to do the same, note that there is a conduit pipe on the inside hull that must be built around. As an added bonus, we now have a super deep storage addition under the bed deck (kind of hidden). We also decided to recover our salon cushions so we don't have to sit on that sticky, cold, hot, sticky vinyl. A little sunbrella and we are now much cozier. Our sailboat was the production catamaran of her day. Now we're boarding the Leopard 45 which is the modern-day “floating apartment” version. The question that begs to be answered…can it sail and is it a better boat? But, opinions are like birthdays; everyone has one and thinks theirs is important. When it comes to catamarans, many a sailor will scoff at the major production boats and label them as floating apartments or condomarans.  “Big, boxy things not meant for sailing.” I’ll admit that I have thought the same when looking out at raised flybridges with hulls twice the width of ours. But, once upon a time, our sailboat CURIOSITY was the “floating apartment” of her day.  Designed for comfort and space but with decent performance. Now, here we are, boarding the Leopard 45 which is the modern-day “floating apartment” version of our CURIOSITY.  It's way bigger and there have been more than a few design changes over the past fifteen years.  So the question that begs to be answered…can it sail and is it a better boat? WHO ARE WE? We’re Jason and Nikki Wynn. We been living off the grid and exploring the world for almost a decade. Our first six years of travel were an epic road trip around North America. Now we’re on a sailing voyage about the world. Did we have any previous sailing experience, of course not! Neither of us is overly talented, smart, rich, lucky, or retired. Tout autour de lui, sur le pont, les milliers de cristaux de sel qui se sont désunis du géant Indien scintillent. La nappe fluide qui nous supporte se débat toujours pour retrouver un pouls régulier mais les battements sont encore tachycardiques, les dommages sur sa psyché sont palpables autant que notre bouleversement intérieur ! J’adoucie mes pensées dans l’écriture et regarde Cyril se réveiller d’un profond sommeil. Il est vanné, l’épuisement est autant physique que moral. Sans rien nous dire, nous savons… Ce que nous venons de vivre est si violent ! Notre émotivité est touchée au creux de nos être. Un mot, un geste, un regard et l’affliction de notre tourment inonde tout notre corps, un soupir électrique envahi toutes nos veines et dans nos yeux rougis, brille notre soulagement … Nous sommes le 14 avril, dire que nous sommes à moins d’une heure trente en voiture de Madagascar ! C’est tellement frustrant ! Mais nous arrivons bientôt au but. Mayotte n’est plus qu’à 200 milles, nous y serons après-demain. C’est quoi deux jours sur une vie ! Nous venons de franchir la frontière maritime qui sépare les Seychelles de la France ! Au moins ici, nous ne devrions pas être rejetés comme des damnés. La folie de l’Homme a fini par le cloîtrer chez lui ! Renfermé sur lui-même, il en est arrivé à s’enfermer pour de bon ! Obligation ou nécessité ? Faut-il en arriver là pour que les choses changent ? Pour que l’humanité ne soit pas vouée à sa perte ? Pour que l’individu ne soit plus égoïste et qu’il prenne conscience de sa chance de vivre sur cette belle planète ? Dans quarante-huit heures, nous serons confrontés à une autre sorte de tempête, un déchainement créé par l’Homme lui-même, un tourbillon qui nous dépasse. Nous nous y approchons entre 6 et 7 nœuds sous 25 nœuds de vent, le même vent qui, hier, s’époumonait à nous faire comprendre que nous n’étions pas à notre place. Il y a que comme ça que la nature peut se protéger ! Elle le sait bien, l’Homme ne va pas l’envahir de cette façon. Ici pas de plateformes pétrolières, pas de pêcheurs, pas de pipelines… L’air est sain et l’eau est pure… La journée s’étire, l’océan se tranquillise, le ciel se dégage et comme pour sacraliser ce passage, le soleil nous fait grâce de son coucher. Les yeux plein de larmes nous contemplons cette libération…

Learning how to tie the Stevedore Stopper knot is well worth the effort. Here at bottom up boats we think it is the ultimate stopper knot. It is relatively easy to tie, has a decent sized stopper, is secure under low load and easy to untie after load has been applied due to the way the knot is finished. These three key features of the stevedore stopper knot ensure that you will never loose a line through a pulley or cleat while knowing you will not need a knife to undo the knot after it has been loaded up. The Stevedore knot is used a lot less than a figure 8 or an overhand knot, we find this hard to comprehend as it is just as easy to tie with many benefits. That is why we encourage ever sailor to add this to hit list of most used knots. The 2001-02 race was the first to be run as The Volvo Ocean Race 🚘🇸🇪, with the Swedish company taking ownership of the event for a tenure that would extend through the 2017-18 edition. It would also be the last race to start in the UK. Eight highly prepared and professional teams took the start in Southampton, and there was drama nearly immediately, with the highly touted Assa Abloy team changing skippers in Cape Town after a disappointing fifth place result on the first leg. Neal MacDonald would take over for Roy Heiner. American John Kostecki led the Illbruck Challenge to victory with Assa Abloy making a late charge. Grant Dalton was at the head of the two-boat effort of Amer Sports, and his team rounded out the podium, an impressive result given the late start to the campaign. Wenn man das dann schafft ist man plötzlich in einer wunderschönen neuen Welt die weder gefährlich noch angsteinflößend ist. Es wird ruhig und entspannend.
