The 2011-12 Volvo Ocean Race is remembered for brutal conditions which dismasted or otherwise damaged large portions of the six boat fleet from the start, with half the boats retiring on Leg 1 from Alicante to Cape Town. 🇪🇸👉🇿🇦 Franck Cammas and Groupama would go on to win the race, making Cammas only the second French skipper to take victory in the race’s history after Lionel Péan in 1985-86.🇫🇷🥇 Groupama did it the hard way though after Spanish boat Telefónica had dominated the first few legs. Groupama then dismasted on Leg 5 from Auckland to Itajaí, diverting to Punta Del Este in Uruguay for improvised repairs. Built and designed by Dutch-Australian Yvette Ini Wijnen, this incredible vessel stands over 20m tall, 71ft long and 43ft wide. Built using the West system from Queensland Pine, Gaia’s Dream is the largest Pacific Proa in the World and the only one of her kind. She cruises at approx 25-20kts and her motor runs on veggie oil. She has an inbuilt rainwater collection system and can carry up to 12litres in 2 x 600ltr tanks. This was the largest of many Proa’s built by her (past owner) Yvette-who yesterday handed Gaiasdream over to Gary Hughes and his crew. In this video we’re taking a dry run through a ‘shunt’ (the alternative to tacking) before the boys get underway. Hello Everyone! Due to corona virus restrictions we had to remain in Staniel Cay longer than we'd been planning, but absolutely no complaints! Inner-Island traveling became restricted unless we were headed back to the US. We most definitely made the best of our time there meeting the pigs (Nathalie's favorite part of the entire trip), got the compressor working and went diving for our first time this trip, dove the grotto again (we are slightly obsessed with the Thunderball Grotto) and worked on a few boat projects. COVID-19 UPDATE As of our time in Norman's Cay: Staniel Cay felt like a ghost town under lockdown restriction. We only went to shore for groceries and to take garbage to the garbage dump. Halfway through our second week the government retracted the 90 min exercise period so we were only able to go to shore for necessities. The yacht club restaurant was still open at this time as well to take-out and since we'd been anchored at the island for a while, the grocery clerks and restaurant workers all recognized us and were happy to see us, but new cruisers coming to the island everyone was weary about. At this time masks were also required to be worn around and towards the end of our second week we were not allowed to leave the boat, even to go for a swim or paddle around. After our extended winter sailing break - we can’t wait to go sailing again. We are so exited that our new sailing fun addition - Tiwal arrived. Since sailing on our nearby lakes was not permitted due to Corona, we started to unpack and rigg the Tiwal boat for the first time at home. This was so easy and for the first time it takes a little longer but some configurations remain in place. Leaving the Mar Menor for what we hope will be the last time was an unexpected challenge. A freak current almost drags a local boat through before the bridge opens and we have to take avoiding action not to get caught up in it all. Happily exploring ashore means more than just finding the local shop now and we finally get to the salt flats to see some amazing flamingoes. We have now reached stage two of lockdown in Spain which means we can sail within the province of Murcia. We leave the Mar Menor (again) and head west for a brief, and very expensive, visit to Cartagena before anchoring in La Azohia. Meanwhile the bars and restaurants are opening, people are on the beaches and playing in the water. Life is finding a "new normal" as the seaside towns get ready for a summer season of sorts. We fix our sails and reconfigure the new anchor chain before heading out to sea. In a couple of weeks, we are told, we can sail to Ibiza. There is a sense of relief as the Spanish coast comes back to life. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- You Tube are now putting mid -role adds on videos, but there is a way to see the current videos with no adds at all before they get released to the public. Episode 127 Yes. We are still in lockdown & probably will be for a while. So what does that mean for us here on Lady Africa?? More and more boat projects. This week we get our sails taken down and sent to Ulman sails for some quotations and sizing.. We bake some goodies... food is life! 😂We finally secure our solar panel and can take our ratchet straps off because now with it so calm here at the V&A Waterfront, we can pull the boat so close to the docks and not having to worry about bashing it up like in Port Elizabeth. We also do our first engine service (which consists of oil changes and fuel filter changes) and now she's ready to go again! See ya next week!!
