RECORDED LIVE - For the 14th edition of the RORC Time Over Distance Series, Louay Habib interviews Olympic Silver Medallist Luke Patience with a deep dive into his two previous Olympic campaigns and a look forward to Tokyo and beyond. Luke grew up in Scotland and comes from a sailing family, profoundly passionate about all forms of sailing. Luke shot to fame in the 2012 London Olympic Games, winning silver for Great Britain with Stuart Bithell in the 470 Class. Luke Patience and Elliot Willis won selection for Great Britain for the 2016 Summer Olympic Games in Rio. However, six months before the event, Elliot Willis was diagnosed with bowel cancer and the team had to withdraw. Luke teamed up with Chris Grube and requalified with less than three months to the 2016 Olympic Games. They finished fifth in Rio and have again qualified to represent Great Britain at the next Olympic Games in Tokyo.

We fell quickly in love with the place and it's numerous and superb white sand beaches, and magnificent views as we made our way around the island over our two day tour. The peak of our experience though, was absolutely the famous Dean's Blue Hole. It was a complete sensory overload from diving its clear turquoise water to enjoying its mesmerizing beauty from high above it on the surrounding cliff. The aerial perspective of the hole and surrounding beaches is absolutely stunning and one of the biggest highlights of all our Bahamas cruising to date. In conclusion, I don't think spending $20 is worth it on the West marine product. Clorox works just fine. I decided to restore all the teak outside with teak oil simply because I thinks it is easier to maintain. Since they are exposed to the sun, poly/epoxy/varnish finishing after a couple of years will most likely will have to be refinish. A chegada destes veleiros ao Brasil veio da encomenda de Walter Heuer, alemão naturalizado e primeiro velejador naturalizado brasileiro a participar de uma olimpíada (Berlim – 1936) que, no ano de 1935, pediu ao irmão para produzir o desenho de um veleiro com bolina retrátil, cabinado e confortável para cruzeiros e pernoites na Baía de Guanabara, baseados em uma Iole Alemã adaptada que ele havia visto em uma de suas viagens. Com estes dois veleiros singrando às águas da Guanabara, a Escola Naval do Rio de Janeiro encomendou ao estaleiro Quaresma de Niterói, com base nos planos disponibilizados por Walter Heuer, a construção de outros três veleiros desta classe até então conhecidas por “Sharpies de Cruzeiro 20m²”. Com a compra, o Comandante Alberto dos Santos Franco sugeriu um novo nome para esta classe de veleiros: Classe Guanabara. As regatas disputadas em São Paulo, no Paraná, em Santa Catarina e no Rio Grande do Sul fizeram com que a classe se desenvolvesse e a fabricação aumentou rapidamente. Segundo a AVCG – Associação de Veleiros de Classe Guanabara (1946 a 1967), existiram mais de cem unidades das quais, pelo menos seis foram construídos em Miami – FL – USA, duas na Argentina e duas em Portugal. Os “Guanabaras”, muito marinheiros e bastante competitivos, principalmente depois que ao seu plano vélico foi acrescido de uma genoa e um spinnaker (também existe relato de adição de trapézios para navegadas entre o Rio e Angra), revelaram-se também ótimos barcos para regatas de percurso dentro da baía que lhes dera o nome. Tamanho sucesso, fez com que se tornassem os pioneiros no Brasil na formação do espírito de equipe, tão importante nos barcos de Oceano, para os quais a classe foi um grande celeiro de tripulações.

Sailing in Turkey has turned out to be equivalent to sailing in the winter! Very few boats have ventured out so far & sadly very few of them are people we know, most are stuck back in their respective countries. Regardless we sail on and visit some of our favourite anchorages and mooring along the Turkish coastline.
