We had low expectations and no idea what to expect on our five flight segments that would eventually land us in New York, reuniting with part of our family. Our flights had been canceled once before (back in early June) and when told by the Delta agent (after over an hour of waiting on hold on the phone) the next available flight was late August, we BEGGED for anything earlier. The earliest "next" flight was three weeks later and she suggested we fly through Seattle because it was the most consistent flight coming out of China. We just wanted to get out. We didn't care that the flight path included 5 legs and almost 60 hours of travel time. When 10 July arrived, we didn't believe we would ever get to New York on schedule. We were expecting delays, cancellations and issues. Most of our friends had nightmare stories to share and we were ready to capture our own version on video! Coiling your sheets and halyards is one of the simplest tasks which is done at the end of every days sailing and is often done by the least experienced member of your crew. While it is a simple task, more often than not we see crew go for style over substance, creating an oval loop which looks good but creates issues the next time you go to use the rope. Coiling modern double braided rope in an oval loop creates twists is the rope that can lead to issues the next time you use the line. If you are pulling the rope through blocks or cleats it can result in twists which stop the rope from running freely. The twists in the rope can be easily avoided if you create your coils out of figure 8's, this allows the rope to uncoil easily and more importantly twists free. In this video the team at Bottom up Boats show you how to do both coils, in addition to demonstrating how it the twists can impact the ability of the rope to run through pulleys if you use the oval technique. It is important to note that the figure 8 technique should only be used on double braided rope. Legacy three strand rope should be coiled in ovals, it has the twists built into to line which allow to coil and then uncoil trouble free when you use ovals.

Felia doet een cursus leren manoeuvreren op de motor, in de haven van Amsterdam! Spannend en leerzaam. Ook bezoeken we de vertrekkersdag van de Toerzeilers. Na de zomer staan er nog allerlei klussen op onze lijst. Zo kon je in een eerdere video zien dat veel van de rollen door UV aangetast waren en kapot gingen. Ben heeft ze van de boot gehaald, zodat we nieuwe rollen kunnen laten maken. We maken nieuwe lijnen aan de stootwillen en krijgen we ter voorbereiding op onze reis vaccinaties, waarvoor we thuis bezoek krijgen en 'lek geprikt' worden. Kortom: druk met voorbereidingen op onze grote reis in allerlei vormen. Veel plezier met deze video! En laat je weten wat je er van vond? Wij zijn Ben en Felia. This week we depart from the typical and show how to we are testing out some selective pruning. Basically that means picking specific branches and areas of a plant you want to prune to spur growth in certain directions. As always, I have heard of this concept so wanted to test it. This footage is over a 4-6 week period to show the results of each selective pruning approach and cut on 3 different species of shrubs that we have. We found that the approach works on any of them. Some species grow faster but all in all the process was solid and will be continued as our method to shape and manage our shrubs and large potted plants. This four round circuit will challenge the most elite hiking endurance athletes out there. Follow Coach Mike Kuschner at Sailing Performance Training and try and beat his scores. With this type of max repetition circuit, it is important to know your own muscle endurance capacity so you can give your best effort every round without fatiguing too early. We purchased the dinghy as a kitset in the UK - the European distributor for CLC is a company called Fyne Boat Kits. They're based in Cumbria. If you prefer to do the whole process yourself, you can buy the plans on their own. "Piwakawaka" is the Maori name for the native New Zealand Fantail, a bird which often follows people in the forest (like a tender follows a yacht). These birds are small, cute, agile and very useful (they eat insects like mosquitos and flies!) Today we meet Ante, the base manager from charter company Euronautics in Biograd na Moru, Croatia, about 60 miles from Zadac. The location of this base is perfect to reach various islands and national parks that are absolutely worth a visit. You can easily reach them by boat or catamaran if you're traveling around there.  "Within 20 miles from here you’ll find two national parks: the Kornati National Park and the other one is Park of Nature Telašćica. The other national park is KrKa National Park. About 30  miles from Biograd, you get there through narrow cliffs and it’s wonderful to see. You can get to Skraden  by boat or foot to see the beautiful waterfalls. You can walk around and see the local cuisine."
