Hello friends! In this video, we go back in time to our first time in the Caribbean with Polar Seal. After we finally made it to Martinique, we were eager to start exploring and jumped from anchorage to anchorage to meet our friends and relax. We started in Le Marin where we had made landfall after our passage from Cape Verde. From there, we joined our friends in Les Anses d’Arlet, a beautiful little anchorage West of Martinique, and quickly raised the anchor to meet our friends Andy and Mia in Les Saintes. There, we were finally able to see ICE BEAR, the Swan 59 that they had acquired last year, and I take you inside for a quick tour! These days, we are back in Stockholm for hurricane season. Se vad som händer om du glömmer bort varifrån vinden kommer, och slår och gippar om vartannat. Dessa två övningar gör jag på alla mina kurser. De är roliga, och ger en bra förståelse för vad segling är. Den första är att segla bidevind och blunda, den andra är att segla tillbaka till en tappad boj och stanna bredvid. Learn to understand how boats behave. You have to feel the movements of the boat in your body, only then can you relax and sail without getting a sore neck from watching the Windex all the time. You need to understand how to accelerate and brake, when the boat turns by itself, and how to make it obey you. And you have to test the margins. See what happens if you forget where the wind comes from, and accidentally tack and gybe all the time. I do these two exercises in all my courses. They are fun, and give a good understanding of what sailing is. The first is to sail bidewind and close your eyes, the second is to sail back to a dropped buoy and stay next to it.

Did you know that coral is home to more than 25% of our marine species? It's not just beautiful, but important to their survival! Coral is one of the most amazing creatures living on our planet. Sadly, threats such as rising water temperature and pollution are threatening their survival. With up to 60% of the ocean’s reefs at risk, it’s up to us to help save this endangered species. Our video will help you learn about the importance of coral in our oceans, the different types of corals you can find in the ocean, and how they work and function together with algae. Coral reefs are living communities of colonial organisms made of individual polyps that excrete a bone-like skeleton. This skeleton forms large rock-like structures that are homes for thousands of organisms. Become aware of its biggest threats and take simple steps to reduce your impact. What Are the Main Threats Corals Face? Coral reefs face many threats, mainly from carbon dioxide, rising ocean temperatures, careless water practices, coral mining and damage from oxybenzone (a chemical found in most sunscreens). How can you help? Use a reef-safe sunscreen next time you go to the beach. Chemicals to look for when shopping for a reef-safe sunscreen include: oxybenzone-free, clear zinc-free, nano-free and paraben-free. Try to decrease your carbon footprint, by walking to places as much as possible, instead of taking the car! Do not break off or take corals home with you when you see them under the water. In this week's video, we are livin' free in N.C.! Join us as we sail and explore the beautiful Southern Outer Banks, a.k.a. the Crystal Coast, of North Carolina. Along the way, James talks about our navigation instruments and shares his thoughts on the docking process. (First Mates: always listen to the boat Captain. The dock guys don't always know best.) We set sail from Cape Fear to spend the 4th of July weekend on the beautiful beaches of Cape Lookout. Surprisingly, we felt like we had the place nearly all to ourselves! We anchored up in the back bight of Cape Lookout to enjoy a peaceful day of play and relaxation. I practiced yoga and sipped on a tasty Lost Cat Lemonade Chiller, while James tried out our drone. The next day we headed to the beach and came across a Park Ranger that was investing a potential turtle nest on the beach. She dropped some turtle knowledge on us and we were lucky enough to spot fresh turtle eggs! When it was time to sail on, we took Lost Cat up north to Ocracoke Island. The 58 nautical mile tour took us 9 hours to navigate. Once we arrived, some of the locals stepped up to make sure we were aware that the channels were incorrectly marked due to shoaling (sand in channel). Special shout out to Captain B and an unknown fisherman who helped to guide us safely into the marina! Ocracoke Island is a really special place, where several of our family members and friends hold dear childhood memories. James and I were excited to explore the island ourselves, for the first time. We hope you enjoy seeing the island again! Unfortunately, Ocracoke was devastated in September 2019 by Hurricane Dorian. The water from the surrounding Pamlico Sound completey covered the village, destroying homes and businesses. The island is still recovering, and the community is strong. We were fortunate to visit several of the local businesses, some of which we feature in this video!
