This is the second video, in the Build a rudder series. This shows the glass work and some grinding on the rudder. I know its not proper glass techniques or vacuum bagged or really high tech stuff. But Its just a quick rudder. Though it is taking forever. The next step will be sanding and filling some small gaps in the glass, and then fairing it out. But that will be Part 3

After months of fairing and prep work, it's finally time to paint the hull of my sailboat. I'll be using International Perfection Pro. A paint that can be applied by roller (no tipping needed) and will leave an amazing finish. Crossing the Gulf is a big milestone and right of passage for any sailor heading south. With a swift northern current churning up extra chop it can make for a bumpy ride. We've heard plenty of horror stories, but know to take all that dock talk with a grain of salt. Firsthand experience wins out every time, and we were anxious to be making our biggest, longest crossing yet. We thought we picked a perfect weather window; either way it was our only option as we were on a tight timeline. Making plans with a sailboat is a dangerous game... It turns out we've still got a lot to learn about passage planning. This overnight sail gave us plenty of time to ponder life's biggest mysteries; whether the ocean makes a sound if no one is around on a boat to hear it, whether our boat will hold together long enough to get us safely to shore, and geometric algebra for offshore navigation. Upon arrival in the Bahamas, we contemplate our sanity for deciding to set off in the face of a cold front (which had spawned deadly tornadoes the night prior), and face our first major squall on the water. In dieser Folge ist viel bei uns passiert. Wir segeln in die wunderschöne Bucht von Artatore, da wir dort vor der aufkommenden Bora gut geschützt sind. Unsere erste Bora kommt in der Nacht und bringt Böen bis zu 40 Knoten Wind mit sich. Das heißt für uns maximale Ankerkette raus und auf das Beste hoffen. Mit uns waren am Anfang 28 Yachten in der Bucht. Am nächsten Morgen waren es nur noch 16. Ein wirklich interessantes Schauspiel, die tanzenden Yachten vor Anker bei Starkwind zu beobachten. Zum Glück haben wir das ganze gut überstanden und wir segeln danach weiter in die schöne Inselwelt Kroatiens. Wir können sogar unseren Gennaker mal ausprobieren, was uns große Freude bereitet. Doch dann passiert es beim Ankermanöver.... Da geht leider nichts mehr. Keine Ersatzteile an Bord und keine Chance vom Fleck zu kommen. Da hilft nur eins: Einen Schlepper rufen. Als Corona kommt, geht die Crew. Alle Grenzen sind dicht. Eine Odyssee beginnt. Es beginnt als ein normaler Segeltörn. Mitte Februar bricht Sebastian Kummer in Frankreich auf, um einen werftneuen Katamaran von der Atlantikküste in die Türkei zu überführen. Mit wechselnden Crews will der Wirtschaftsprofessor zunächst nach Göcek segeln und von dort ein anderes Schiff nach Kroatien segeln. Knapp 4000 Seemeilen liegen vor ihm. Dann kommt Corona und die Crew geht. Eine 90-tägige Odyssee voller Bangen und Hoffen beginnt. Ein Land nach dem anderen schließt die Grenzen. Keinen Hafen darf der Segler mehr ansteuern. Kummer ist allein auf dem weiten Meer. In Griechenland vertreibt ihn die Küstenwache mit vorgehaltener Maschinenpistole, in der Türkei versteckt sich der 57-Jährige wochenlang in abgelegenen Buchten. Er nennt es sein „Niemandsland“. Der Professor ist zum Piraten geworden, verfolgt und vogelfrei. Kummer nimmt sein Schicksal an. Mit grenzenlosem Optimismus und einer großen Portion Selbstironie erlebt er die „schönste Quarantäne der Welt“. Dann meldet sich ein mysteriöser Vermittler. Hat der Mann wirklich Verbindungen in höchste diplomatische Kreise oder ist er ein Scharlatan? Das Schicksal des deutschen Wirtschaftsprofessors aus Wien bewegte die Menschen. Aus seinem Versteck gab Kummer Dutzende Interviews für Zeitungen und Magazine, Radiosender und Fernsehstationen in Europa. In der Türkei schaffte er es auf die Titelseite der „Hürriyet“. Der Journalist und Autor Jens Brambusch hat zusammen mit Kummer dessen Notizen, Tage- und Logbucheinträge ausgewertet. Das Buch gestattet intime Einblicke in Kummers Odyssee, erzählt von Segelabenteuern auf hoher See und handelt von der Einsamkeit eines Mannes, der plötzlich und schuldlos von jedem Land verbannt wird.
