November 17, 2020 We were supposed to leave Luperon DR for a 25 hour sail - until Lisa's fears got to her and she gave up. This is a real-time update, first person testimonial about how mentally hard it is to sail - especially in a year fraught with challenges, both personally, professionally, and worldwide. This is it! Our first major overnight sail on our own. No sight of land, several kilometres of sea beneath us and 200 nautical miles of sea ahead of us. In this episode we say goodbye to beautiful Sardinia and set sail for Sicily! Our Mediterranean adventure levels up as we’re joined by feathery stowaways, loads of dolphins, whales and even a sea turtle (you’ll have to look closely for him!) Without a doubt, this has to be our most magical sail yet. This part of our journey revealed to us just how diverse and beautiful our oceans and their critters are, and how important it is that we protect them. He's Afraid of the Ocean!? Hayden's uncle wants to join us on our sail south to Florida, but he has a massive fear of the ocean. We will make a sailor out of him! Hayden asked us to come out and go for a sail with him just around Buzzards Bay to help his uncle get comfortable out on the water on a sailboat. He is currently terrified of the ocean and wants to go sailing with someone that has some experience. While the ocean is a very powerful force, it's not one to fear. So on this short sail we hope to get his uncle ready to sail to warmer waters. Comment below and let us know your thoughts on fearing the ocean, or if you yourself have a fear of it. We finish our sail across the gulf stream, through the Bermuda Triangle, and to the warm and clear water of the Bahamas! Track us on our website! http://www.sweetruca.com Join our crew on Patreon! http://www.patreon.com/ruca Follow us on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram! @rucasailing http://www.facebook.com/rucasailing http://www.instagram.com/rucasailing 0:00 Intro We are sailing offshore from Cape Fear North Carolina, across the gulf stream, directly to the Bahamas. 0:32: Catch a Mahi Mahi Usually, we bring our fishing gear in at night, but this night, we forgot to. Fish On! We reel in a Mahi Mahi in the dark while going 9 knots under sail. Kate fries him up and we have a delicious fresh fish meal. 2:47 Offshore Sailing We keep on trucking! We are almost to the Bahamas. We can feel things getting warmer, which is much needed. We needed shorts weather, rather than the nasty cold of the East Coast in November. Luckily we didn't have to dodge any storms or hurricanes, but we did sail through some winds up to 35 knots on the way down, making for an exciting sailboat passage. 9:31 Arrive in Eleuthera We made it to Eleuthera, the Bahamas after almost a year of hard boat work. It seems like everything is coming together. We navigate the shallow waters, dodging coral heads, on the way to Meeks Island (one of the Bahamas Pig Islands) in the crystal clear turquoise waters of the Bahamas. 10:53 Anchor Down This is what we went sailing for. Dropping anchor in the Bahamas and cooking some steaks on the grill! Yes! Watch a beautiful sunset with us. 12:04 Good Morning We wake up in the morning and Kate climbs the mast to get the lay of the land. What other girls would do a mast climb? Kate is a superwoman! The water is glass calm and beautiful clouds dot the horizon. We jump in and dive our Rocna 33kg anchor to see how it is set! 15:02 Paddle Boarding It is time for some paddle boarding and to explore a beach at a deserted island in the Caribbean! Woo Hoo!!! We made it. #sailingvlog #bahamas #gulfstream #sailing #atlantic #bahamas #caribbean #sail #sailinglife About Us: So who are we? Well, we aren't Sailing La Vagabonde, Expedition Evans, Sailing Doodles, Sailing Uma, Project Atticus, MJ Sailing, Gone With the Wynns, or SV Delos. We aren't Vendee Globe Race sailors, although sometimes Curtis wishes he was one. We don't have a fancy catamaran, but we do have a pretty and fast monohull sailboat. Cruising catamarans like the Fountaine Pajot's, Leopards, and Lagoons can't keep up, but we still like them ;-) We are Kate and Curtis, a YouTube sailing couple, with our sailing dog Roxy, aboard SV Sweet Ruca, a J-Boats J/46 monohull. We used to be sailboat racers on the great lakes (we still are...kind of), and our goal is to cruise around the world via the capes (the wrong way or the hard way). We will see if this will happen or not, as the "new normal" has put quite a damper on our travels. For now, we are holed up in the Windward Islands of the Caribbean making videos and scuba diving. We hope you enjoy our videos and join us on our journey via our YouTube Channel. 'Till Next Time :-)
We go for a morning dip on a nearby reef system before heading up to the beach tiki bar! We'll also go for a flight through a Caribbean anchorage before we find a surprise! A huge thank you to those who help keep our boat afloat by supporting our creative process via Patreon. You can be part of the crew for less than the price of a coffee. https://www.patreon.com/CruisingKiwis On a Yacht far far away, we are girding our loins and attempting to maintain moral when all around us is chaos. A lightening strike to the mast has disabled our electrics. We are cleaning our teeth by torch light, and struggling to maintain battery power, but we are strong and we are resilient, The Cruising Kiwis strike back through the medium of song. Music Luna Keller – I don’t know where I’m going Theme to Star Wars - Rob and Rachel's take on it with accompanied laying hen Simon and Garfunkel – The sound of silence (words by The Cruising Kiwis) John Pearce – Sound of silence guitar solo David Mumford – Ball and chain WHO ARE WE? In 1997, after a disastrous Olympic rowing campaign, Rob decided to row a seven-metre plywood boat, 2500 miles from Tenerife in the Canary Islands to Barbados in the Caribbean. It took 6 weeks and he and his rowing partner, Phil Stubbs, won the inaugural Atlantic Rowing Race. Skip forward to 2014, we invested in Javelot a 43 ft Fountaine Pajot catamaran. Armed only with Robert's 3 years of racing P class yachts from the age of 11 to 13, and Rachel's non existent sailing knowledge, we set off to learn the ropes of ocean sailing. We broke stuff, replaced stuff and got to know our boat before heading offshore with our three children, Finn 17, Declan 15 and Ivan 12, in tow. Through trial and error, we have become confident wayfarers, kind of. Our plan? To sail around the world, meet the locals and record our adventures. Part of the journey will be retracing Rob’s eldest brother Kerry’s travels at sea. Using Kerry’s original letters from the 1970’s we will re trace his movements from Australia through Indonesia and South East Asia to Cambodia where Kerry’s life was cut short after straying into Cambodian waters in 1978. During his time away from work, Jamie lived on board and cruised South East Asia. One of his life dreams is to sail around the world. His plans came together at the end of 2018 when he met a Filipina lounge singer in China. Princess was yearning for a vacation since she had been working many years to support her family. Finally, her siblings got their own jobs and she decided to join Jamie on Jupiter² and go sailing. It was a wild decision for her because she had never sailed before. For the first time, they sail for two weeks around Phuket, Thailand. She began to see what Jamie love about the sea. They both resigned from their jobs in early 2019 and began cruising full time. Hopefully some inspiration to "Quit Job and Go Sailing". Sailing Our #Seawind1600Catamaran from Ft. Lauderdale to Biscayne Bay | #HarborsUnknown Ep. 6 This week we sail from Ft. Lauderdale to Biscayne Bay, spend some time exploring Key Biscayne, Biscayne Bay and Elliott Key, then sail back to Ft. Lauderdale. We departed later than we had intended and with winds forecast at 20 knots we knew it was going to be an interesting sail. It was going to be our longest sail to date on our new #Seawind1600 #catamaran, Wanderlust. It was a great opportunity to assess her performance. We stopped for fuel at the Ft. Lauderdale Marina since we hadn’t fueled up since we received the boat and we were going to be away for a week. There are two 100 gallon tanks on board so we filled each to about 70 gallons. Once we were out of the Port Everglades channel, we pulled up the sails and were off on a beautiful sunset sail. The wind was about 20 knots from the north, just about straight behind us. This caused some pretty rolly seas as the wind hit the current of the Gulf Stream. We decided to put a reef in the mainsail from the start to be safe. The boat speed was a comfortable 10 knots. As day faded into night the winds picked up, gusting to 28 knots. We had put a second reef in the main and our speed slowed a bit. It wasn’t long before the multicolored lights of the Miami skyline greeted us and we were able to anchor just outside of No Name Harbor. The next morning, the first order of business was to take Yoda to shore so she could stretch her legs and go potty. Later that day we had a few friends on board to celebrate my birthday. It had been a while since we’d seen them all due to quarantine so It was so especially nice to see everyone. We are so lucky to live in a place where you can create your own oasis with people you trust. We went for a beautiful day sail on Biscayne Bay. The winds reached 20 knots even in the bay and we cruised at 10 knots. With the #Miami skyline in the distance, aquamarine water, wind and sun we were in paradise. With the daggerboards and rudders up the Seawind 1600 draws just 2’1” but there are quite a few shallow spots so Fabio kept a close eye on the charts and the water. The next morning we dinghied into Bill Baggs State Park to take Yoda for a walk and I went for a run. The anchorage inside is called No Name Harbor and offers a bit more protection but we prefer to have more space and privacy outside. We pulled up to the sea wall beside The Grill restaurant and hopped out of the dinghy. The park was a hub of outdoor activity, with people walking, jogging, biking, and fishing. All at a safe distance. While on my run I came across the Cape Florida Lighthouse. Constructed in 1825, at 65 feet high, it guided mariners off the Florida Reef, which starts near Key Biscayne and extends southward a few miles offshore of the Keys. In 1836 during the Second Seminole War it was badly damaged but was rebuilt in 1846 and now stands at 95 feet. Our friends Ashley and Steve arrived so we sailed over to Elliott Key and hopped into the dinghy in search of snorkeling spots. We should have done our homework because we couldn’t find anything except for grass. A few years back we went to Elliott Key with a friend who knows the area and there were a ton of coral heads and on a separate occasion caught a whole mess of lobster. Not this time. The sunset on our last night was absolutely spectacular. The perfect finish to a wonderful week. In the morning we hoisted the main while still on anchor and set off towards Ft. Lauderdale. We motor sailed past the Cape Florida Lighthouse and Stiltsville. Once out of the channel we unfurled the gennaker and turned off the engine. Unfortunately squalls and unpredictable winds in the high twenties kept us busy so we didn’t film the rest of the sail. Thanks for joining us this week, give the video a thumbs up, subscribe, ding the bell for notifications and if you have a friend who might enjoy it, we’d love it if you’d share it with them. This video is the scary place in my head where i start number crunching and do the theory of changing geometry on a boat engine swap. Hopefully it makes sense and is beneficial in helping you with future swaps. I will follow up with the new rails manufacture, moving the electrics and the controls. Please like and subscribe to help support me in my videos.:-)
It's not really your typical classic. But let me confess why I've done a Sadler 29. It might be one day. And her owner, Andy Hardwick is such a nice chap - I just had to go out on Southampton water for a days sail. Oh, another reason, I've heard on the grape-vine, there are business people on the Hamble, who are thinking of reviving the Sadler class. Now wouldn't that be interesting. Anyway - it's good to be back on the channel, this was filmed well before Covid - so sit back and enjoy the Sadler with with Andy. Please share and thanks again for making us the most watched classic boat channel in the world.

You could have some serious fun with this, especially in big breeze." -------------------------- ** The Tiwal story ** * The Birth of Tiwal * As a girl, the first time our founder Marion Excoffon was told, “No!” by her father when she asked to use the family boat, her life as an inventor began. It was then she started dreaming of building her own craft, an ambitious feat that would come true years later. On the road to creating an innovative high-speed vessel for everyone from kids and first timers to expert sailors who want to test limits, there were a number of prototypes, failures, challenges and headaches. But, if there’s one thing Marion’s known for, it’s her sailor’s grit! * Combining Fun & Technology * The award winning Tiwal concept is easy assembly and storage - maximum fun and performance for watersports and activities. A Tiwal isn’t your average dinghy! Our design is the result of tons of coordination, talent, and technological savvy. * A Growing Global Community * For our community of Tiwal skippers (more than 2,500 worldwide!) all this innovative design means their focus is fixed on the pleasures of watersports and having tons of fun on a responsive sailing craft.
