This week we put Merewether to the test, sailing to the most western island of the Holandeses cays in the San Blas Islands without a working map! Wanting to see more of the amazing archipelago in Panama, we hear the locals talk about a secret spot that was suppose to be next level, so we decide to sail there. The only problem was that our charts that we have been sailing with all from Europe to the Caribbean weren't accurate... Being on edge the hole time, we came in to the passage seeing reefs only 1-2 meters below the water, where our charts showed 28-30 meters. Traversing though the area we decide to sail to another spot, not willing to put our home at more risk. Arriving in Chichime, the party island of the San Blas Islands, Kieran spotted waves and decided to go for a surf. Rowing to shore we discovered a sleeping island, we were only five, six boats in the anchorage and the few locals we saw kept to themselves. We repaired the big rip in our mainsail. It was a joint effort as Steve did the stitching and Karen provided juice via the foot pedal. We finished the last part of our interview with Dawn and Joe. Went racing and gave a tenacious test to the tear repair. It turns out the rip in our mainsail was over 4 feet long. Thank goodness for 4” wide Dacron sail tape. Using the trusty Singer 237 and a zig-zag stitch we sewed over the tape for extra support. The deck made for an awkward sail loft but what the heck. Fortunately, the repair was toward the top of the sail so no one will see it, haha. Decided to race a 9+ mile course. The winds were all over the place but at least the sail repair held. In this video, I'm sharing with you my love for backstay tensioner. I'm not an expert but trying to explain how I believe this works for me on my Yacht without claiming to have the blueprint. I'm again only touching the surface of sail trim as it will be more detailed in-depth videos in the future when I have more recordings to show you. I also had a rig inspection and found a few minor things that need to be addressed, and also a few things I knew about. All the hull sides require a good polishing, we have to anti-foul the hulls and drill some holes in the boat to allow some water to drain out. This is the third time we lift the boat and we have never done it like this time. They left us inside the boat during the lifting, so dangerous! Health and safety is not great around here! Dieser Park ist unter anderem bekannt für seine besonderen Geschöpfe. Wildpferde. Wir dürfen sie frei auf der Heide beobachten. Am Capo Carbonara sind wir mal wieder verzaubert von der Natur Sardiniens, die jetzt Ende März förmlich explodiert. Saftiges Grün und bunte Blumen zeichnen die Landschaft. In Villasimius finden wir einen geschützten Strand, an dem es sich schon ein bisschen nach Sommer anfühlt. Die meisten Campingplätze haben noch zu. Wir zeigen euch, wo wir die nötigen Versorgungen machen. Wasser auffüllen, Grauwasser und Müll entsorgen sowie Wäsche waschen ist auch ohne Campingplatz möglich. Nella prima settimana, siamo comunque riusciti a portare Alby e Maka in Italia per permettere loro di prendere l'aereo da Brindisi per rientrare a Torino. Noi, dopo, abbiamo cominciato la nostra risalita verso nord. #92 Hulumalé et Malé - Les Maldives Catamaran Javerne autour du monde. Ah la ville ! nous avons mouillé l'ancre de Javerne dans le "port" de Hulumalé, qui est l’île accueillant l'aéroport International des Maldives. En plus de son aéroport, la ville est toute neuve, avec les boutiques standard que l'on trouve un peu partout dans le monde, et la construction en cours d'une citée dortoir. L’île de Hulumalé est maintenant reliée par un pont jusqu'à la capitale, Malé. 1.7 km de long par 1 km de large, et plus de 150'000 personnes y cohabitent tant bien que mal. Malé est l’île la plus peuplée du monde. Les voitures, les scooters et les piétons s'y entassent, et n'y cherchez pas un charme spécial, car il n'y en a pas. Nous aurons quand même été visiter ses traditionnels marchés de fruits et légumes, ainsi que le marché aux poissons. La population par contre est très accueillante, et toujours prêt à discuter avec nous. Des gens vraiment très gentils. Et comme toujours de l'humour et de la gaîté à bord de Javerne. Ah the city! we anchored Javerne in the "port" of Hulumalé, which is the island hosting the Maldives International Airport. In addition to its airport, the city is brand new, with the standard shops that can be found all over the world, and the construction of a dormitory city. The island of Hulumalé is now connected by a bridge to the capital, Malé. 1.7 km long by 1 km wide, and more than 150,000 people live there as best they can. Malé is the most populous island in the world. Cars, scooters, and pedestrians pile up there, and don't look for a special charm, because there aren't any. We will still have visited its traditional fruit and vegetable markets, as well as the fish market. The population on the other hand is very welcoming, and always ready to discuss with us. Boats have wet surfaces that bounce and tilt. Sailing boats have a boom that flies around. Docks and ramps can be slippery. Injuries happen in our sport. Ontario is rolling out Rowan’s Law, in response to concussion injuries in sports. It’s the right time to learn: • how to recognize concussion in yourself or your team-mates • what to do if you suspect a concussion • how to achieve a return to sports • special responsibilities of coaches and event organizers The main part of the talk will be given by NSC member Dr. Cathy Duchesne. Cathy is a physician with training in Emergency Medicine. She is co-owner of “Corrie Doon”, an Ontario-32 keelboat at NSC. Dominic will outline the responsibilities of sailing event organizers. Dominic races his Albacore dinghy "Skye" at NSC and race crews on friends' keelboats, starting on C&C 25 "Sir Behari" and most recently J/80 "Segueh". His favorite time sailing is when one of his grown-up kids joins him. His volunteer contribution to the club is in sailing event organization. He has chaired 5 regattas and recently completed a term as Fleet Captain, steering the largest club race program in North America through smooth and choppy waters. The Government of Ontario has developed concussion awareness resources https://www.ontario.ca/page/rowans-law-concussion-safety , which will be the basis for this presentation. Ontario Sailing has provided codes of conduct and procedures. These can all be found at Ontario Sailing https://ontariosailing.ca/concussion-information . On quitte Boqueron en direction de La Parguera, on retourne enfin à la pêche et on se baigne avec nos amis avant de naviguer vers l’île déserte d’Isla Caja Muerto. Cette île est assurément un de nos coups de cœur à Puerto Rico. On a tellement aimé cette île qu’on y retourne une 2e fois, mais cette fois-ci, avec mon garçon Loik qui nous visite pour la semaine. On y passe des moments inoubliables autant dans l’eau que sur terre. *Épisode filmé début décembre 2020 [ RECETTE HAMBURGER VEGAN ] Ingrédients 1 canne d’haricot noir 1 gousse d’ail ½ cuillère à thé de cumin ¼ tasse sémoule de maïs (cornmeal) ½ oignon ½ poivron rouge (optionnel) ¼ cuillère à thé de poivre de cayenne (optionnel) Instructions : 1. Chauffé le four à 375 F 2. Dans une poêle faire cuire tout sauf la sémoule de maïs 5-8 min 3. Transféré les ingrédients dans un grand bol et piler le tout 4. Ajouter la sémoule de maïs (cornmeal) et bien brasser 5. Avec vos mains ou une tasse à mesurer de ½ faite 6 boulettes d’hamburger 6. We BOUGHT a SAILBOAT with NO EXPERIENCE... and wish we had a RIGGING INSPECTION! You should always get a RIG INSPECTION! Unfortunately, we made a rookie error when we bought a sailboat and have now learnt the hard way, with an ever-increasing list of mast and rigging repairs. After sailboat shopping around the UK we fell in love with our Gib’sea 372 Indiana. With slightly rose tinted glasses, we put an offer down and soon she was ours! What we did not realise was the standing rigging that had been replaced back in 2019, was not done correctly and could not be certified by Rigit UK (our rigger). Also, our boom needed a full refurb along with a host of other mast work. So, our sailboat buying experience has not gone exactly to plan, but as we've been told, does anyone's really? And let's face it, our issues are nothing compared to the recent Suez Canal fail...! We wanted to share this video to ensure anyone thinking of buying a sailboat can learn from our experiences. Rule no. 1 – Get a RIG INSPECTION! Whether you are looking at a second hand sailboat (ex-charter or privately owned), its worth getting the rigging inspected by a professional so you can ensure you pay a fair price, but ultimately, that you are safe at sea on your boat life journey.
