Op 3 april 2021 zeilen we richting Enkhuizen. Na 11 uur kruisen van Marina Muiderzand via Lelystad kwamen we in Enkhuizen aan. Naar Lelystad 15-20 knopen hoog aan de wind met de High Aspect fok en volledig grootzeil. Van Lelystad naar Enkhuizen met de High Aspect fok en twee reven in het grootzeil, 20-27 knopen wind. Het paasweekend van 2021 stond in het teken van een solo rondje Noord-Holland. Het leek een rondje met een stabiele wind van 15 knopen te worden en ik besloot linksom te gaan. In de week voor vertrek bleek dat de wind Noord Noord-West was. Dat bleef zo en de wind nam toe met 15-30 knopen tegen. Ik had in mijn plan gezet dat bij 5 BF of meer ik Mark mee zou vragen en die stond stand-by. Op de ochtend zelf om 5.30 uur vroeg ik of Mark mee wilde. Het was een pittige tocht aan de wind en na 11 uur varen besloten we het rondje een andere wending te geven. Het was voor mij een goede ervaring om solo te varen met 20-27 knopen aan de wind. De boot deed het prima, ik voelde me ontspannen, het sluizen ging relaxed en Mark was stand-by. De dag erna gingen we naar de Markerwadden en maakten we er een heerlijk weekend van. Als solozeiler is je stuurautomaat je tweede man. Die moet betrouwbaar zijn, dus heb je het liefst een tweede of derde als reserve. Dit is mijn reserve autohelm waarmee ik het overstag ga oefen. After a skate to the Yamba Bar, we are happy to see the crossing conditions have eased and it looks safe to go. We set off from Iluka in the early morning, heading north towards the Gold Coast. We of course still need to keep an eager eye out for any remaining debris that has been swept out to sea following the floods. This week I take apart the sailboat refrigeration systems on Samantas. The systems in the 1970s were charged with R12 refrigerant although extremely effective for sailboat refrigeration, R12 is much more damaging to the environment should systems leak Freon into the atmosphere. Modern systems on a sailboat use 134a. It is possible to change from R12 refrigeration to 134a but the oil in the compressor systems will need to be changed as well. Sailboat refrigeration systems are interesting in that often times the refrigeration sled is a separate from the fridge, in Samantas its mounted under the cockpit and plumbed into the top loading refrigeration box in the galley. In this episode, our Volvo Penta engine dies suddenly as we sail in light winds through the Dominican Republic and Bahamas and stop at the creepy scene of a murder suicide. Despite rushing to get out of the hurricane box, we experience a lot in a short period: boat troubles, stunning empty anchorages in national parks, boys competing, dream jobs that end in death, risky sailing, shipwrecks and unexpected romance.

In this episode, we solo sail from San Pedro to the Isthmus, Two Harbors, Catalina Island. After a fantastic sail, we drop the hook in 71 feet of water near Little Fisherman's Cove. The wind is blowing 15+ knots at the anchorage, with swell coming in from the Northwest and it makes for a pretty rolley and uncomfortable couple of nights. We meet up with sv Ohana for a 7 mile hike on the West end of Catalina, with fantastic views of Cat Harbor, the Isthmus, Cherry Cove, Fourth of July Cove, Emerald Bay, and Howlands Landing. In this episode we put the Mirror Dinghy up against the Catamaran and find out that the Mirror Dinghy sails up wind better than the catamaran. Newbie wannabe pirates invest in a few boats, we have a Mirror Dinghy, Bruce Roberts 34, Top Hat 25 Mk1, Timber Hull 23 Alan Rice, and a 14 foot Catamaran which we are repairing, sailing around going on adventures. We are based in Adelaide, South Australia and are new to sailing so we are learning as we go, what an amazing ride stay tuned as we get up to mischief, have a laugh and go on some crazy adventures. On a calm day we explore the mangroves and one of the largest frigate bird sanctuaries in the world before heading into town to grab some groceries. Rigging checks, strong winds, opposing currents and some tricky sailing conditions, make this episode like a lollies variety pack, it's got a bit of everything going on. We pick up our second hand hydro-vane from Linton Bay Marina and start heading towards what some of our friends call the surfing paradise of the Caribbean. With wind sitting around 20-25 knots we start our journey with opposing current hitting us in the face. With all these conditions combined the sea state gets messy with waves standing up to around 3-4 meters. Day two of the journey shows the complete opposite conditions, when the wind take a turn against us. With Isabelle's birthday looming we decided to motor the 50 miles left of the sail and crawl in at around 4 knots fighting the strong current and wind. Join our crew!
