Chris and I were born one week and four days apart, me being the eldest despite general assumptions. To commemorate our circumnavigation around the sun we decided to take the week off and have a "birthday bash" at Santa Cruz Island! There's nothing quite like realizing you're the only souls on an entire island! In this episode we continue our exploration of the magical and remote Florida Keys. After a great nights sleep Kazza decides to take the paddle board out for a spin in the calm and sunny conditions and paddles right over a nurse shark. The shark isn't spooked at all and she gets some great shots of it swimming under her. After taking care of our daily boat chores, like cleaning the bottom, we decide to go breath underwater and take Maggie out to the Wind Jammer Wreck. It's an amazing experience to scuba dive such a huge sailboat from the era of working cargo sailing ships. The visibility is AMAZING and we're surrounded by barracudas, schools of fish, and some incredibly healthy coral! After our dive we take Maggie out to Loggerhead Key and find ourselves completely along with the entire island, lighthouse, and beach to ourselves. The Little Nugs is in her element and absolutely loves exploring the beach while we take turns snorkeling. The weather takes a shift and we batten down the hatches for a 3 day blow where the winds are hitting 30 knots. We sit good and comfortable after moving Delos to a more protected spot. Finally, Brian goes on a night time-lapse mission and gets some incredible shots of the stars rotating behind Fort Jefferson! For more sailing around the World Action! Catalina 30 keel stub repair begins this week. After we ran our electric sailboat aground, we decided now was the time to permanently fix the Catalina smile. Originally, Catalina yachts put a wood core in the keel stub up until the mid 80s. Due to the porous nature of the wood core, water would become trapped in it, and eventually led to a crack on the forward part of the keel, known as the Catalina smile. After realizing their mistake, they put out an official repair guide to permanently fix the smile, and didn't include the wood core in their newer models. This week, we begin removing the nuts and plates around the keel bolts and get a feel for how much wood core there is, and begin removing it from underneath the bilge. It's never fun cutting a hole in your boat, but we move forward nonetheless. Enjoy part 1 of the keel stub repair. Part 2 will come several weeks from now. Safe sailing. Boat: White Shadow is a Van De Stadt ‘Seal’ 36 (11 metres). She is hand made in steel, 2004, with a round bilge (hull) and a modified coach roof. This makes her a ‘one off’ and in my opinion the most beautiful Van De Stadt 36 ever built. The camera gear: Main camera is a Panasonic Hc- V700 with a Rode External mic with a sponge and dead kitten attached. Action, underwater scenes and small blogging is done with two Osmo action cams. Some boat shots are done with a Dji gimbal camera. Editing: Final cut pro on a Macbook. Most of the material for each video is filmed over a period of several weeks or so and the editing of each episode is normally done over a day. This process can take longer if original music is used or permissions are needed for copyrighted materials etc. Much time is spent sorting out technical problems. In this case I normally get the help of a younger person who understands computerie stuff! There are also times when filming, editing and uploading is not possible due to being at sea or in locations with no internet access. Content: I have found that filming and releasing material over a period of time is better than doing ‘vlog’ style videos and trying to make episodes out of whats happened in a week, regardless if it’s good content or not. By filming over a period of time I can be more selective in what goes into each video. My aim is to avoid ‘bland and mundane’ and have at least one or two exciting and interesting events in every video. Every video has to be entertaining. Comments and being at sea: I love reading your comments. Most weeks Im able to read everyone. I cant reply to everybody but I do read and enjoy them. Keep them coming! There are times that It might seem I'm not on the internet for certain periods, this is normally when Im at sea on passage. While Im out on the Ocean I have completely no communications with the outside World. As we make the most of our time hiding from the wind we explore Butterfly Bay and go for a dive in Manta Ray Bay where we meet the locals. Huge Hump Headed Maori Wrasse, Giant Trevally & of course Manta Rays. Sailing Zatara assist emotional reunion between mother and teenage son separated by covid 19. Separated by the covid 19 pandemic travel restrictions, I have not seen my teenage son for over eighteen months. But that is about to change. Rob and Finn have been secretly conspiring to get Finn out to Western Australia, where we have been sailing. They want it to be a surprise, but it's going to take a small army to pull it off. Rob recruited his niece Jillian to pick Finn up from the airport in Perth and get him to his connecting flight to Exmouth where Jordan from @ExpeditionDrenched met him and drove him to Tantabiddi near Ningaloo Reef. Keith from @SailingZatara picked Finn and Jordan up at the jetty and took them back to his boat where Finn was hidden in plain sight. It was a huge surprise and a very emotional reunion. It took 6 weeks and he and his rowing partner, Phil Stubbs, won the inaugural Atlantic Rowing Race. His first taste of a blue water ocean crossing. Skip forward to 2014 and, married with three children, Rob and Rachel purchased Javelot a 43 ft Fountaine Pajot catamaran. Armed only with Rob's 3 years of racing P class yachts from the age of 11 to 13, and Rachel's non existent sailing knowledge, we set off to learn the ropes of ocean sailing. We broke stuff, replaced stuff and got to know our boat before heading offshore with the kids, Finn 18, Declan 16 and Ivan 13, in tow. Through trial and error, we have become confident wayfarers, kind of. Our plan? To sail around the world. Part of the journey will be retracing Rob’s eldest brother Kerry’s travels at sea. Using Kerry’s original letters from the 1970’s we will re trace his movements from Australia through Indonesia and South East Asia to Cambodia where Kerry’s life was cut short after straying into Cambodian waters in 1978. #97 Guyane partie 3. Marais de Kaw, Carbet Kunana Les averses se succèdent sans discontinuer. Il parait que l’année est exceptionnellement abondante en eau. Une fois que nous le savons, il suffit de se faire une raison et s’adapter à la météo, mais nos batteries ne voient pas ça du même œil ! Privées des recharges produites habituellement par leurs panneaux solaires, elles s’épuisent en criant famine ! La disette est si affaiblissante qu’elle nous fait douter sur l’espérance de leur vie ! Rester à leur chevet ne servant à rien, nous embarquons à bord d’une coque Ariane Space, en nous laissant guider sur les marais de Kaw. Situés dans la région de Régina, les marais en question forment une immense réserve qui se compose essentiellement de mangroves, de savanes inondables et de forêts tropicales humides. Entre les Moucou-Moucoux, ces plantes de plus de trois mètres aux grandes feuilles sagittées, le hors-bord de notre plate alu résonne ! Les caïmans nous ont entendu de loin, ils se planquent, c’est à se demander s’ils ne sont pas une légende, tout comme la centaine d’habitants du seul village de Kaw, introuvables ! La vie semble avoir été mise entre parenthèse. Une vieille cabine téléphonique, quelques cases soumises aux herbes accaparantes, des ruelles désertiques… On se croirait perdu dans un hameau abandonné… Chaque voyage est différent. J’ai entendu dire qu’au premier voyage, on apprend, au second, on s’enrichit. On pourrait tout aussi dire qu’au premier, on découvre, au deuxième, on s’instruit. Vivre la Guyane, c’est d’abord apprendre à la connaitre et comment mieux l’appréhender qu’aux côtés de passionnés ! Notre annexe est chargée pour trois jours. Tout y est ! De la touque traditionnelle à l’indispensable hamac, en passant par les neuf lampes rechargeables, objet d’un engouement presque phobique de mon capitaine. C’est vrai qu’à côté de la barque que s’est fabriqué Mario, sur le fleuve, notre gonflable a moins d’allure ! Elle est surtout moins adaptée aux conditions, mais notre parcours ne doit pas nous faire passer de rapides, les sauts comme ils sont appelés ici, et les obstacles devraient être surmontables. Vu du drone, la canopée pourrait faire penser à un immense champ de brocolis, de vrais jardins suspendus couvrent les hautes branchent. Dessous, en bordure de la Kunana, nous investissons le carbet le plus isolé. La pluie vient de s’arrêter. La nature s’éveille avec la délicatesse des ailes d’un papillon. Elle compose avec le scintillement des gouttes d’eau qui se détachent des feuilles, le déplacement d’une fourmi, les formes et les couleurs. Sur le fleuve ourlé de ses lisières impénétrables, nous tentons de voir l’incroyable, de saisir les émanations, de deviner l’esprit de la forêt. Tout est émerveillement, de ces lianes tortueuses à l’amour de ce colibri pour ses petits ! Dans ce milieu humide et hostile, tout l’art de faire un feu devient indispensable. La nuit nous enrobe, les flammes s’attisent, le concert nocturne débute. L’éclat d’une lampe à pétrole fait vaciller nos ombres. En plein cœur de cette Amazonienne, Mario nous enseigne. Féru de serpents, il nous initie à leur observation. Torches à la main, nous arpentons la berge, des yeux rouges doivent nous avertir… Bien que nous soyons revenus bredouilles de notre exploration de la veille, il faut une certaine dose de détachement pour arriver à nous baigner dans l’eau marronnasse du fleuve. Ne pensons pas aux piranhas, reptiles et autres petites bestioles sympathiques, d’ailleurs nos amis ne s’en font pas eux ! Il parait de toute manière que les animaux ne sont pas curieux par ici ! On va les croire sur parole en profitant de cette eau vivifiante et de cet environnement énergisant. La vie foisonne. La mousse tapisse les chablis qui ont entrainé dans leur chute les épiphytes ; lézards et chenilles s’en font de vrais domaines. Les têtards pullulent, l’oiseau sentinelle, lui, fait retentir constamment son chant aigu et puissant. Immergés dans cette belle émeraude, en prenant le temps d’écouter la nature, l’imagination s’emballe ! Mais il ne faut pas juste l’entendre, mais vraiment l’écouter, comme on écoute le crépitement d’un feu de bois ou le ressac des vagues … Une légère brise fait sécher les voiles de Black Lion. Il s’est bien comporté en attendant sagement notre retour. Trois jours loin de lui, ce n’est pas rien, c’est même un gros effort quand on sait les risques que comporte un mouillage sans surveillance ! Nous avions tout de même donné des recommandations à nos voisins au cas où, mais c’est toujours un stress. Ce soir, sous un intense ciel rose, nous sommes rassurés, Blacky n’est plus seul, nous allons retrouver notre cabine et certainement que dans un sommeil plus profond nous rêverons de cette forêt qu’il faut protéger. What a fantastic day this was, been a long time coming and finally done. Looking forward to moving onto the sides now. I think the overlap/sika area was a bit small with the VHBT but there is still plenty on and with the second coat around the edge i am happy it will last for a long long time.. I pretty much copied the method that Ricky and Simone used on Sailing Lady Africa, the video is linked in at around 12.05. The products used were all Sika: Activator - 205 Fibreglass primer - 206 G+P Acrylic primer - 209 sealant - 295 UV I would link from Sika website but a lot cheaper available if you take your time shopping around and on ebay etc. As good as everything is rated and the limited sun in the UK i will make the mesh window covers to extend even longer. The 44Cup Marstrand had a tricky start today off the Swedish paradise island bearing its name. A weather front slowly moving across the west coast of Sweden brought with it solid 25 knots winds, 30+ gusts and the real prospect of no racing for the eight owner-driver RC44s. However mid-afternoon, as the front’s torrential rain arrived, so the wind dropped and PRO Maria Torrijo was able to coax the teams and their high performance one designs out on the water.

There she goes! The Bestevaer 53 MY 'Bryndis' was loaded onto a containership of over 180m length that will transport the motoryacht up stream over the Rhine to Karlsruhe, were she will be unloaded. From there the motoryacht will be sailing back for an Open Ship tour through Germany. She will stop in several cities a long the way, making it possible for prospects and press to come on board and experience the yacht for themselves.

In Sydney, the MC38 Fleet had their third regatta on Pittwater, at the Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club. It was like a bucket of ice had been dumped on the fleet but the racing was hot. The Hooligans won. Last week we had Part 2 of the Sailing Squad who now are on the starting line, competing against 400 sailboats! It's time to put into practice what they have been taught over the last two days. The race across Lake Geneva is a real challenge. Physical, strategic and, above all, human. One of the great stories to come out of the recent Vendee Globe Race was British sailor Pip Hare, who battled the elements, and her boat, to finish. We show her with her trophy.
