Skorpios takes line honours in Cherbourg. Dmitry Rybolovlev’s ClubSwan 125 Skorpios took line honours in the Rolex Fastnet Race, completing the 695nm course in 2 days, 8 hours, 35 minutes and 5 seconds © Paul Wyeth/pwpictures.com Dmitry Rybolovlev’s ClubSwan 125 Skorpios took line honours in the Rolex Fastnet Race this evening, after crossing the finish line in Cherbourg at 2015 BST. Their total elapsed time for completing the 695 nautical mile course from Cowes to Cherbourg was 2 days, 8 hours, 35 minutes and 5 seconds. Competing in her first offshore race, the recently launched Skorpios came through a brutal first 12 hours of the race in good shape. As the breeze softened, Skorpios extended away from her chief rivals for line honours including previous winner George David’s Rambler 88 and the strong IMOCA fleet. Having only started sailing in the last few years, this was owner Dmitry Rybolovlev’s first offshore race which he experienced with his daughter Anna Rybolovleva, also her first time offshore racing. “We’re very pleased with the boat, the team was great. We want to thank the whole team for such great efforts. We were trying to stay conservative, especially in the high wind at the start, but we’re excited to see what the boat can do in future races. Rounding the Fastnet Rock was kind of magical, it felt like a really special moment.” Skipper Fernando Echavarri was relieved to have come through the Rolex Fastnet Race with the boat intact. “The boat is very strong, we backed off on speed coming out of the Solent, but so was everyone else,” said the Spanish professional. “We had an idea of what the boat might be able to do, but we didn’t know for sure, so we learned a lot on this race. “The owner is super happy, he’s a good sailor but new to offshore sailing and he enjoyed the experience a lot. I think there is a very good chance we will be back for the Rolex Fastnet Race.” Finishing at 1522 BST on Tuesday afternoon, was the on-the-water leader in the MOCRA class – American Jason Carroll’s MOD 70 trimaran Argo, which sailed a relatively lonely race after Giovanni Soldini’s near sistership Maserati retired after her exploded winch. “The start in 27 knots was spectacular, but everyone pulled off a good port tack start and was safe, which was good,” recounted Argo’s British multihull legend, Brian Thompson. “It was pretty bumpy out there and great racing. We were alongside for Sodebo for a little while and obviously alongside Maserati for a really long time, all through the day. It was sad to see them having to retire.” Thompson said that Argo’s rounding of the Fastnet Rock was the best of his many, many roundings, both in this race, other races and his record attempts. “It was such clear skies and a pleasant 10 knot breeze. The sun was shining, it was warm: It was Mediterranean sailing on the south coast of Ireland.” Argo is the first boat in the fleet to take the longer route around the North of the Casquets TSS en route to the Cherbourg finish line. “That was because we had five knots of tide against us on the final approach,” explained Thompson. “If we had come the other way we would have been VMG running with five knots of tide against us. Another factor was that the wind that was there - 8-10 knots - was up by Start Point. After going around the TSS, we then crossed the worst of the tidal stream [heading south] at high speed.” #RolexFastnetRace

"The Race" is the documentary about the Chicago Yacht Club Race to Mackinac from start to finish, but more importantly, the actual experience of the race as told by the countless competitors turned "on board reporter" to help T2PTV Sailing on Demand tell the story of this 112-year-old race. The traditions, old and new, the challenge and the range of conditions explain why the families on board these boats are bonded by blood, sweat and joy.

Ahoy, welcome back. In this video we share what we get up to for 4 months. From strong winds, to settling into marina life, making new boat friends, going back home to France for Christmas, teaching yoga & meditation to tackling big boat projects, there's a bit of everything in this one! We have fun staying put in one place for a while and enjoy what we get up to! Excited for Spring and to start sailing again, still some jobs to do on the boat but we make great progress. Boat projects include: scraping, sanding and revarnishing (painting) all our exterior brightwork, replacing our fridge set up, revamping and converting our quarter berth, redoing our shower sump, repainting the cockpit and probably more... #boatlife #sailing #livingonaboat Thanks for watching! Work never stops. In this episode, I decide to replace a broken aft bilge pump. This is a safety factor - if water is pouring in for some reason, you need functioning pumps to at least keep you afloat long enough to get to shore, or get a tow. Being under the aft cabin dresser, I spent a lot of time with my head down in the depths! Next, and at random, I decided to repair the hot water tank. It had a slight drip, the wood underneath was wet, and I was afraid that the wood would get saturated and start getting punky. After a few trips to various stores to get a replacement, I got lucky at a nearby marina and found a newer replacement. About an hour later and it was all done. And no leaks! Finally, I put a waterproof case on my Akaso camera and took the plunge, as it were. Into the river to see what I could see, and to see if there was any leakage (there wasn't!). This will be fun in upcoming videos. And Chloe made a friend!! Bella is a cockapoo being looked after by friends of our, and they came by for a quick visit. The dogs did the inevitable butt-sniffing, then started to play. It was fun to watch! A work of caution - the weather is hot and muggy and it's critical to keep your pets hydrated and out of the sun as much as possible!

Sailing across the Atlantic ocean is a great ocean passage for most sailing couples, sailing around the world... But for Rebecca Childress, and Michael Hayward, after the loss of solo circumnavigator Patrick Childress a year ago, this passage proves to be one stormy passage on an emotional level for both sailors. Emotions run very high and both of them almost sail off in to the sunset in opposite directions. But St Helena, and Ascension offer so much for sailors...and its hard to just sail by without stopping. SO they risk stopping and there is just so much at risk when sailing oceans with so few islands to stop at. The intertidal zone is the area where the ocean meets the land between high and low tides. Sea creatures and plants arrange themselves vertically in the intertidal zone depending on their ability to survive extreme conditions, including changes in salt concentrations, sun exposure, drying out and predation. With simple household materials, kids can mimic how different marine plants and animals can adapt to these challenging conditions. Hey Y’all, Our 13-year old cat, Bowie, loves watching bird videos. She prefers birds over everything else (i.e. squirrels, mice, etc.), but we noticed that she was particularly engaged when a red cardinal appeared during a video, so Michael found a red cardinal toy (that chirps when it moves). We store it in a cabinet, but if Bowie's hankering for it, she tries to slide the cabinet open like a maniac! 😆 We're Esther and Michael, an American couple with writing and photography backgrounds. In 2017, we sold our loft in Atlanta and moved aboard a 1994 Island Packet 35 named Hope that needed some love (and boat work after sitting on the hard for over three years!). As we learn how to become better sailors, we’re especially interested in living small to gain abundance—cultivating sustainable living habits and having more time for nature and art! And we're learning about ways to 'live small' by reducing our waste footprint on and off the boat! If you liked this video and want to support our story production, please check out our links below. Welcome to episode 39 of Sailing Melody Season 2 Massive progress this week as we more or less totally rebuild the cockpit combings creating a much better mounting point for the winches and also much better headroom in the aft end of the boat. Two solid days of working from dusk til dawn were hugely productive as Andy cut away most of the old cockpit combings and prefabricated new ones in a box configuration which is so much better than what was there originally. In fact the original design schematics show the combings going all the way out to the topsides but we didn't do that, partly because that would have meant repositioning the cleats and re-fabsicating the station posts and pushpit, but also because Melissa just doesn't like that look aesthetically. Remember we're doing all of this so we can go full time cruising as a sailing family in a few years time. This is obviously a huge refit and refurbishment of this big, old, abandoned steel yacht and it's not only time consuming, it's complicated and quite expensive so we really do value any help we can get, whether it's helpful advice and comments on the video or gifts through our Amazon Wishlist or actual contributions through Patreon, Paypal and Ko-Fi. Catamaran Honu crew set sail again after many months of having a 2nd baby and boat work. We head to New England this 2021 summer! First stop is Block Island in Rhode Island but first we sail past New York City and see the statue of liberty from our boat! Sailing with 2 kids is a big adjustment but with some trial and error we know it will get easier once we get the swing of things. With a strict lockdown looming, we need to get out! Let's go sailing! https://www.sailingnandji.com In this episode, we narrowly escape the regulations and head out for a shakedown sail before strict lockdown rules are implied to the country. We want to get out of the confinements of the marina and be at anchor where life is more normal. With strict regulations coming into play at mid night, we take the opportunity to head out for further sea trials of Nandji in preparation for leaving Malaysia soon. We want to test out all the systems on Nandji and make sure she is ready for the long journey ahead, sailing back to Australia. Thank you. https://www.paypal.com/paypalme/Sailingnandji Grab some Sailing Nandji merch and help support our adventures whilst looking good! https://sailingnandji-shop.com With no sailing experience, we bought a yacht, got it blue water cruising ready and set off from Australia sailing to the Pacific! We have since cruised through New Caledonia, Vanuatu, the Solomon islands, Papua New Guinea, Indonesia and then onto the boat yard in Malaysia to prepare for the years to come. With a new engine, we continued onto Thailand, then back down into Indonesia and specifically West Sumatra to live the island life and chase the surf. With our Sailing plans changing, we returned to Thailand to wait for the weather and begin our journey to the northern route of the Indian Ocean to Sri Lanka before heading south across the Indian Ocean once cyclone season has finished and the trade winds begin! We were on our shake down sail when the mooring we were on failed and our home ended up on the reef... We saved the old girl and got her back to the boat yard for repairs to continue on our adventure! Ready to sail across the Indian Ocean, we were only days away from leaving when the pandemic begun closing countries around us... We are stuck for now, but enjoying the slower pace as we have just had our first baby, born in Malaysia! Completing our second major refit, Nandji is nearly ready for the onward journey back to Australia for summer. The process of building a superyacht is extremely complex, so it's not surprising that mistakes are often made...and occasionally are even serious enough for an owner to reject the vessel! This vlog takes a look at the most common mistakes, and some of the causes for rejection.

WE have sailed over 3000 nautical miles crossing the Pacific Ocean from Mexico to Hawaii and after three weeks at sea, we have spotted our first sight of land. Our sea legs are anxiously looking forward to stepping foot on solid ground. Land Ho HAWAII! WE made it to the port of Hilo, Hawaii and couldn't be more excited to finally have our passage beers. On this episode, we check in and eat our first meal on shore after weeks at sea. Before we set foot on land however, we have some much needed cleaning up and fixing to do to the boat.

The Pacific Ocean Crossing - 36 days, out in one of the biggest ocean in the world done and dusted and it was just the two of us, here is a bit of a taste of our experience. 4130NM travelled, 864 hours of sailing & watching the ocean go by, over 700 litres of fuel burned, 900 litres of water utilised, 2 lines chaffed, 1 d-shackle broke, ripped spinnaker, over 100 squid & flying fish came to say hello, 4 fish got away, 2 fish landed, no more than 2 hours sleep at one time, biggest sea was 4M and our strongest wind 30knots. We went from big seas to sunny days, lightning storms to rain squalls, strong winds to a calm breeze, banging and crashing waves all around to a millpond ocean. This has been one of the most mentally challenging things we have done in our life to date. Some days you feel like jumping off the side of the boat to get off the roller coaster ride that does not stop or you just want to curl up and hide in a dark corner away from all the banging and crashing, but most days you are sitting on top of the world. The sun is shinning, vibes are high and you can’t wipe the smile off your face. Being out at sea for this long has been one of those experiences that pushes you to become better and you find out how strong you really can be 💪 The last 1000NM we had extremely light variable winds, trying to keep Inspire moving at a steady pace above 4 knots with hardly any fuel left onboard meant many sleepless nights making sail change trying to stop the sails from flapping about while we waited for wind.... the frustrations were real! Your mind is a powerful tool, focusing on achieving our challenge, sailing Inspire into our home waters the South Pacific and that feeling of accomplishment after stepping foot onto a tropical island after days at sea has kept us super positive throughout the whole sail. Would we do it again? Who knows... but what I do know is that we are super proud we have done it!

The extraordinary 32m long Ultime Maxi Edmond de Rothschild showed a clean pair of heels to the rest of the fleet in the 49th Rolex Fastnet Race arriving this evening (Monday 9 August) at 20:24:54 BST, setting a new record for the race’s new longer 695 mile course to Cherbourg of 1 days 9 hours 15 minutes and 54 seconds. As the huge blue and white trimaran arrived in Cherbourg’s Port Chantereyne, the marina was packed with cheering fans of the team and of its famous crew of six led by co-skippers Franck Cammas and Charles Caudrelier. Also on board were David Boileau, Erwan Israel, Morgan Lagraviere and Yann Riou. “The boat is amazing – we have improved since last year, so we are very happy,” said Caudrelier. “The team has done a fantastic job over the last year to develop the boat and we can’t stop that because new boats are coming. We are very happy about this race and the result of it, and the way it has happened.” After an exciting start Maxi Edmond de Rothschild exited the Solent and then led the Rolex Fastnet Race fleet south towards the Channel Islands. Here, significantly, they tacked further south than their main Ultime rivals. “For us it was important to get south to get the shift,” continues Caudrelier. “It was obvious and we wanted to stay on the left of the fleet. Then we were worried about getting too close to the south of England approaching the Sevenstones [lightship], so we were very happy with what we did. We didn’t make too many mistakes.” Cammas added: “Charles and Erwan [Israel] did a good job with the routing and we had one good shift by going further south that enabled us to put more than 20 miles on Sodebo and Actual. What was strange was that the French boats went on the south of the Channel and the English boats stayed in the north! Perhaps they are using different routing software!” With so much of their race upwind, Maxi Edmond de Rothschild hadn’t often hit super-high speeds. However, they had briefly reached 40-41 knots after passing Bishop Rock on their return journey. With the wind dropping overnight and forecast to be sub-10 knots by tomorrow morning, it is likely that the next Ultimes, Sodebo Ultim 3 and Actual, are likely to lose further ground on Maxi Edmond de Rothschild. Of their arrival into the Rolex Fastnet Race’s new finish port of Cherbourg, Franck Cammas commented: “It is good because there is a very good ambiance - maybe a little more than when we finish in England! We are very happy to come back in two years.” This edition was Cammas’ fourth Rolex Fastnet Race and he is a fan: “It is a very famous race because it has many boats. It is like the Sydney Hobart - it is not just the professionals, there are many amateur boats too. It is very good to have these all on the same line. It is also very nice to have big multihulls, big monohulls, all the new IMOCAs, etc all on the same start line.” Read more at https://bit.ly/3CBazRN #RolexFastnetRace

It's one of the UK's best loved traditional boat festivals. Held at Henley of the River Thames, the four day event is a wonderful experience for the whole family. For lovers of river boats this is the only place to be. Over the years we've featured a few motor boats on this channel, but this year are aim is to bring you a few more of these stunning craft. As always copyright Bob Aylott, and whatever your passion, steam or wind take a look and please share. This festival is a gold mine of british eccentricity. Share Share Share. Thanks Bob
