Ambitious? yes. Just a little crazy? well maybe you have to be ;) When we first bought Paikea 3 years ago, she was a relic from the past. Along with her missing rudder, ill fitting sails and skin fittings that had not been touched since she was launched, the electrical side was a mess. The electronics were outdated and the only instrument that worked on board was the depth sounder. Still, we knew she was going to require some work to reach her full potential. We spent our entire first season hand steering her through Italy, Croatia and Greece until we could find parts to fix her old autopilot. Since then, we have been slowly working on improving the boat and earning money to fix and upgrade the systems on board. The battery/solar components and upgrading our battery bank along with purchasing reliable working instruments have been our current focus. In this video, we explain why we decided to upgrade a 30 year old boat to 24v and the reasons we have chosen some of the monitoring systems we have. Shayne has been fortunate enough to work on some amazing boats and have taken every opportunity to learn from the best. Now it's time to work out where and how we are going to install our own electronics on Paikea. The last part of our passage to Mexico was a perfect demonstration of what fighting 25 knots in the Gulf Stream on a 36 foot sail boat feels like . . . Choppy seas form when wind goes against current but sometimes it's just a battle out there and there's no way to avoid it. We knew the end of our offshore journey to Mexico could be uncomfortable because of crossing the Gulf Stream and that's exactly what happened. The earlier part of our trip was beautiful though and you'll see that in the first part of this episode. New sail configurations, light breeze and a calm sea state - These are some of our favorites when offshore sailing. As waves grew steeper on the morning of the third day, we got a visit by dolphins. Then conditions began to deteriorate and it was a wet and choppy ride all the way into Mexico. There is nothing like making landfall though and we are hugely rewarded when we finally dock up safe and sound in our new home. Avendo a bordo dei gatti amichevoli spesso succede di trovare uno o più clandestini che hanno sempre molta fame... Lasciamo Astakos satolli ma il wifi non era poi così strepitoso. Ci dirigiamo verso Atokos che è uno dei nostri posti preferiti della zona ad un incontro. Capita molte volte che in base alle nostre passioni facciamo amicizia su fb o instagram e poi ci si ritrova per mare. Pensate che ho traversato l'Atlantico proprio con un amico conosciuto su Instagram e che si trovava nella nosra stessa baia! Passiamo una notte molto bella ma un pò ventosa a causa del vento che si incanale nella valle che poi sfocia in spiaggia a One House Bay. Decidiamo di esplorare un pò l'isola che è un'isola privata. Il rumore delle cicale è assordante, sembra di stare in un anime di Miyazaki Atokos è un'isola di origine vulcanica, il perchè ce lo spiega marina. Se qualcuno ne sa qualcosa in più ce lo scriva nei commenti Lasciamo Atokos a malincuore anche se poi ci ritorneremo. Abbiamo anche ceduto parte della famiglia al nostro Denis Come dicevamo ci troviamo spesso con amici internazionali e così incontriamo anche Wolfgang che è austriaco. L'abbiamo conosciuto mentre vendeva la sua barca... che a quanto pare non ha più voluto vendere! Quando arrivi a Myticas capisci il perchè di questo nome Gentilina oggi ha un bellissimo comandante e pare che di comune accordo con la famiglia abbiamo preso una decisione sul futuro prossimo ma non troppo... E che rovescio! Come tutti gli armatori ben sanno possedere una barca è un onere mica male sia a livello di tempo che economico. Proprio per questo motivo chi vive in barca cerca sempre di fare quanti più lavori in solitaria riesce da veri liveaboard. Ma ci vuole tempo e spesso le parti nuove costano lo stesso molto. Sometimes you need to have a little get away to recharge the mind and open your eyes to new ideas. The Captain celebrated his birthday this weekend 🥳 and I thought what a better birthday adventure then sailing a 40’ Catalina in the ocean. So off to Vancouver, BC we went to celebrate in style. The adventure started with an amazing drive in the Beamer with the sun shining and the wind in our faces. We discovered something very important on that drive. We feel really happy when we have the wind in our faces. So… I guess were pretty good for the boat thing 🤔 Anyway, as the trip went on it was like as strange game of connect the dots. Everything seemed to be pushing us into the same direction. It was so weird and perfect at the same time. From the boats to our evening sail to the perfect Birthday dinner with some long time missed and loved friends. It was all Sea to Sky and we were sailing. ⛵ The highlight of our adventure was to finally get opportunity to feel what it is like to sail a big, beamy, beautiful boat. The folks at Canadian Costal Sailing were the most amazing guides and teachers. They had a way of making sailing easy for any newbie sailor. We have been so lucky to sail the Mediterranean for over a year, but this week it comes to an end. We finish the season in Turkey, a beautiful country which is so often forgotten or misunderstood. We sail the coast on route for Marmaris where we would lift Kawai and winter her until we return from Australia. We begin by sailing from Didim where we collect our papers from our agent to the picturesque town of Akyarla, where we spend a chilled afternoon enjoying a few beers overlooking the pretty town. We enjoy a traditional Turkish meal at a local restaurant and post a new video while eating (using the restaurant wifi). With some strong winds we head for Ciflik, 88nm from Akyarla and zigzag in between many of the Greek Islands we had previously anchored. It's a bittersweet moment, as it's our last sail of the season but a step closer to seeing family and friends back in Australia. Kawai will be spending her time at Marmaris Yacht Marina, so we anchor outside and sort the paper work before preparing the boat for a lift. We bring down the sails and our sailing comes to an end for a while. About us: Our names are Jason and Tracey and we traded our house, cars, business, job and security for freedom, adventure, travel and living simply amongst nature and the seas on our 45 foot Hanse 445 sailing boat, Kawai.
