Scuba diving at the Mexico Rocks dive site. Located of the northern part of Ambergris Caye, Mexico Rocks Marine Reserve is a shallow patch reef of around 8 to 20 feet. The moray eel was very curious... Beautiful shallow dive inside the barrier reef.

In this episode we do some sailing. I'll show my entire process from drawing the parts in CAD, to loading them in CAM and then loading them into the CNC machine and cutting them out. We get to hear some cool stories from my friend who was a professional sailor. Sailboat racing in Europe, Tahiti and all over the world. Long time followers will be amazed that I actually cleaned the boat. I'm making lots of progress and things are really starting to come together. Also a little touch on Bulkheads and safety.

IT'S BAD!! We removed our keel and what we found could result in the end of Project Melody. Melody has a lifting swing keel which goes up inside a box inside the long keel so it is super important to remove that and inspect everything and repair everything. But then we lifted the boat to remove the swing keel we discovered the extent of the rust and corrosion along the underside of the long keel looks pretty awful and is coming off in huge slabs. It is repairable but it's going to be tricky and expensive to fix. Remember we're doing all of this so we can go full time cruising as a sailing family in a few years time. This is obviously a huge refit and refurbishment of this big, old, abandoned steel yacht and it's not only time consuming, it's complicated and quite expensive so we really do value any help we can get, whether it's helpful advice and comments on the video or gifts through our Amazon Wishlist or actual contributions through Patreon, Paypal and Ko-Fi. We did a load pull test on the two Lithium Iron Phosphate (LiFePO4) batteries I bought from Lithium Valley, and they performed better than expected. After 1.3 years I did expect some amount of performance reduction, but none at all. They actually performed better than the specification. I graduated from University of Texas at Austin with a degree in Electrical Engineering. UT Austin is one of the top universities for engineering in the USA. I worked as an electrical engineer for for over 30 years. And, though I am not a power engineer, I understand a little bit about the movement of electrons in a wire. Regarding what I was testing: I showed 2 main things - After the batteries were 16 months old they accepted a charge with low resistance. From 1:10AM until 14:20 or 2:20PM I charged the batteries at about 47 to 60 amps from a discharged state (starting voltage was 23.4V) as shown in the charging spreadsheet. This took 13 hours 10 minutes, and used 16.8KW hours. THUS - I put in 16.8KW Hours into the batteries.... The charging spread sheet is at 16:57 The next spreadsheet I put up was the discharge. I turned on the inverter and the AC unit which pulled between 30 to 42 amps off the batteries. So over a period of 17 hours 25 minutes the batteries were able to power the Inverter and AC unit using a total of 16.3KW hours of energy. So, in this experiment I lost only 500 watt hours of energy. That is simply AMAZING! The Discharge spread sheet is at 17:02 I know that my experiment was not perfect, but even if I was off 5%, these batteries are still Amazing. The batteries that I had for the test were 2 x 300AH at 24V.... This batteries are specified to hold about 600AH x 26volts = 15.6KW hours. So, during the test, I pulled 16.3KW hours out of batteries. These batteries are 16 months old and were specified to hold about 15.6KW hours. 1) The batteries did not use a lot of energy to get the electrical energy into chemical potential energy. (Low resistance to put electrons into the battery) 2) I was able to USE almost 100-(500/16800) = 97% of the energy I put into the batteries. 16800 Total Watts I put into the batteries 16300 Total Watts I pulled out of the batteries 500 is the Watt hours lost (16800 - 16300) These batteries are simply amazing. So, I bought the 3rd battery. Aloha Big Island, Aloha Maui. WE set sail from the Big Island to Maui for an overnight passage across the Alenuihaha Channel, known as one of the most dangerous passages. Luckily for us, we paid close attention to the weather and chose to go at night as the winds typically soften through the gap. On this episode of WE|Sail, we arrive to La Parousse Bay, the south side of Maui and adventure around the next volcanic island. We try to find a mooring at Molokini Crater, and have some difficulties finding a protected anchorage on Maui. We take part of a special Hawaiian Tradition of paddling on a outrigger canoe. Learn a little about the history of the first settlers and how they navigated their way to the island by canoe and sing some traditional chants of the Hawaiian people. Dopo essere entrati nel canale della baia con un gatto Vicky imbracato più per evitare il rollio che per reale necessità, ormeggiamo a Vathy. Proprio a Itaca incontriamo una coppia di gommonauti appena sposati dal Pope, spendiamo "addirittura" 13 euro per l'ormeggio in banchina. Dato che il tempo pare volgere al peggio decidiamo di affittare due motorini e andare a scoprire l'isola... partiamo da Vathy e andiamo verso baia Sarakiniko e subito dopo arriviamo a spiaggia Filiatro. Perdiamo due preziosissimi Euro e dopo un consiglio per l'acqua dopo la disavventura dell'autoclave procediamo. Una rapida puntata a Nord ci porta in vetta fino ad arrivare al paesino di Stavros in cui abbiamo cercato di mangiare ma forse, dato il nostro aspettato non proprio pettinato abbiamo avuto poca fortuna... La mattina dopo dobbiamo consegnare gli scooter ma io e marina decidiamo di spremere l'ultima ora e andiamo a vedre le Cave delle Ninfe anche se sono chiuse al pubblico ma il cancello è aperto... Osserviamo poi la danza del velista/motoscafista/catamarinista Suricato (il Suricato è verosimilmente una specie presente su tutte le imbarcazioni)... che cosa sono i Suricati in barca te lo spiego proprio qui... guarda il video! Nel prossimo episodio torniamo dai porcelli di Atokos, facciamo altri incontri e ci giunge una notizia per la quale cominceremo a salire verso l'Italia! Cosa c'è di meglio di vivere in barca direte voi... beh, quando mi chiedono come faccio a vivere in una barca a vela che paragonata ad una casa di medie dimensioni è grande come una sola stanza rispondo sempre che in realtà io vivo al mare, la barca è il mezzo che mi permette di stare a contatto con la natura! Ma non sono solo rose e fiori, albe e tramonti dorati, pesca alla traina, big catch, dormite sotto le stelle, belle veleggiate e mangiate da re... c'è anche il rovescio della medaglia in barca a vela. E che rovescio! Come tutti gli armatori ben sanno possedere una barca è un onere mica male sia a livello di tempo che economico. Proprio per questo motivo chi vive in barca cerca sempre di fare quanti più lavori in solitaria riesce da veri liveaboard. Ma ci vuole tempo e spesso le parti nuove costano lo stesso molto. A lee-bow is a powerful technique that helps you control boats to windward. It is an important tool if you want to force a boat to tack or prevent being rolled on the upwind. Learning how to perform a good lee-bow takes a good amount of practice and it can help you in many situations after the start. In this video I show you how to perform the lee-bow in light weather.
