Binnen durch den Kontinent - Rhein- Rhonekanal Teil 2 Unser Segelboot Squib, ein Catalac 9M, ist in die Jahre gekommen, die Verkleidung hängt teilweise von der Decke, die Farbe blättert ab, die Elektrik auf dem Stand des vorigen Jahrtausends,..... Ein Refit steht an. Doch Broterwerb und Verpflichtungen lassen es nicht zu, monatelang in Griechenland am Boot zu arbeiten. Da wird schon 2018 die Idee geboren Squib nach Wien zu bringen, wo man jederzeit Zugang hat, der Einkauf von Material in der Muttersprache abgewickelt werden kann und alles andere seinen gewohnten Verlauf nimmt. Bereits 2018 starteten wir Richtung Wien, doch ein Motorschaden in der Straße von Messina zwang uns, den Überstellungstörn abzubrechen. Am vierten September kamen wir in Wien an, 980 Seemeilen und 2120 km über die europäischen Wasserstraßen lagen hinter uns. Seitdem liegt Squib in der Wiener Kuchelau, der Refit hat bereits begonnen. Vom 7.5. - 8.5.2022 fand das Einhandwochenende am Dümmer in Niedersachsen statt. Die Regatta war mit insgesamt über 80 Jollen aus den Klassen Finn Dinghy, Europe und Contender gut besucht. Auch ich war mit meinem Finn dabei. Am Samstag fand aufgrund fehlenden Winds keine Wettfahrt statt. Am Sonntag dann zumindest eine gesegelt. In der wurde ich entgegen aller meiner Vorsätze und Ziele letzter! Peinlich peinlich ... Aber: es war meine erste Wettfahrt, ich sehe es als Test und beim nächsten mal wird es besser.

Join us sailing through the straits of Gibraltar! In this video as sail past Barbate, through what’s been nicknamed by sailors “Orca Alley” due to interactions between killer whales and sailboats where boats have had their rudders bitten disabling their yachts. Join us from Cadiz to Gibraltar as we aim to complete the most risky part of our journey to reach the rock of Gibraltar! We get up before dawn to be able to complete the passage in daylight ours and sail nervously past a customs boat as we have already stamped out of Portugal and are “in transit”. We deal with an issue with the main sail, pass the site of the Battle of Trafalgar, and then are initially thrilled to see a swordfish jumping out of the water before quickly remembering a friend telling us if they’re jumping they’re probably being chased by an Orca!! The wind was not great when we sailed on 2 June 22 and we decided to abandon sailing at lunch time. "Fancy a sail tomorrow? The wind looks to be better." Fro Dave its a 50 Mile round trip - would it be worthwhile just a half day sail? John Cranwell Ward and Dave Grundy met up about 09:30 and 45 minutes later had launched and rigged and were leaving the pontoon in a decent breeze. We set of down the South leg and were pleased to see Rutland Sailing Club new RS21's out giving folks a taster sail. They looked great and even managed to get their spinnakers up a couple of times. Soon more boats appeared and we enjoyed. Our Squibs are 50+ years old but they still give us an exciting sail, given a decent breeze - the sun was out, the breeze ideal and lifting. Did a little dirty work on Sailing Intermission. Cleaned the Electroscan inside and out. The unit is about 6 years old and it looks pretty good. The electrodes are still in good shape. Spent some time at the beach. We're still stuck in a marina awaiting US Coast Guard documentation. Think we're getting close, perhaps within a month. Still planning where Isabella takes us next. Now there is a big concern about hurricane season. Steve and I plan to move to a another environment. In this video we demonstrate how to douse an asymmetric spinnaker with a leeward takedown on our F-82R trimaran. This technique can be used on both monohulls and multihulls. We'll douse onto the leeward net, and in a monohull you'd normally douse into the companionway. First attach the bag to the nets or toe rail so it doesn’t blow away. Then grab the lazy sheet to get a hold of the clew. Easing the tack will depower the sail. Gather the foot into a tube blanketed behind the mail sail so it doesn’t re-fill Once the sail is down you can pack it back into the box bag in the exact same way it came out, with the tack at the front, the clew at the back and the head in the middle. Normally we would raise another headsail before dousing but didn’t here to make it easier to see in the video. The conditions are pretty calm here, but we use this approach most of the time on this trimaran, even in higher winds. The beauty of the box bag is you can leave it all hooked up and ready for the next launch. If you want a completely bomb-proof approach you can pull the foot under the main sail, over the boom, and into the companionway in what is called a letterbox douse. We used the letterbox douse quite frequently on my last monohull in moderate to heavy conditions. As last time we had to perform some "acrobatics" with Aquarius trying to set up ourselves for easier crossing back to Tanga from Pemba - it paid off! After getting our anchor up, which wasn't fully cooperating with us on early departure we took off for the passage - which is not particular long, but 3knts currents and 20+kts winds from south insisted on altering our course, but it actually was a really nice and enjoyable sale. As we got back to Tanga - all excited for upcoming trip to South Africa with our friends we got some mixed news - Zivile needs visa (and doesn't have one)! So we haphazardly decide to go to town and get tickets to tomorrow bus going to Dar Es Salaam and visit South Africa Embassy ASAP... And... there was a soccer game that we decided to check out and was not disappointed! Join us!
