Leaving Exmouth we round the Harold Holt Naval Communication Station and the Navy Pier that we dived in the previous episode. We sail down the coast stopping at Yardie Creek where Chris goes up Laylah's mast in 20-30 knots winds and a bumpy sea to fix a couple broken halyards which got caught when furling the headsail. ALL OF THIS was also very very kindly funded by Auckland Maritime Foundation. Another great team building time onshore at Motuihe Island with the students on both days. With swimming, kayaking, paddles, salt and sand. This time we had a fantastic sail in the afternoon down to Ponui Island, Shark Bay. We anchored and had dinner watching the stunning sunset over the city in the distance. Next morning we motored sailed back to Motuihe Island for more swimming, kayaking and team building games! It was a wonderful trip with great students, building characters to believe they can reach for stars. Thankyou. NZ Sailing Trust Crew

What a delight to have 17 young ladies join us on Lion NZ in Opua on 09 May. Bluelight Northland were onboard for this next sailing adventure. To make new friendships and push their boundaries. We had three very fun competitive teams with all the onboard and offshore activities. We sailed around the Bay of Islands to different anchorage’s. Hiking, kayaking, swimming, yahooing! Sailed out to the Hole in the Rock at Cape Brett and tacked and tacked back to Oki bay for more games on shore. The three teams had to make a model each out of sand of Lion NZ. So impressive. One team even had the running back stays another the NZ ensign (flag). Lots of lasting memories and friendships. The crew and I are really looking forward to our next Bluelight trip from Northland.

On 03rd May, we welcomed 24 Kerikeri High School students and teachers onboard Lion NZ. The memories overall of this fun loving group was their love of dancing to the music and their competitive spirit. There were three teams fiercely trying to outdo each other in all the activities onboard and ashore. All our sailing was around the Bay Of Islands discovering new places to explore and a safe haven to sleep. We loved our time with everyone and really look forward to having Kerikeri High back onboard again.

On 28th April, 22 Bay of Islands College students and teachers joined the good ship Lion NZ at the Opua Marina, in The Bay of Islands. We sailed out around Ninepin Island and into Deep Water Cove. Snorkeling, hiking, kayaking, swimming. Down wind sail to the Cavalli Islands the following day where we fished had games on shore, football, volleyball. Also a raft build and race. We anchored the night in the magnificent Whangaroa Harbour. Next morning we took a breakfast cruise around the Harbour before we battened the hatches and took a big dig out into the easterly wind and swell. Lion was in her absolute element, purring like a little cub. Tacked over and sailed back to join the good ship R Tucker Thompson in Paradise Bay, Urupukapuka Island. The skipper Terry and crew had kindly invited us onboard for a pot luck dinner. After hiking and team bonding exercises on shore we joined the students and crew on R Tucker Thompson for dinner at 18.30. There were 44 POB. What a brilliant night of shared food, guitars, ukulele and singing. After dinner Terry the skipper invited all of us up on deck to see the stars! As I stepped up on deck, tremendously strong voices from my BOI student’s haka hit me!! Holy heck!! Birthday cake, candles, birthday song and the most beautifully stunning Waiata. I was gob smacked! How dumb was I? I never picked up on any of this. I ended up with very leaky eyes! So unexpected, stunning and magnificently beautiful. Thankyou Thankyou. I will never forget this. Ever! The following day we swapped the students from off our around the world race yacht to R. Tucker Thompson, the gaff rig, top sail schooner and went for a such a fun sail alongside each other. What an awesome experience for these students sailing on two very different boats. After a couple of hours of sailing together we anchored at Roberton Island for swimming, kayaking, hiking. Lunch consisting of sashimi, from all the fish caught on board, was served on our return sail to Opua Marina. We thoroughly enjoyed our time with the fun loving, high energy and very tuneful students from the Bay of Islands College.

This destination and fun-packed episode episode sees us sail into Golfo de Nicoya, where we find our calmest anchorage yet, as well as a spectacular jungle eco resort, before finishing in the magnificent Islas Tortugas! In deze video zie je onze tijd in Mindelo op de Kaapverden. Bryan en Ryan geven een optreden, ik neem deel aan een Salsa workshop en overal waar we komen in restaurants en bars wordt muziek gemaakt. We maken ook een wandeling naar het onbereikbare fort op de berg achter Mindelo en we maken een zware hike door een vulkaankrater op Santo Antão, een nabij gelegen eilandje. Dan doen we boodschappen en bereiden we ons voor op het vertrek naar Frans Guyana. Het is jammer om van alle vrienden afscheid te moeten nemen, maar we weten dat we de meeste later aan de overkant weer zullen treffen. Jarenlang heb ik ervan gedroomd om zeilend te gaan waar de wind me brengt. In 2020 was het dan eindelijk zover en heb ik samen met Felia een prachtige reis gemaakt naar Scandinavië en de Baltische staten. Onze Eva, een Atlantic 43 uit 2007, is een aluminium zeiljacht met hefkiel en gebouwd en uitgerust voor reizen naar plaatsen die net achter de horizon liggen. Vanaf 2021 vaar ik met wisselende bemanning zuidwaarts. Ik vind het leuk om onze avonturen met jullie te delen. In this video, we have a quick tour of La Gomera, meal prep and get ready for our passage to Cape Verde. We had 750nm to sail - and the wind was going to be quite strong. We left on Good Friday on a favourable tide through the Needles and across Poole Bay passed St Alban’s head and went straight into Portland Marina where the helpful staff had kept a great berth for us and resident dolphin “Danny” entertained the marina guests. Absolute dead calm on Saturday with over 20°C so we decided to go for a walk along the west side of Portland Bill. We had a good view on the inshore passage around the notorious Bill. We even observed a few yachts passing this alternative route which avoids the long detour outside the Shambles and Portland Race. So that’s sorted for next time… We also learned a few things about the habits of living on the Bill: according to common knowledge speaking out the word “Rabbit” shall bring certain misfortune… apparently, this myth comes from the time when the Portland quarries were thriving and rabbit tunnels led to uncontrolled collapsing boulders putting workers at danger of life. On Sunday the wind freshened up a tiny bit so that we could start our way back to Studland Bay. We were accompanied by another dolphin for much of the way. We set anchor behind Old Harry and Old Harry’s Wife rocks and spent a peaceful evening and an uneventful night. Everything was perfect. The weather forecast, the planning, the start at 04:00 from Haslar Marina in darkness. We successfully negotiated our way along the planned route with our pilotage plan out of the marina, out of Portsmouth harbour. We successfully avoided being run down by 3 cruise liners in their final miles into Southampton and did not catch one single lobster pot off Bembridge and we were at Bembridge Cardinal on time as planned at 05:00. An enjoyable sunrise and just when we started to relax things turned sour. The wind veered from east to south (as forecast) and we had it on our nose. So on went the engine and the trouble started. To cut a long story short, under the impression that we had a performance problem with our engine we decided to return through the Needles to have this fixed. Only to find out the next day, after a night in East Cowes Marina, and after having joined SeaStart (the RAC on water), which included the attendance of engineer Matt, that the apparent performance issue of our engine was caused by an algae which grew in front of the paddle wheel of our water speed log with the result that the latter constantly under-read our speed through the water, suggesting a performance issue with the engine. A video covering the 2022 DF65 (Dragon Force) and DF95 (DragonFlite) Traveller Trophy event held at Weecher Reservoir on 28th & 29th May 2022. This event is part of a series of Model Yacht Racing events for DF65 & DF95 classes held once a month at various locations across the UK during 2022. Weecher reservoir is set high up in the Pennines in Northern England about 15 miles North East of the City of Leeds. It is approximately 250 metres above sea level it is known as a venue for strong winds and cool conditions as well as stunning views over the valleys below The DF65s raced on Saturday and DF95s on the Sunday. There was a healthy turnout of 33 DF65s and 39 DF95s on Sunday. The 2022 DF95 TT events will count towards qualification for the Global Regatta at Fleetwood in 2023 so this has boosted turnouts for these events. Radio Sailing (Model yacht racing) is a competitive form of yacht racing run along similar lines to dinghy racing and keelboat racing.

Congratulations to Westlake Boys High School Red and skipper Lucas Day for taking home Westlake’s 3rd National Keelboat title in four years, and to King's College and skipper Sam Scott for taking out the Silver Fleet on Finals day. This event has gone from strength to strength, with a full 20 boat fleet this year - and each and every sailor had a great time learning new skills aboard the Elliott 7s, creating connections with their fellow sailors, and enjoying a few beautiful days on the Waitemata Harbour.
