Sailing Adventures with Grandad This Channel , SAILING ADVENTURES WITH GRANDAD , is about a sailing adventure on Vayu my 44 ft sloop leaving Palma de Mallorca and sailing to the Eastern Mediterranean. Our first stop is Palermo, Sicily. I am Grandad Michael, 73, lifetime sailor, wannabe creator for YouTube, retired businessman, practicing yogi, father of 4, grandad of 5, amateur chef, and contented bachelor. I live in Palma de Mallorca, Spain. My sailboat is Vayu, in Sanskrit (remember Im a practicing Yogi) the name stands for wind or life force. Vayu is a 44 ft X-Yacht (X-442) sloop, born 2002 in Denmark. The journey is a celebration of life and how how baring poor health or some other personal misfortune, one can, at any age, live with enthusiasm, curiosity, perspective and a sense of humor. Its also about a novice creators attempt at sharing this journey on YouTube. So this is not a lone journey but one I want to share with friends, family and all who care to join me on Vayu or through YouTube. In the hope that millions of us with even small contributions can help ease the suffering of the many displaced Ukrainian families I make contributions to Save the Children-Ukrain and dedicate this adventure to Sailing for Peace. This Episode is about the initiation of my grandson Ixmael (Ixi) who is 10 years old to offshore passage making and our voyage from Palma de Mallorca to Palermo. We were joined as crew by Ixi's dad, my son Peter and our good friend Javier (Javi). On this passage we fished and lost a big one, we had a beautiful sail for most of the way and only had to motor sail for short periods. We swam in the beautiful blue Mediterranean 150 miles from Palermo. We had great cooking on board and Ixi was initiated into the Royal Order of the Worms. The Royal Order of the Worms has its origin in the fact that I think my grandchildren are often like a bunch of worms wriggling around, for no apparent purpose, and making unintelligible noises. In turn they have nominated me King Worm. Having accepted this nomination that now has me as king it has become a Royal Order and on this voyage Ixi and his behavior fully qualified him as a member. #Sailing Adventures with Grandad

Die Nachteile eines Festrumpfkatamarans stehen in keinem Verhältnis zu den Vorteilen eines Schlauchkatamarans. Natürlich gibt es Profis die mit Festrumpfkatamaranen enorme Geschwindigkeiten erreichen. Vor diesen Leuten habe ich höchsten Respekt für Ihre Leistung. It was always an ambitious plan - A race for some of the world's top solo sailors that would take them and their advanced IMOCA60 offshore monohulls from the port of Les Sables d'Olonne on the west coast of France, around Iceland and back. A race course that would be strewn with challenges with risk. And a race course that had never been tried before. But this was also a race with a twist, a race that would be an important qualifier for some of those looking to enter the non stop solo race around the world in 2024, the Vendee Globe Race. It takes a long time to build a quality composite structure…not least because of the time it takes to get the air out of the laminate, or debulk is its known. Then, there’s the time spent in the autoclave. But composites experts Hexcel have developed a new range of pre-pregs that avoid this and save huge amounts of time.

Finnish H-323 Silver Moon II, skippered by Salla Kaven has won the Roschier Baltic Sea Race having scored the best time after IRC correction for the new race organised by the Royal Ocean Racing Club in association with the Offshore Racing Alliance. The Kaven family have raced the 9.9 metre sloop designed by Hans Groop since they were children on Lake Päijänne in Southern Finland. All of the team are born and bred in Finland and a completely amateur crew. Salla is a class teacher, and her sister-in-law Heidi is a nurse. Salla’s brothers Jorma and Jouni are an engineer and a paramedic respectively, and Karl, Salla’s husband is a firefighter. The Kaven family sailed from a very young age with their parents who bought Silver Moon II in 1985. Salla became the skipper in 2012. The team fully admit that they sometimes argue when racing on Lake Päijänne, where they grew up, but the arguments stopped offshore! There were tears of joy from Silver Moon II Skipper Salla Kaven as a huge crowd cheered the team to the dock: “I am speechless, just so happy, we never thought we could win this race,” commented Salla, a teacher in Helsinki. “It was great sailing and everything went well, but even when we crossed the line, I didn’t believe it.” – but the message to all the amateur sailors out there from Salla is: “You can do it if you want to; do what you love.” #RoschierBalticSeaRace #RORCracing
