Why did we sell our house and the security of life on land for a sailboat? With no experience whatsoever of sailing, or living on a boat, we took a huge gamble in order to escape the normalities of life and do something a little crazy. We bought a boat! So, we seriously considered all of our options. We had Ellie (our dog) at the time, so whatever it was we were going to do, she had to be there with us! So, it left us with 2 options. Could we buy a campervan, or by a van and convert it into something we could live in full time? We decided a camper wasn't the best solution for us. So that left us with one option. A boat. So we sold our house, bought a boat, and learnt to sail. Sounds simple. But it's been a CRAZY journey of learning a lot, stressing out a lot, and being thrown into so many circumstances that would terrify you 2 years ago! And, through all the struggles, it has been the best decision of our lives. Now. We just need to figure out how we can can make some money so we can stay out here....any ideas? The basilica of Santa Luzia is situated on a mountain in the city of Viana do Castelo, at the northwestcoast of Portugal. The building work on this basilica dedicated to Santa Luzia and the Sacred Heart of Jesus, started in 1904 and lasted until 1959. It is the work of architect Miguel Ventura Terra, who was succeeded by Miguel Nogueira, after the death of his master in 1919. You can reach the top of the Monte de Santa Luzia by funicular (elevator), by car or by climbing the steps. This place dominates an important part of the Lima river valley and a large stretch of the seashore to the north and south of the estuary, as well as the green mountain range. This panorama has been rated by the National Geographic Magazine as the third most beautiful in the World.

After weeks in the canals we make the decision to head out to sea and continue south along the Dutch coast. We are really hyped about getting some proper sailing done for a day before heading back into the last part of the Standing Mast Route. We reach a big goal of our trip as we enter Stellendam, a place we have visited before by car and dreamt about going by our own boat. We "race" (all sailing is a race, right??) against another boat, that turn out to be the first Swedes we hang out with on the trip. This episode is the continue of last weeks trip to Amsterdam. Met de Kustzeilers Horizon zomertocht bereiden we twee routes voor. Een naar Cherbourg in Frankrijk en een naar Thyboron in Denemarken. Vanaf IJmuiden zijn beide routes 300 mijl. Het idee is dat we in 1x naar de gekozen bestemming gaan, zodat we daarmee ons vaargebied verruimen en tijd hebben om ter plaatse nog veel te bezien en bezeilen. Op het laatst kijken we naar de wind en dan bepalen we waar we heengaan. We kiezen ervoor om naar Cherbourg te gaan. Reefing Mochyn Du's mainsail is proving to be difficult. Since I took all my measurements i've found a few resources and spoken to a few people who have told me that I have measured the sail up incorrectly. Add to this I tihnk my cheap sewing machine is simply not up to the job. Despite tryingfor hours, I can't get it to sew a zig zag sticth properly and have since found a fair few people with the same issue with this model of sewing machine. So, this video shows that and how I went about deciding the correct measurements and I have decided to post this in the spirit of the channels core values; of showing all the mistakes and the process of doing things, not just the successful bits!! We had the most incredible weather during our summer holiday. Sailing from Scheveningen to Belgium - Oostende took us around 11 hours. We stayed there for a couple of days and continued to France - Dunkerque. Catching some fresh mackerel on the way for our next meal and meeting other sailors with the same goals is so inspiring and listening to their adventures in de Mediterranean makes us so excited! We continued our journey to Boulogne-Sur-Mer. Experiencing the strong currents and sailing with the wind doing over 10 knots was truly awesome! Unfortunately we only had to weeks of holiday.. And we had to sail back home.
