In this week of our boat life we show you how an off grid lifestyle allows us to explore beautiful beaches by simply anchoring our home in a different place every day. But it doesn't come that easy. On a sailboat on the ocean, everything breaks! In this sailing episode we anchor in the Blue Lagoon of Malta but soon realize there is a better place near by that holds a hidden beach! So we decide to move our sailboat there. But because there is not much room, we drop our stern anchor to keep us away from rocks and other sailboats - oh, and btw we drown our GoPro. 😭 You might be wondering, if this is a lot of work, but for us it's part of our lifestyle and our daily routine. And by now it feels almost as easy as parking your car. :D

We cruised our classic wooden sailboat Julia to many spectacular anchorages on Nuku Hiva and Hiva Oa. This is south pacific sailing as we have always dreamed it would be. The spectacular green scenery of the Marquesas has overwhelmed us with soaring cliffs, beautiful beaches, and swaying palm trees. Julia is an Ingrid Ketch, designed by William Atkin and built in 1960. She is a traditionally built wooden boat, fir planking on oak frames. Our dinghy is skin on frame, designed by Dave Gentry. Our first stop was to see the progress of Distant Shores IV - with future owners being Paul and Sheryl Shard. We see the progress of their Orion 49 thus far, and hear from Paul not only the reason they have chosen this boat, but how it is all coming together. Next we make a stop at neighboring KM Yachtbuilders. A name that has been very familiar in our 'boat-hold' for the last 10 years, as they produce Matt's favorite monohull on earth - the Bestevear. In our tour, we're able to see every stage of their builds - from framing, to interiors, to the finished product. We had such a blast doing this tour - not only because we're in the middle of a boat build ourselves, but because six years ago we were in the middle of an aluminum boat rebuild. Today is the day! We are finally ready to leave from Gran Canaria toward Martinique in the Caribbean. We have new crew aboard and really happy to cross the Atlantic Ocean by sailboat with our friends. ########################################## We are a family of 3, Lithuanian and French couple currently living in Dubai UAE with our daughter born in 2020, with the dream of circumnavigating the globe with a catamaran sailing boat. In 2018 until we decided to focus on our project sailing TELLUS (Latin word meaning “Earth”). We had the chance to visit and live in many beautiful countries including China, Hongkong, Thailand, Romania, Lithuania and France with our previous jobs, that made us realize how fast the world is changing and how fast the life is going and there is no “later” than “now” for the project we have in mind. In early 2019 we took a one-week sailing courses that opened our eyes of new ways of travelling and changed our life style. In June 2020, we decided to sell everything we own, house, car and lot of stuff that we do not need anymore so that we can buy a sailboat and go for an undetermined voyage around the globe. After a light start, conditions were optimum off Muscat’s Al Mouj Marina for day two of the 44Cup Oman, the fifth and concluding event of the 2022 44Cup. Three races were again held, but today the northerly wind peaking at 15 knots, enough to get the nimble RC44 one designs planing on the downwind legs. Meanwhile as temperatures elsewhere in the northern hemisphere plummet below freezing, so the air temperature today in Oman remained in the high 20s°C. The only small downside to the otherwise outstanding conditions was the lumpy sea state.

Als wir vor unserer Reise zu diesem Thema recherchierten waren die Ergebnisse unbefriedigend. Ein Thema wird bewusst ausgeklammert, welche Scheine und Zulassungen werden benötigt, den das variiert von Land zu Land. Hier sollte sich man an die Schifffahrtsbehörden im eigenen Land wenden, um die richtige Antwort zu bekommen. Als Österreicher habe ich vor der Reise extra das "Schiffsführerpatent 10m für Seen, Flüsse und Wasserstraßen bis 10m", umgangssprachlich auch "Donaupatent" genannt erworben. Dazu hatte ich auch unser nationales UKW Funkzeugnis und die erforderliche Betriebslizenz. Unser Schiff Squib hat den österreichischen Seebrief, erst nach unserer Reise habe ich erfahren, dass auch noch eine Binnenzulassung nötig gewesen wäre. Auf beiden Reisen wurde ich kein einziges Mal danach gefragt, anders hätte es sicher ausgesehen wäre es zu einem Unfall gekommen.
