In this video ... We had never sailed a boat before buying ‘UJUD,’ and the concept of moving it from one spot to another was as mysterious as the Bermuda Triangle. So, with our nautical naivety in tow, our neighbour, a seasoned sailor with years of experience, took it upon himself to be our guiding star. On a bright and early morning, we embarked on our very first lesson – anchoring. The Annapolis Sailboat Show is the place to be in October. Once again, I returned for the 24th time with Toni to see and to be seen. We checked out a beautiful Seawind 1160 that had the forward cushions and the flexiteek options installed and confirmed our final decisions with these options. We explored the Vision 444, reminisced on the DragonFly 32 Trimaran, and wandered onboard the Neel 43 Trimaran. I ogled the Yanmar 3YM30AE much to Toni’s dismay and touched every exhibit that piqued our interest. We met some “No Agenda” fans and started to look at ideas for equipping our boat when it arrives, hopefully in early 2024. We looked at the EVA foam decking but we are not sold on it, however we included a link below because there was quite a buzz about it on the various boats. Our future yacht today is a brand-new design drawn from the founder’s deep experience in the marine industry, combined with an exciting Italian design house. She is being built in Dubai and will be a full aluminum hull. The Portofino 47! I had never heard of Portofino Catamarans until John, from the Barefoot Doctors, mentioned the yard in a comment. He said, “... we have found a new design that can be personalised in Dubai - Portofino is the brand and they have a 48, 52, and 67 but are open for any variations as each boat is built to your specs.... They will give us centreboards that kick up you you hit the bottom, lifting rudders (so can be beached), draft of only 2 feet, water collection system, Lithium and 10KW DC chargers able to run the AC without engines on for 8-12 hours and recharge in one hour of engine time (no generator), transom entry to hulls, dedicated engine rooms and many other innovations. They are priced below Garcia but above Leopards. They are based in Dubai using Italian designers and builders and they have a female naval engineer on their staff - Martina who is lovely as we met her and the owner Rafaelle when we were in Dubai...” So, I went looking for Portofino on the web with little luck initially. This is because they are not called Portofino Yachts or Catamarans, but Portofino Marine Services. It turns out that the layout of this 47 was design for a customer of Portofino Marine Services who wanted upgrade from a Lagoon after 8 years of living on board. Rafaelle and his team at Portofino Marine Services, had customized and serviced his Lagoon during the eight years of ownership and together they designed the layout and systems onboard based his 8 years’ experience and Rafaelle’s 40 years in the marine industry as Capt., surveyor, and service manager. Satura Studio (www.saturastudio.it ) is the Italian team of architects (Francesco Viola, Alberto Frulla and the female touch by Federica Fino) who designed the boat with Rafaelle’s support and the structural calculation by naval engineer Emilio D’Onofrio. The goal was to design and build an aluminium boat based on Rafaelle’s experience of 30 years on the sea and 15 in the yacht services field, in order to produce custom made boats with everything needed for safe and comfortable long passages.

Visite de l'île de Sao Antao, juste magnifique. Aujourd'hui nous visitons l'île de Sao Antao. Pour profiter au mieux de cette journée, nous avons fait appel à un guide. Sao Antao est l'île la plus verte du Cap Vert. Essentiellement agricole, c'est le lieu de production de la quasi totalité des fruits et légumes que l'on trouve sur les autres îles de l'archipel. La beauté du lieu réside dans le fait que ces cultures se dispatchent en centaines de petites parcelles en terrasse au sein d'un cratère. The reality hit deep with our brief for the crew and I, from Head Office England for this Ocean of Hope Challenge! ‘They feel that when they enter a room, the lights dim’! Put yourself into that space!! Think about that!! What a challenging, incredible adventure of many nautical miles of sunshine, wind, rain, thunder, lightening and RAIN we finally arrived into Opua Marina. I absolutely believe, their belief in themselves shone so bright, that no room lights would dare to dim!! Steinlager 2 crew salute you ALL. We look forward to our next adventure!

We are so privileged that 23 Multiple Sclerosis crew have come on an incredible, challenging adventure with us on Steinlager 2. Destination Opua Marina, Bay of Islands. ETA 1600 Friday 2nd Dec. We departed the Viaduct on Monday with crew from all around the world; NZ, Aussie, UK and Turkey. Hoisted sails to Kawau Island, with great spirits all around. Wicked off wind sailing and great weather made for a fantastic first day. Tuesday we departed for Smokehouse Bay, Great Barrier Island. 30nm sail, with the MS crew on the grinders, running back stays navigating and helming. BBQ dinner on the shore at Smokehouse was the perfect way to end the day ( even roasted marshmallows). Today, we have anchored at Tutakaka. It was a challenging long sail, with all four seasons. Rain, thunder, lighting, wind changes and everyone managed to keep high spirits. It was a great day overall, with everyone overcoming challenges and proving that ANYTHING is possible.
