Ce mois-ci, on passe aux choses sérieuses: JADE A RENDEZ-VOUS! Un abonné de notre chaîne Youtube (comme quoi, ça sert à tout) nous a mis en lien avec une petite famille qui passe le canal de Panama dans le sens Pacifique-Atlantique. Il leur manque deux handliners... niveau dates et météo, ça peut coller! On avance notre départ de Santa Marta de quelques jours et c'est parti pour Shelter Bay, la marina la plus proche du canal. Mais la Colombie n'a pas dit son dernier mot: en guise d'aurevoir, elle nous gratifie des vents soutenus qui descendent de la Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, et des eaux brunes du río Magdalena, le plus grand fleuve du pays... Trois jours (houleux) plus tard, c'est l'arrivée dans la baie de Colón au milieu de centaines de navires cargo. À peine le temps de faire notre entrée officielle au Panama, et la première porte d'écluse s'ouvre dans le petit jour... This episode opens with Calico Skies underway, motor sailing of the Baja California Peninsula’s eastern shores, in the Sea of Cortez located on Mexico’s western coast. We left a little fishing village are set out for a spot called Los Gatos, which is famous for its beautiful red rock formations. While underway, Bill climbs the mast when our friends on sv One Life let us know they've spotted whales! They're just ahead of so I (Grace) race to the bow with my binoculars. 65ft up Bill has a better view and spots several spouts in the distance. On this short journey we manage to catch three mahi mahi with our yoyo but throw all back for being undersized. We're only going a few hours and that's a lot of fish! It's a super hot sail, although short, and after some time we're really overheating. Its early fall and temperatures are soaring in the desert. We decide to take a dip off of Calico Skies, cut the engine and go for a swim in 400 feet of the clearest water. Once at our anchorage we set the hook, which takes a bit and then we're back in the water again. It's 93 in the cabin, a record for us so it's time for another dip. Afterwards we enjoy some cold beverages in the cockpit and admire our stunning surroundings: Bright and deep red rock, countered with pinky beige boulders across the harbor. The next day we are - shocker - back in the water again, both to cool down and also to explore our new spot. Bill and I head out in the dinghy and are pleasantly surprised to find a ton of fish, many the good eating kind, like Grouper. Bill manages to spear three Groupers and I find an octopus wedged deep in a rock, hiding. Later we're back on Calico and it's 93 degrees AGAIN. We pop on the a/c and prep dinner which is our fresh catch and a side of hash browns using the potatoes and onions we picked up in San Evaristo, the fishing village from the previous harbor. À l’ancre à Linton Bay depuis 1 semaine, un petit coup de vent fait décrocher plusieurs bateaux autour de nous, dont un Catana qui était ancré devant nous. Son ancre n’est plus accrochée dans le fond et il dérape dans le mouillage. Au lieu de lever son ancre et se re ancrer, il laisse son ancre trainer dans le fond pendant qu’il se déplace dans le mouillage. Ce qui devait arriver arriva, il s’emmêle avec la chaîne de l’ancre d’un petit voilier à côté de nous. Wir hätten hier bestimmt noch eine Weile verbringen können, allerdings haben wir bereits Heimflüge in Panama gebucht und wollten mit ein bisschen Vorlauf unser Boot in die Marina in Linton Bay bringen. Wir wussten schon dass diese Passage zwischen Kolumbien und Panama nicht einfach wird und haben uns mental darauf eingestellt. Insgesamt hatten wir die meiste Zeit circa 25 Kn Wind und durch die vielen konfusen Strömungen entstand oft eine raue ungleichmäßige See. Einige Wellen schafften es sogar ins Cockpit. Nichtsdestotrotz sind wir sicher angekommen und einmal mehr hat sich unsere Manatee bewährt.

We are Kathrin and Daniel. We sail, cruise and live aboard our sailing yacht SV Polaris Helvetica, a 14m Bavaria Cruiser 46 from 2017. We left our native Switzerland and moved to the UK almost two decades ago. In 2021, in our mid 50-ies, after our three boys left the nest we made a big decision. We left the rat race in London behind and made our beloved sailboat our primary floating home. Over the years we have added a few things to Polaris. We got rid of the standard propane gas cooker and replaced it with an electric cooker and oven. We fitted a generator and changed to a lithium (LiFePo) house battery bank. We added a 1'200W solar arch and a water maker. With all these upgrades Polaris is now a comfortable live aboard yacht. We sail her along Britain's beautiful coastline and we live on her summer and winter. Kathrin loves cooking and baking on board. You will see some of her cookery wonders across our episodes. We completely fell in love with our new lifestyle although we had to make some tough decisions. We vacated our rented house in London and sold or gave away all our belongings that had no space on Polaris. What a very liberating feeling to be able to say that all we own is with us on our small sailing boat. There's nothing else to care about. We enjoy our new freedom. We explore new places, discover their history and we love making new friends along our way.
