Wir bauen die Frontfenster aus und beginnen mit dem neu eindichten Unser Segelboot Squib, ein Catalac 9M, ist in die Jahre gekommen, die Verkleidung hängt teilweise von der Decke, die Farbe blättert ab, die Elektrik auf dem Stand des vorigen Jahrtausends,..... Ein Refit steht an. Doch Broterwerb und Verpflichtungen lassen es nicht zu, monatelang in Griechenland am Boot zu arbeiten. Da wird schon 2018 die Idee geboren Squib nach Wien zu bringen, wo man jederzeit Zugang hat, der Einkauf von Material in der Muttersprache abgewickelt werden kann und alles andere seinen gewohnten Verlauf nimmt. 2021 war es dann endlich soweit, mit zwei generalüberholten Motoren und einem neuen Geräteträger starteten wir Anfang Juli Richtung Südfrankreich.Leider hatten wir für die gesamte Reise nur zwei Monate Zeit, deswegen hieß es die meiste Zeit Strecke machen. Doch manchmal nahmen wir uns die Zeit zu verweilen, uns Orte näher anzuschauen. The reason for hiding out in Hatchet Bay was to have a safe and comfortable harbor for the windstorm that was predicted. Inside the bay was calm, but of course, QP wanted to go back out to snorkel where we found the cave the day before the storm. I took her out, which only lasted a few minutes. The wind and waves were much stronger and bigger than inside the bay! OK then let's just explore around the bay. The next day, we hiked to Sweeting's Pond with Mike Pierce and the crew of SV Magic, so QP could find some seahorses. This was her first time to see them in nature! We saw several Seahorses, but the wind made the water cloudy, and, in the waves, I couldn't hold the GoPro steady. See the videos. After 4 miles of hiking and an hour of snorkeling, we stopped at Emett's for a cheeseburger and made plans for a Chinese meal on Freya in the evening. We planned on leaving for the Glass Window early the next morning. Hope to see you there!

Souvent Les premières réactions quand on annonce que l’on va partir en voyage sont de l’ordre de « et les enfants, vous n’avez pas peur qu’ils s’ennuient, c’est votre rêve pas le leur, ils vont subir, vous êtes égoïstes, ils n’auront plus de relations sociales… et comment allez vous faire pour l’école?… ». Souvent, ces commentaires viennent cristalliser des peurs non fondées. D’une part, tous les enfants subissent les choix de leurs parents, et ce n’est pas parce que nous avons choisi un mode de vie alternatif que les enfants sont plus pénalisés que les autres. Pour nous, c’est d’ailleurs plutôt tout le contraire. On considère que c’est une chance qu’on leur offre et une ouverture qu’ils n’auraient pas l’occasion d’avoir en restant dans un système plus classique. Notre mode de vie les responsabilisent, les rend plus autonomes, développe leur confiance en eux. Ils apprennent aussi à observer, à trouver des solutions à toutes sortes de problèmes. Nous sommes convaincus que ce style de vie nomade les prépare mieux pour l’avenir qu’une éducation classique. Maintenant, y a t’il un meilleur moment pour partir que d’autres pour les enfants? Entre enfants et ados, est ce que ça fait une différence? Nous avons interrogé quelques ados que nous avons croisés au cours du voyage pour recueillir leur point de vue. Meanwhile, wildlife are captured (photographically speaking) grazing in the garden. This is the story of the building of a Jay Benford designed, 31.8ft, junk schooner-rigged cruising sailboat. It's always a bad feeling when you turn the key to start the engine and nothing happens, but this kind of things occurs when you buy a boat that was built in 1978. The starter battery, which served its purpose to get us well out of range of a convenient replacement, has now decided it's time to die. When we first met Mike, the goal for him and his wife was to sail from Lake Champlain in Vermont to the Bahamas. In each episode, we have followed their progress. In EP-72, Mike shared with us the casting off of the lines in Burlington VT, and heading South via the Champlain canal to the Hudson River. After a delightful few days at Keswick island off Mackay, we push further north. We still can’t use our mainsail due to the sheet bracket on the boom we broke earlier on the trip north, but we still find ourselves sailing along so nicely with just headsail and mizzen we cruise on by our intended anchorage at Goldsmith Island and continue onto Burning Point at Shore Island where are joined by a dugong and her calf swimming around Our Dreamtime. Then it’s on through the Whitsunday Islands to Karen’s home town of Airlie Beach for a short but enjoyable stay. Join us this week on Sailing Nendaz as I get to work trying to repair our Raymarine (Raytheon) Type 2 Linear Drive Unit. This is our autopilot unit. It broke 1 hour into a 24 hour passage. We couldn't really turn around as we had doggy visa issues, and we were meeting friends too. I get to work taking apart the old unit, figuring out exactly why it broke, and then buy some replacement parts. It is an in depth video in how the autopilot unit works, and hopefully helps somebody out there fix theirs, if, or when it breaks! The Annapolis Boat Show is one of the largest and most prestigious events of its kind on the planet.  On paper, it’s a chance to check out the latest and greatest gadgets and tour some shiny new boats, but for us, it’s the one time of the year that a collection of our favorite people in the universe who are normally scattered all around the world can all be found in one place.  There would be lots of YouTubers, lots of shenanigans, lots of alcohol, and lots of incredible moments shared with the people who have made this entire journey possible, you guys, the Delos Tribe. The whole experience was pretty surreal and humbling in so many ways.  In 2010 I posted my first YouTube video about crossing the Pacific Ocean.  It was more or less a glorified home movie to let my friends and family know that I was still alive on my 18 month sabbatical from work.  But somehow, my 18 month sabbatical turned into a 13 year trip around the world, and my home movie evolved into an entire way of life. Never in a million years did I expect to have hundreds of thousands of people following our journey and supporting us at every step of the way.  But above all, the most unbelievable part was learning how the simple act of sharing our story would inspire so many others to build the life they always dreamed of.  Meeting with the Delos Tribe we heard stories of hope, challenges, loss, triumph, and everything in between.  And learning face to face what an impact our journey has had on their lives is an experience that I will always hold close to my heart, and it’s what inspires us to keep going and keep sharing it all with you.
