💬 Tell us what do you think about this last Leg of The Ocean Race? Nico, aka "The Brain" 🧠 is explaining us how tricky is the weather routing these days. Our crew is trying to find the best corridor to catch the maximum wind as possible while sailing along the Portuguese coast. 🇵🇹 🎥 Shot and Edit by Antoine Auriol I Team Malizia 🗺️ Race Tracker: https://www.team-malizia.com/ ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Follow Our Team On Social Media: ⬇️ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/team_malizia/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/borisherrmann Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/teammalizia/ TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@team_malizia LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/team... #teammalizia #theoceanrace #offshoreracing #sailing #aracewemustwin #climateactionnow #imoca #willharris #borisherrmann #rosalinkuiper #NicolasLunven #TheHague

2022 Xquisite X5 Plus Xquisite: Phoenix Marine Manufacturing, Corner Johns van Niekerk and, Christopher Starke St, Atlantis, Cape Town, 7539, South Africa From high above Vancouver, we head east across the continent, the Atlantic and all. The way across France to its Mediterranean shores and the home of last weeks guest Yacht the Gunboat 57 in picturesque La Grande-Motte. From here we head way South down to the Western side of South Africa and the yards of Phoenix Marine where each Xquisite X5 is born. Finally we head Southeast to the Stellenbosch wine region for our wine pairing this week, the Stellenbosch The Mentors Cabernet Franc 2018 by KWV. With access to grapes from more than 50 farms and 400 vineyard sites across the Western Cape's Paarl, Stellenbosch, Swartland, Perdeberg, Malmesbury, Darling, Elgin, Robertson and Wellington regions, KWV's ability as a commercial producer to source the finest quality grapes for a premium expression of the Cape Winelands is unrivalled. The winemaking team handle the grapes expertly before and during transport to KWV's cellar facilities in Paarl. This site covers nearly 32 hectares, at the heart of which stands KWV's imposing Cathedral Cellar, built in 1930. Innovation Corner • Xquisite X5 Plus: https://x5.xquisiteyachts.com Direct and indirect lightning prevention https://www.dinnteco.com/marine.php Lightning is a natural phenomenon in which electrical charges that accumulate on the clouds, are discharged to the ground when the lightning strike connects to the mast (ascending leader) releasing an enormous current. This is called neutralization or instantaneous compensation of the electric field. Traditional lightning protection tools use a lightning rod, cables and grounding materials on the bottom of the hull to try and conduct that huge amount of current to ground with as little damage to the vessel as possible. But a direct lightening strike is only half the equation. The high frequency electricity that forms even an indirect strike near your vessel, can travel through the water and the air and still cause catastrophic damage to electronics and boat systems. According to reports from our BoatUS Marine Insurance claim files, the odds of your boat being struck by lightning in any year are about one in 1,000. Some states, such as Idaho, have no lightning claims (no surprise). But for those of you with boats in Florida, nobody has to tell you that the odds there are greater. Much greater. Thirty-three percent of all lightning claims are from the Sunshine State, and the strike rate there is 3.3 boats per 1,000. Not surprisingly, the majority of strikes are on sailboats (four per 1,000), but powerboats get struck also (five per 10,000). Trawlers have the highest rate for powerboats (two per 1,000), and lightning has struck houseboats, bass boats, and even PWCs. Lightning-strike repairs tend to be expensive and time-consuming, but there are things you can do to lessen the damage after a strike. NOAA estimates a strike contains around 30,000,000 volts, and a quick zap to a 12-volt device will certainly destroy it. But lightning is like horseshoes: "Close" counts. There can sometimes be collateral damage when a nearby boat gets hit, either the result of the lightning's powerful electromagnetic field or the current induced by the field running through the boat's shore-power cord. This can create strange problems; some electronics may work fine, others that are adjacent might not, and still others may only work partially. In some cases, compasses have been off by 100 degrees. Repair costs are significant and typical repair times are from six to eight months. Owners are without their boats for extended periods but continue to pay crew, dockage, insurance and other ongoing expenses. DDCE Lightening Strike Prevention and Indirect Lightening Strike Damage Protection As opposed to trying to control or redirect the massive energy of a direct lightning strike, the DDCE lightning suppressor is designed to prevent the direct impact of lightning on the protected boat. Theoretically, it does this by collecting the positive charges that flow from the surrounding area and from the grounding plate on the bottom of the unit, and the negative charges from the atmosphere on the upper part of the unit. Both positive and negative charges are neutralized gradually sending a weak current back to the grounding plate. Art of The Region For our art of the region this week we have Errol Boyley's "Fishing" Errol Boyley was a well-known South African landscape painter who primarily worked with oil paint. He was born in East London, South Africa, on 31 May 1918 and studied at the South African School of Arts. After completing his studies, he began a career as a commercial artist, which he pursued for several years before turning to painting.
A nice afternoon of sailing, following my departure from Big Pine Key, Florida, ends in near calm conditions which persist through the night. Unfortunately I had not yet made into the swift Gulf Stream Current, so progress is slow. For the next several days I am picking my way through catspaws of wind, dodging the occasional thunderstorm, and enduring the scorching afternoon heat as our little ship makes her way north toward Beaufort, NC. When Guyot Environment crashed into 11th Hour Racing near The Hague in the final leg of The Ocean Race 2023, many people were left wondering – how can two IMOCA sailboats crewed by some of the best sailors in the world possibly collide in moderate conditions with good visibility? That’s exactly what we’re going to talk about in this video. Most of the around the world Ocean Race, as the name implies, takes place in the open ocean, far from land and other boats. These boats sail at insane speeds in very rough conditions, and the decks are often completely awash in very cold sea water. Because of this, one of the most significant risks to these sailors is being swept overboard, because the likelihood of being able to retrieve somebody alive is slim to none, especially at night in rough conditions. As a result, many of these boats have fully enclosed cockpits, where the crew can operate the boat from inside, which for most of the race is much safer and more comfortable than being on deck. However, because much of the race is in the open ocean, race organizers have been adding more inshore elements to the Ocean Race to increase visibility and spectator interest to keep the sponsors happy. In the Hague the boats had to complete two laps of a square inshore course before heading off to sea and the final stop of Genoa Italy. And it’s on these inshore legs that the enclosed cockpit design of these boats is really quite sub-optimal. It’s ironic that a boat design feature that has made the boats much safer for parts of the race has arguably made them more dangerous for others, but as they say, everything in sailing is a compromise. Monty delves deeper into the vision behind Switchblade design. First introduced in 2008 and serving as a testing ground for both RDM & SDM-compatible camber sails, the core concept behind the Switchblade has always been focused on maximizing the speed of a freeride sail without venturing into the professional range. Sailing Ronik on the Road. ⛵️ Sailing Ronik è viaggio, il viaggio è scoperta e conoscenza, la conoscenza è cultura, la cultura è capacità di potersi emozionare per le piccole grandi cose che scopriamo ogni giorno. Have a look at how I spent my time over the 1st year of owning this beauty. Once I got her to VA, I sailed her as much as I could. Even though I was inland on the Potomac River, it was very challenging due to the currents and the narrow, and shallow river. I was often fortunate to have company (who never knew anything about sailing tho…lol) aboard. The sailing eventually slowed as the Winter approached and I had shoulder surgery. Now I’m on the mend and preparing for the next chapter. Come along and enjoy.

How fast is our Open 60? | Extreme sailboat refit END Here's the link to Timo's swanky new phone AGM G2 Guardian https://www.agmmobile.com/products/agm-g2-guardian and here's the discount code JOSNAGM which gets you 8% off + charging dock + tempered film :) After destroying multiple phones in a short space of time during the refit, Timo has finally found his perfect indestructible phone. It not only has a 100 lumens torch, a 3.5 watt speaker, is drop and dust proof and can survive half an hour underwater, but the coolest thing is the infrared night vision and thermal camera which we’ll surely be showing you more of in future videos. Thanks to this phone we managed to find where we lost 1 volt in heat resistance ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- If you enjoyed this video please consider supporting us on Patreon https://www.patreon.com/SailingNV or with a one-off donation via https://ko-fi.com/sailingnv or paypal https://www.paypal.com/paypalme/sailingnv Or visit our Amazon storefront to see products we've been using https://www.amazon.com/shop/sailingnv ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Finally after a 2 year refit turning our Open 60 into a fast family cruiser - it’s time to head outside of the reef here in Fiji and test her in some big waves. Fiji is surrounded by the largest coral reef system in the south pacific, which as well as providing some great diving, snorkelling and some of the world’s most famous surf breaks - also offers more sailors some more protection from waves and some smooth sailing in a giant lagoon. Especially on the western side of the main island of Viti Levu around the Mamanuca and Yasawa islands which is where we’ve been since we re-launched as this western side of Fiji is also protected from the easterly trade winds. So this trip out of the reef to sail along Fiji’s southern coastline was an important test sail for NV after our big refit before embarking upon our first ocean passage. But our smiles were short lived - as before we’d made it out of the reef pass, our engine died. Our engine is an old Volvo which we’d overhauled during our refit- taking it out of the boat, and after a bad compression test, opened up and replaced valves and seals, sandblasting and repainting. However since being back in the water, other parts had been playing up and in particular we’d been leaking a lot of oil. So after all this hassle with the engine over the last few weeks, you can imagine our disappointment when it died on us - luckily this was short lived as it was a broken fuel pipe which Timo cut and re-attached. We made it out through the reef pass in darkness and after a successful first night at sea and we arrived at our destination shortly before lunch - a bay called Natandola - well known for it’s Surf breaks - which we witnessed crashing on either side of us as we entered... a little bit nerve wrecking given the recent reliability of our engine… But it was on the way home that the real fun started... -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Caio! We are Timo and Jo, an Italian and English couple with countless ocean miles under our belts. We're refitting an ex Vendée Globe Open 60 race boat originally designed & built & raced by famous Hungarian sailor Nándor Fa. He competed in her in the 1992 Vendée Globe (round the world single handed race known as “the Everest of the seas”), finishing 5th, becoming the first non-frenchman to finish. We are currently in Fiji giving this old gladiator a new lease on life, transforming her from an ex race boat to a performance family cruiser, which we'll need to make both dog and baby proof! We’re planning to set sail again in Oct 2022, so with limited time&money we have plenty of challenges ahead to turn our dreams into reality&get back on the water! Subscribe to our channel&track our progress as we release videos about our journey as well as "how to" videos about anything boat related. Never stop to dream, never stop to sail! @sailingsvcaterpillar4672 sailed into Aitutaki, Cook Islands, and made this video for any other cruisers interested in going there. It is in real time (not sped up) in order to see the actual current flow of the water. Part 1 is shot with GoPro from the Port side as we enter. Part 2 is shot from a drone flyover. We entered about 45 minutes after low tide. Depths are approximate and based on my recollection of glances at the transducer readings. This pass has a reputation for being difficult. Hopefully this is helpful to some of you. It should only improve as dredging continues. We loved Aitutaki and highly recommend a visit! Music credit goes to the Cook Islands Christian Church congregation in Arutanga.
We dove beneath the surface of Vancouver's False Creek to clean the hull of a cherished sailing classic, the Catalina 30 Wing Keel. Despite a recent haulout and painting, this yacht has begun to show signs of nature's relentless grasp, with an early veil of algae clinging to its hull. The sacrificial anodes, the silent protectors against corrosive elements, had a solid 85% of their life remaining. We understand the intricacies of maintaining a boat and its vital components like the ablative paint. This is designed to sluff away marine growth, helping to keep your boat in its prime condition. When dealing with ablatives we are careful to ensure our cleaning procedures do not contribute to wearing away this essential layer. It's better to leave a bit of algae growth in areas where paint is thin, rather than wear off the paint to the gelcoat. We revel in the challenge that each unique boat presents, adapting our cleaning approach to ensure the longevity and performance of your pride and joy. Filmed on a GoPro Hero 9 in Vancouver, British Columbia.
