I helped out on the Dinghy Cruising Association stand at the 2024 Douarnenez Boat Festival in France. I made several short videos of the event, and this is the first: There are thousands of people called "Roper" and hundreds of "Ropewalks" in coastal towns and cities around the world. This video shows why they were so named, and how ropes were traditionally made. Obviously this setup is just for demonstrations, as a real rope would be much longer than the 10m/30ft one being made here. Clearly there is a LOT of walking backwards, and co-ordination between the rope winder and the thread twister is essential. The video should be self explanatory so no commentary is needed.
We decide to ride the dinghy into the Island of Indian Key State Park to enjoy a little hike around the island. Come along with us and learn a little bit about this island and its importance to the Florida Keys. #exploring #Indiankeystatepark, #islandhiking Thanks for watching! We leave Greece after 85 days in the Schengen region. We head out of Kalimnos Greece, hoist the Turkish and Q Flag, then enter Turkish water, we hit land in Gulluk with what I would say was the easiest ever check-in to a country, docking up with a Fuel "bunker" boat, so relaxed! Check-in, was, hand over our documents to our agent, and shout over to the customs officer "nothing to declare", that was it!, we then head out of town across the water to what we called our "private beach", for a few days and had a nice day out walking the old Iasos castle ruins. Finally we head in to Bodrum to get ourselves a long awaited paddle board! :) Join us on Instagram https://www.instagram.com/sailingnona/ to get the latest info! The new Salona 46 combines the technology, design, quality & comfort elements with stunning outdoor. It is built to be solid but fast & lightweight due to advanced construction techniques. Hull and deck are produced in vacuum infusion in vinyl ester resin which results beyond the expected sailing performance. Besides, the Salona 46 is reinforced with a steel internal frame construction that supports the keel, mast and gives the yacht an extremely strong construction. At the same time, it’s smooth and easy to sail. Perfect match for regatta as well as for comfortable sailing journey with family or friends. Take a boat tour with us!

Stephen and I explored the Norman's Pond Cave in Exumas. 240 ft deep! We seem to have a thing for Bahamanian caves this season:-). Thanks to @CatamaranImpi for the intel so we could find this! According to Cavebiology.com, Norman's Pond Cave is an inland blue hole cave located near the northern tip of Norman's Pond Cay. The entrance to this fracture cave is a 2 m wide by 8 m long sinkhole situated just above the high tide line. The cave consists of a collapse-floored fissure up to 8 m wide that extends under the island and trends toward the open waters of Exuma Sound. A large entrance cavern is followed by a narrower section at 40 m depth that in turn opens onto a second room with a dome in the ceiling and a pit in the floor. Two deeper breakdown choked passages extend off the second room. Santorini is the stuff of legends — and in this episode, we experience it with a touch of luxury. We have another episode on Santorini, but have had requests to do more on the hotel we chose and why, so here you are! After sailing into port, we check into Hotel Ikies, a cliffside retreat with panoramic views of the caldera. We take you inside our suite, onto the private terrace, and into the infinity pool overlooking the Aegean. From there, we wander Oia’s iconic alleys, capture sunset magic, and enjoy slow breakfasts with a view. This isn’t just about the destination, it’s about how travel can shift your perspective. We also talk logistics — where to dock your boat, how to get to the hotel, and why shoulder season might be the best time to visit. If Santorini is on your bucket list, this episode offers both fantasy and practical planning. Please like, comment, subscribe and click the bell icon for notifications to keep in touch! Episode info: Ep 30: Boat projects: Poop box, cockpit floor, Dingy Engine, Diesel Engine and Sanding Sailing Free Spirit. Today to we continue with the various boat projects. A typical weekend of various projects that seem to be all over the place. Since returning from Annapolis with boat parts we have a long list of items to complete so we can get her closer to staying on the boat and doing some testing and shake downs. We ran out of room in the salon and now it’s Go time! We install the poop box today (of course that didn’t turn out as easy as just dropping it in, why would it), Nancy makes Free Spirit to start to look pretty by completing the cockpit floor with Faux Teak foam finishing and Andy and kids tackle adding oil to the dingy motor and bleed the engine as there was a boo-boo and air got into the lines… Nancy sands the staircase and applies varnish to the steps. Goal has been set to try and sleep on the boat for overnights by Christmas so some things get to get done to get us to that point All financial contributions (or items purchased on Amazon) are tax deductible for your US income tax returns for full face and/or retail value. You contribution helps us to continue with project and support events to help us engage with our veterans thru events such as day sailings, working on the boat to help with projects and social gatherings. Do you know what it takes to be a real sailor? Its not always about what they do, more often than not its how they think. In this episode I will discuss Cognitive Sailing and "The Four Core Elements of Sailing" This will not only help you sail better, but hopefully live better. Dedicated sailors often make great leaders because they learn early that setting expectations and managing risk make a safer boat and build great teams. They don't buy cool shirts and dock shoes, they think differently.

► On the second-hand market for boats under 40 feet, the Lagoon 380 has become the must-have. Admittedly, this bestseller, which saw more than 900 examples built, has aged pretty well and offers remarkable comfort for its size... but for budgets just over €100,000, there are other models to consider, such as the Athena 38 by Fountaine Pajot, which offers two advantages: it is more affordable than the Lagoon and is faster under sail! ► Launched at the La Rochelle boat show in September 1994, the Athena 38 was positioned between the Tobago 35 and the Venezia 42. All the models in this second generation, designed by Joubert/Nivelt, are characterized by their blunt bows, very rounded shapes on the inside (the miracle that polyester GRP must have been for naval architects long familiar with wood, steel, aluminum, and chined bilges!) and finally the overhanging coachroof cap, which is the one feature that would be retained and still remains today. ► Lightweight and well-canvased, the Athena 38 is lively and fun to sail from the single helm station – positioned on the aft face of the coachroof, on the starboard side. Obviously, the relatively short length and skeg keels reduced do it no favors when close-hauled in bigger seas, but in all other conditions, this little catamaran will surprise more than one helmsman with its performance - which can be boosted by decent sails and the installation of folding propellers. ► The model Graham presents to us is from 2001 and is a three-cabin version - the entire starboard hull is dedicated to the owner. The nacelle offers a rounded saloon that can easily accommodate six people, a chart table/desk, and a U-shaped galley. Logically, there is only one bathroom per hull. On the starboard side, Graham has a fully equipped workshop. Admittedly, the comfort is somewhat rustic, the sill at the entrance to the nacelle is a higher than we see today, the sugarscoops are not particularly wide and the paneling is a little worn in places... but for a nearly 25-year-old multihull purchased for €115,000, the Athena 38 still has a lot to offer and, above all, can take you anywhere: An excellent base for refit! ► Technical specifications: Builder: Fountaine Pajot Architect: Joubert/Nivelt Interior design: Olivier Flahault Length: 38’ (11.6 m) Beam: 20’8” (6.3 m) Draft: 3’1” (0.95 m) Air draft: 59’ (17.85 m) Light displacement: 12,125 lbs (5.5 t) Sail area: 947 sq ft (88 m²) Motors: 2 x 20 HP Fuel: 180 l Water: 360 l Second-hand price: from €100,000 ex-tax ► Sign up for our newsletter and win a free two-month subscription to Multihulls World by clicking here: https://bit.ly/48JP1Vk ► Become a FREE SUBSCRIBER to Multihulls World's YouTube page now - https://www.youtube.com/c/MultihullsWorld ► Log on to our website to discover over 600 multihulls tests! Sunday lunch onboard the ship is not a meal… it’s a full-scale food attack 😂🍗 You eat thinking it’s “just lunch” and suddenly your cabin bed starts calling your name 😴🚪 Sea outside. Food inside. Productivity? Washed overboard. #lifeatsea #ship #merchantnavy

You think a ship stops only in port? Surprise 😏 This is what it really looks like when a cargo ship’s Main Engine is stopped in the middle of the ocean. No traffic jams, no honking… just calm seas, silence, and a crew casually doing their job like it’s another day at the office. Stopped doesn’t always mean trouble — sometimes it’s maintenance, checks, or planned operations. Life at sea is peaceful, technical, and way cooler than you imagine 🌊⚙️ If you thought ships run non-stop… welcome to reality.
In this video, we demonstrate a real catamaran mooring maneuver in the Mediterranean, filmed in Agkistri Island, Greece, under realistic harbour constraints. This is not a marina demo or a staged setup. It’s a live operational scenario where space, wind awareness, crew coordination, and timing matter. You’ll see: How we approach mooring a catamaran in a tight Mediterranean harbour Decision-making under limited space and variable conditions Practical skipper considerations specific to catamarans vs monohulls Crew positioning and communication during the maneuver Why calm execution beats aggressive corrections in confined areas This video focuses on operational seamanship, not theory. The goal is to show how experienced skippers manage real situations as they unfold — without shortcuts, edits, or ideal conditions. 📍 Location: Agkistri Island, Greece ⛵ Vessel Type: Catamaran Lagoon 380 🎯 Focus: Mediterranean mooring, harbour handling, skipper decision-making Epic Navigator – Offshore Seamanship & Skipper Training 🌐 Website: https://epicnavigator.com/ 📲 WhatsApp: +30 6948 188 226 ✉️ Email: info@epicnavigator.com
Here's a highlights from the Sydney Multihull Regatta with a great turn up of 15 multihulls including both a fleet of Seawinds, plus a mix of other boats. Despite testing variable conditions we enjoyed some very close racing with much of the fleet just 30 seconds apart on the finish line on race 1. Supported by Seawind Catamarans, Multihull Central in conjunction with the Multihull Cruising Yacht Club Inc. hosted the Sydney Multihull Regatta. We look forward to next year’s regatta and hope to see many more multihulls with us to join in on the fun.
