During our search for the next cruising sailboat, there have been only a few that have gotten Tambi really excited. The Kadey Krogen 38 is one of those boats. The size, layout, storage, galley and staterooms are all things that are highly important to Tambi. Me on the other hand, I'm more concerned about rigging, steering, structural integrity, mechanical & electrical systems. The Kadey Krogen 38 seems to deliver on most of these important aspects. One way that the Kadey Krogen 38 falls short is that they all seem to have one particular achilles heel - they leak like sieves! This is evident by the rotten wood beneath port-lights, inside cabinetry, and inside the wooden knees that engage with the chainplates. So do the advantages of the Kadey Krogen 38 outweigh the drawbacks? I know Tambi really loves the layout, storage, and cabins. A huge component of successful long-term cruising is owning a boat that makes the woman happy. Based on that fact alone I think this sailboat could be a solid contender for our future boat. After 10 months of waiting and one failed attempt, our mast is finally back up again! Back in Episode 9 you'll see that we tried to raise our mast, but the new rigging we ordered was not the right size, and we had to bring it back to have it redone. A few month and one weird encounter later, we have it in our hands again and can turn ourselves into a sailboat. Jessica continues her work on getting the cabin top ready for new Awl Grip paint, after removing the Petit EZ Poxy that had been applied only a year ago. Matt works on other projects that are best finished while still in the yard, like varnishing all our trim for the interior. Safe sailing. Boat: White Shadow is a Van De Stadt ‘Seal’ 36 (11 metres). She is hand made in steel, 2004, with a round bilge (hull) and a modified coach roof. This makes her a ‘one off’ and in my opinion the most beautiful Van De Stadt 36 ever built. The camera gear: Main camera is a Panasonic Hc-v700. Most shots are done with an external mic (Shenggu sg 108) with a sponge and dead kitten attached. Action stuff and small blogging is done with a Sony Hdr-as30v. Underwater video Gopro3plus. Editing: Final cut pro on a Macbook. Most of the material for each video is filmed over a period of several weeks or so and the editing of each episode is normally done over a day. This process can take longer if original music is used or permissions are needed for copyrighted materials etc. Much time is spent sorting out technical problems. In this case I normally get the help of a younger person who understands computerie stuff! There are also times when filming, editing and uploading is not possible due to being at sea or in locations with no internet access. Content: I have found that filming and releasing material over a period of time is better than doing ‘vlog’ style videos and trying to make episodes out of whats happened in a week, regardless if it’s good content or not. By filming over a period of time I can be more selective in what goes into each video. My aim is to avoid ‘blar bar mundane’ and have at least one or two exciting and interesting events in every video. Every video has to be entertaining. Safe sailing. Boat: White Shadow is a Van De Stadt ‘Seal’ 36 (11 metres). She is hand made in steel, 2004, with a round bilge (hull) and a modified coach roof. This makes her a ‘one off’ and in my opinion the most beautiful Van De Stadt 36 ever built. The camera gear: Main camera is a Panasonic Hc- V700 with a Rode External mic with a sponge and dead kitten attached. Action, underwater scenes and small blogging is done with two Osmo action cams. Some boat shots are done with a Dji gimbal camera. Editing: Final cut pro on a Macbook. Most of the material for each video is filmed over a period of several weeks or so and the editing of each episode is normally done over a day. This process can take longer if original music is used or permissions are needed for copyrighted materials etc. Much time is spent sorting out technical problems. In this case I normally get the help of a younger person who understands computerie stuff! There are also times when filming, editing and uploading is not possible due to being at sea or in locations with no internet access. Content: I have found that filming and releasing material over a period of time is better than doing ‘vlog’ style videos and trying to make episodes out of whats happened in a week, regardless if it’s good content or not. By filming over a period of time I can be more selective in what goes into each video. My aim is to avoid ‘bland and mundane’ and have at least one or two exciting and interesting events in every video. Every video has to be entertaining. We don't talk about it that much but yes, Willa's allergies are a constant threat. We are constantly planning and thinking about her anaphylaxis when we go out, when we're around friends and when we're preparing food aboard. The boat life has proven to be a wonderful little bubble to protect her. Rolly anchorages are the worst, so we decide to head over to calmer waters where we let you all know of what is going on in the world of Nandji! We have some massive news!!! Being stuck in this beautiful location has been hard at times but we are lucky to be somewhere safe and friendly. Over the last few months, we have had time to reflect on our journey thus far and it has been a great time to remember the places we have visited and the people we have met along the way. With no sailing experience, we bought a yacht, got it blue water cruising ready and set off from Australia sailing to the Pacific! We have since cruised through New Caledonia, Vanuatu, the Solomon islands, Papua New Guinea, Indonesia and then onto the boat yard in Malaysia to prepare for the years to come. With a new engine, we continued onto Thailand, then back down into Indonesia and specifically West Sumatra to live the island life and chase the surf. With our Sailing plans changing, we returned to Thailand to wait for the weather and begin our journey to the northern route of the Indian Ocean to Sri Lanka before heading south across the Indian Ocean once cyclone season has finished and the trade winds begin! We were on our shake down sail when the mooring we were on failed and our home ended up on the reef. We saved the old girl and got her back to the boat yard for repairs to continue on our adventure! Ready to sail across the Indian Ocean, we were only days away from leaving when the pandemic begun closing countries around us... We are stuck for now, but enjoying the slower pace! We departed the east coast of Australia in July 2017 and have since sailed over 10000nm offshore. We have explored some amazing countries and met some beautiful people along the way. We have experienced so many different and diverse cultures, dived pristine reefs, surfed solo in the middle of nowhere, spent weeks at sea, dealt with storms, big waves, strong winds and had the time of our lives doing it! Arriving back to Arabella after so long spent away was a bittersweet moment. Although excited to move on and start doing the types of adventures that Arabella was built for, the passing of Steve's mom is a somber point from which to begin again. After recounting how his mom's illness has been an integral part of Arabella's journey to the water, it's time to find out where Steve and Robin plan to head to first in search of warm waters for the coming winter. Then it's off to Boothbay, Maine to get to work on the boat. Before Arabella can continue on her journey, Steve has quite the to-do list for refitting the boat—including building a real dodger to replace the wonky, makeshift dodger that has seen its days. A familiar cast of characters comes to lend a hand to get as much done as possible for Arabella to be ready for distant travels. Snorkeling, fast dingy ride, margaritas and dancing! We took the dingy to Pigeon Key and went snorkeling. Unfortunately the Sony camera started leaking while trying to get some underwater footage. There were tons of fish in the wonderfully warm water. On the way back we stopped at a local restaurant/bar and enjoyed margaritas and did some dancing. Get Unseen footage, Exclusive vids and engage with us more personally! http://www.patreon.com/Nandji In this episode of Sailing Nandji, we head out for a sail to north coast of Langkawi to explore the intricate mangrove system that occupies majority of the coast line. With miles and miles of back waters to explore, we load up Flubber and do our best to get lost! Langkawi is only 6 degrees above the equator and is protected from the ocean swell. These two factors mean that sailing in the area is often light winds and smooth seas. It is a very relaxing and peaceful way to travel. We sail 20 nautical miles to reach this maze of creeks and anchor through a tight gap between two cliffs! What an amazing place! With no sailing experience, we bought a yacht, got it blue water cruising ready and set off from Australia sailing to the Pacific! We have since cruised through New Caledonia, Vanuatu, the Solomon islands, Papua New Guinea, Indonesia and then onto the boat yard in Malaysia to prepare for the years to come. With a new engine, we continued onto Thailand, then back down into Indonesia and specifically West Sumatra to live the island life and chase the surf. With our Sailing plans changing, we returned to Thailand to wait for the weather and begin our journey to the northern route of the Indian Ocean to Sri Lanka before heading south across the Indian Ocean once cyclone season has finished and the trade winds begin! We were on our shake down sail when the mooring we were on failed and our home ended up on the reef. We saved the old girl and got her back to the boat yard for repairs to continue on our adventure! Ready to sail across the Indian Ocean, we were only days away from leaving when the pandemic begun closing countries around us... We are stuck for now, but enjoying the slower pace! We departed the east coast of Australia in July 2017 and have since sailed over 10000nm offshore. We have explored some amazing countries and met some beautiful people along the way. We have experienced so many different and diverse cultures, dived pristine reefs, surfed solo in the middle of nowhere, spent weeks at sea, dealt with storms, big waves, strong winds and had the time of our lives doing it! The adventure is just beginning as we sail West with the trades around the World! After interviewing captains from around the world, I found a captain to help me complete my sailing circumnavigation on SV Brick House, after 13 years of sailing around the world with my late husband, Patrick Childress. Captain Michael Hayward was right here at the Royal Cape Yacht Club (RCYC), and is packing up his life to sail away with me. It is really hard for me to believe that I could get so lucky so fast after losing Patrick. It sort of freaks me out when I look from the outside in...i. know this is really really fast, but it's feeling pretty right too. I was pretty determined and focused about what I wanted in a new sailing companion. I didn't wait for it to drop in my lap, thats for sure. Life is too precious to wait around for a miracle... I will always miss Patrick, every single day, and he will always be within me, guiding my every decision...but with the pressure of immigration, being in a foreign port on my own, I had to put a move on things. That circumstance is likely a blessing in disguise...pushing me forward faster than most newly widowed women could ever cope with. You do what you gotta do I suppose...and I need to sail onwards...soon. And I will.
