We left San Francisco Bay to continue our passage down the US West Coast, cruising the Channel Islands on our way. From remote and rugged San Miguel Island, to the charming town on Avalon on Catalina Island, we were continually surprised by how great the cruising was on these desert California islands. Eventually we worked our way down to the Mexican border, poised for the next big step in our adventure. Julia is an Atkin designed Ingrid ketch. Our Trans-Atlantic voyage is approaching the end! We pick up this video on Day 18, after we get the news that our friends on s/v Calico Skies are arriving in Horta, while we still have 700 miles left and can expect winds on the nose for the next 72 hours. After plugging through those, we go back to our sunny and calm days and while spending a little time outside get the opportunity to see some sea life in the water. Huge groups of sea salp are floating next to our boat, and we even put the GoPro in the water to get a better look. While we're stuck in what we hope is the last of our high pressure systems, we throw up our drifter to see how it works in place of a spinnaker. At over 40 years old we weren't sure what to expect with this sail, but it did a great job of giving us a little extra oomph! Then...there's landfall! The day we had been waiting to see for such a long time! Even though we had a fantastic crossing and loved our time at sea, we were more than ready to dock in Horta and begin enjoying the wonderful Azores again. Much love from the Atlantic Ocean! Safe sailing. Boat: White Shadow is a Van De Stadt ‘Seal’ 36 (11 metres). She is hand made in steel, 2004, with a round bilge (hull) and a modified coach roof. This makes her a ‘one off’ and in my opinion the most beautiful Van De Stadt 36 ever built. The camera gear: Main camera is a Panasonic Hc- V700 with a Rode External mic with a sponge and dead kitten attached. Action, underwater scenes and small blogging is done with two Osmo action cams. Some boat shots are done with a Dji gimbal camera. Editing: Final cut pro on a Macbook. Most of the material for each video is filmed over a period of several weeks or so and the editing of each episode is normally done over a day. This process can take longer if original music is used or permissions are needed for copyrighted materials etc. Much time is spent sorting out technical problems. In this case I normally get the help of a younger person who understands computerie stuff! There are also times when filming, editing and uploading is not possible due to being at sea or in locations with no internet access. Content: I have found that filming and releasing material over a period of time is better than doing ‘vlog’ style videos and trying to make episodes out of whats happened in a week, regardless if it’s good content or not. By filming over a period of time I can be more selective in what goes into each video. My aim is to avoid ‘bland and mundane’ and have at least one or two exciting and interesting events in every video. Every video has to be entertaining. Comments and being at sea: I love reading your comments. Most weeks Im able to read everyone. I cant reply to everybody but I do read and enjoy them. Keep them coming! There are times that It might seem I'm not on the internet for certain periods, this is normally when Im at sea on passage. While Im out on the Ocean I have completely no communications with the outside World. I build the new rudder last year by making a mold from the old rudder and used vacuum infusion to form the new shells. The town of St. Pierre in Martinique was once the capital of the island but 1902 a volcanic eruption killed everybody except one guy! We went hiking on the volcano Montagne Pelée and then visited the destroyed city. Beside from some land exploration we also stayed in a couple of very nice anchorages along the west coast of Martinique. And we got our own anchor guard on the ocean floor :) We are a Swedish couple who wanted a different kind of life. So we moved aboard our sailboat RAN, a custom built aluminium Beason 40, and untied the lines in the middle of the Swedish winter and started to sail south along the coast of Europe. Die Passage von der Karibik nach Florida gilt im April als einfach und das Wetter soll recht gut sein. Jedoch auf dieser Fahrt ist vieles anders. Neben den herrlichen Segelmomenten ist das Wetter oft unbeständig. Viele Squalls ziehen insbesondere in der Nacht durch. Einem Gewitter kann ich mit knapper Not entkommen. Ich habe viel Glück beim Angeln. Die neue Ausrüstung mit größerer Trommel, stärkerer Schnur und größerem Köder bewährt sich. Drei Mahi Mahi kann ich in den paar Tagen aus dem Meer fischen und es gibt natürlich viel Fisch zu essen. Zum Schluss durchfahre ich die Straits of Florida bei Nordostwind mit Stärke 7. Hier sind die Verhältnisse aufgrund des starken Golfstroms, der gegen Wind und Welle steht, dann schon grenzwertig für die Jambo, aber sie packt es natürlich. Nach 1124 sm fällt nach 8 Tagen der Anker im Lake Sylvia, Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Viel Spaß! Mein 1. With Florence stocked up for an Ocean crossing we head offshore, sailing from Thailand to the northern tip of Indonesia. This is the first real test of our new sails. Hello Everyone! We are so sad to be leaving all the fun and excitement of our adventures these past few months behind us. Although our time has come to an end for the time being we are already planning big things, trips, travels, etc. for the future. We leave the Great Bahama banks and head across the Gulf Stream, experience the busy shipping channel, and FINALLY catch a Mahi Mahi.
