Ilhabela, Brazil, is a great island with so many different places. We started this week in Saco do Sombrio, where we got 150 squids, and we sailed back to Saco da Capela. We explore the Island of Ilhabela a little bit and then we drove to Guarujá to fix our rudder quadrant and we visited some good friends, Reginaldo, Fred and Ramiro and Gika from Força Maior. Anchored, auto pilot, fuel gauge, horn, raymarine Ordered a new fuel gauge, as both of ours stopped working and anchored while waiting for its delivery. This gave us some time to tweak a few things on Isabella. Steve solved the mystery of the auto pilot not working. It was a network issue and once the old Actisense converter was disconnected, the auto pilot recognized all other instruments and is now fully functional. We added a single 118 dB horn. Installed the new fuel gauge below which also sends a signal to the fuel gauge in the cockpit. They both work now. We were running low on provisions (mainly coffee and wine) so launched the dingy to go into town. The outboard motor stopped working and Steve had to row us back to the boat. The inner lining of the fuel hose had collapsed which prevented fuel flowing to the outboard. That’s been replaced and provisions restocked. Luckily there wasn’t too much water in the fuel filter. Steve filtered out the water and added some fuel additive. Waiting for the holiday to be over and a weather window to continue our cruise. Wishing you all a very happy and safe holiday season! Before the six skippers had even started the solo race around the world in their 32m giant trimarans it was clear that the Arkea Ultim Challenge Brest was a very special race. While there is nothing new in solo circumnavigations, this challenge raised the bar beyond anything we have seen before. And when each of the skippers stepped ashore after a 24,000 mile race that had seen most of them clock up more than 30,000 miles through the water, it was also clear just how much this race had meant to them. "This history belongs to us, it will be remembered for the rest of our lives" - Thomas Coville "I am just happy to have got to the finish like I did" - Charles Caudrelier. In this episode two of the pioneers of solo circumnavigation, Sir Robin Knox-Johnston and Dee Caffari talk exclusively to Matt Sheahan about what happened and why this race was so special. With archive footage from 1994 Sir Robin also looks back at his team's performance aboard ENZA when they broke the record for a fully crewed circumnavigation while Dee considers what she has learned from the Ultims for team's current campaign to set a new record around the world. The 2023/24 season has been extraordinary for circumnavigations with three individual races taking place. At the other end of the speed/budget/size scale to the Ultims, Cole Brauer sent the US the newswires into a frenzy as she became the first American woman to complete a non-stop solo circumnavigation in her diminutive Class 40. Sailing to secluded beaches, Skinny dipping, Beach picnics, Dolphins, new destinations, hiking and finally some warm weather! This week we Sail to an amazing secluded beach only accessible by boat ON Simi Island in Greece. It turns out to be a lot warmer than we anticipated for our beach picnic and we really didn't dress for the occasion, so we make the most of having the entire beach to ourselves and go for a nude swim! We sail to the other side of the island to get some protection from some strong wind forecast, do a bit of hiking and then leave for another island called Chalki, on the way were lucky enough to be treated to some dolphins playing at the bow! what an amazing introduction to being back in Greece! Safe sailing. Boat: White Shadow is a Van De Stadt ‘Seal’ 36 (11 metres). She is hand made in steel, 2004, with a round bilge (hull) and a modified coach roof. This makes her a ‘one off’ and in my opinion the most beautiful Van De Stadt 36 ever built. The camera gear: Main camera is a Panasonic Hc-v700. Most shots are done with an external mic (Shenggu sg 108) with a sponge and dead kitten attached. Action stuff and small blogging is done with a Sony Hdr-as30v. Underwater video Gopro3plus. Editing: Final cut pro on a Macbook. Most of the material for each video is filmed over a period of several weeks or so and the editing of each episode is normally done over a day. This process can take longer if original music is used or permissions are needed for copyrighted materials etc. Much time is spent sorting out technical problems. In this case I normally get the help of a younger person who understands computerie stuff! There are also times when filming, editing and uploading is not possible due to being at sea or in locations with no internet access. Content: I have found that filming and releasing material over a period of time is better than doing ‘vlog’ style videos and trying to make episodes out of whats happened in a week, regardless if it’s good content or not. By filming over a period of time I can be more selective in what goes into each video. My aim is to avoid ‘blar bar mundane’ and have at least one or two exciting and interesting events in every video. Every video has to be entertaining. Comments and being at sea: I love reading your comments. Most weeks Im able to read everyone. I cant reply to everybody but I do read and enjoy them. Keep them coming! There are times that It might seem I'm not on the internet for certain periods, this is normally when Im at sea on passage. While Im out on the Ocean I have completely no communications with the outside World.
