Leaving paradise and heading north for winter. It seems a little backwards. We've been in the Florida Keys for quite some time and needed a change. Before leaving we checked out systems, safety gear, and more. Smooth sailing north and decided to stop at Ft. Lauderdale for some additional fuel and us. Gotta love those bascule bridges. We hate going under 65’ fixed bridges since we have a 63’ air draft. Leaving Ft. Lauderdale we had great cruising and then hit some weather. We decided to duck in and found a very nice anchorage. The bottom has great holding and we are well hooked with our 121 pound Rocna anchor. Our Lofrans Falkon windlass is definitely up to the task maneuvering that size of an anchor. We have 200 feet of 1/2 inch chain and the Rocna handles the currents and occasional swells without a problem. Our plants are enjoying sun time in the cock pit. Once anchored we charged our batteries with 1000 watts of solar and 400 watts of wind generator. We also have a Northern Lights 5 kw generator for backup. Thanks for viewing. This week on Sailing Nandji, the time has come to depart the beautiful island of Wayag. The upwind passage of 400nm to the city of Ambon was no easy task. The strong trade winds however had been howling through the area for over a week and showed no sign of easing. We put on our PFDs and big boy pants and tackled the rough seas. With strong winds of 30 knots on the nose, it made for some challenging sailing at first. This is the first tour and test of the Riviera 6800 Sport Yacht Platinium which was recently premiered to the public in Australia at the Sanctuary Cove Boat Show. For a vessel of this size I am amazed that the operation of this boat is still just as easy and functional as the smaller Riv's. The Volvo DPS with Dock Assist actually makes this 70ft+ yacht as easy to handle as a 40ft'er! Riv have achieved something that in my opinion is going to keep families together. A boat like this, that is this easy to operate will facilitate relaxed days. After two long years in the work yard and additional two months in the water, and we're ready to toss off our dock lines! We aren't headed out for good, but we are more than ready for a shakedown cruise to see how systems are working, what still needs to be addressed before we can shove off for good, and most importantly, just give ourselves a nice vacation away from work and from the marina. Getting ready to go came with a few of its own problems, and even for a shakedown we left about two weeks later than anticipated. Once we shoved off though, it was a nice 28 mile ride down the St. Lucie River into Stuart, which is our first stop on our trip. We got the anchor down just before thunderstorms came in over us and even used them for a fresh water rinse on deck. Stay tuned for the next episode where we hopefully move ourselves further down the coast on our shakedown and take Elements of Life for her first sail. Cheers from the WATER!!
