But flying a drone is even harder from a moving vessel, scarier over water, and the worst when you have to navigate around a sailboat’s rigging to retrieve it, while moving. We’ve flown our Mavic at anchor, and while underway on the rivers — when the mast and rigging were removed. And we’ve flown it with others onboard who could help navigate while landing (which really is a two-person operation). What a relief!! The good news today is that after so long working on the roof, we finally have a painted and rust free roof. This is the 13th episode towards our goal of building, by ourselves, a Tiny Shipping Container House and producing a Youtube Series about it called Living Tiny Project. Well we do know black is not the right color to paint a shipping container roof, but we actually have an explanation for choosing this specific kind of paint. As in the beginning we didn't know what we where doing, we actually use different kind of paint in different parts of the roof. This been said I think the best is to share with you guys what we learned from it. In our opinion, if we would start all over again and do it “rigth” from scratch, this is how we would do it: 1st - Wash the shipping container with a pressurized hose. 2nd - Grind off the big rust parts. 3rd - Patch the necessary holes. 4th - Clean the surface with a degreasing agent. 5th - Treat any spot that still has any sign of rust with rust converter. 6th - 24 hours later 2 cros-layers of black matte vinyl paint (20 minutes interval). 7th - 20 minutes later 2 layers of liquid asphalt paint (24 hours interval). That’s just our opinion, if you find anything wrong let us know on the comments section below. If you like small living spaces and shipping container architecture this channel is for you. The summer is slowly starting in Alaska and we're getting ready to set sail from Hawaii as soon as the weather improves. While waiting we install a new heater which will be needed up north. We also visit John and Amanda from 48 North aboard their Hallberg Rassy 46, Mahina Tiare. Provisioning is being done and we enjoy our last evening at Waikiki beach and soak in the warm sun and tropical weather. We are a Swedish couple who wanted a different kind of life. So we moved aboard our sailboat RAN, a custom built Beason 40 in aluminium, untied the lines in the middle of the Swedish winter and started to sail south along the coast of Europe. A stormy overnight sail 90 miles out into the Indian Ocean to reach the Mentawai Islands off the coast of Sumatra. Sailing never goes to plan as our watch pattern is broken first by faulty electronics and second by a massive thunderstorm. However the goal is worth the trials of this passage as we arrive in the beautiful Mentawai islands. Exploring here we discover the empty surf resorts which are a result of the Indonesian border being closed to foreign tourists. We are a British couple who set off from England in 2016 to fulfill our dream of sailing around the world on our 37ft sail boat, Florence. Imagine what one week of cruising looks like, and you’ll never get two identical weeks. BUT— if we had to pick one, these 7 days are pretty typical of our cruising life. We spent some time at anchor, and one day at the dock. We enjoy some gorgeous sunshine, and run from a storm. We travel some days, others we stay put. We sail when the wind blows and motor when we it doesn’t. We get some work done, a workout in, and a little time at the beach. And we celebrate Kirk’s birthday — even though that doesn’t happen every week (which he’s certainly relieved about, though I would love more excuses to go out for ice cream!) Hope you enjoy! After 2 long months of boat work, SPLASH DAY is finally here!!! Putting our new boat in the water for the first time! https://www.sailingnandji.com A lot has changed in our world of late… We started out 2023 full steam ahead with some drastic changes in our lives. Arriving back into Thailand after cruising the West Sumatra islands for the season, we set our selves a very challenging goal of selling our beloved sailboat Nandji in the search for a bigger vessel for our family. With a small budget we knew we had some work ahead of us, but went about seeking out a proven blue water sailboat that would continue to carry our family around the world. Finding a Bob Perry design Tayana 47 that had been siting on the hard stand for a number of years, we checked it out and honestly, despite all of the work it needed, I fell in love instantly and knew this was the boat for us. We returned 4 times to the boat evaluating the work that needed to be done to get her floating again. Within weeks we had accepted an offer for our old sailboat, and then put in offer on the Tayana and it was accepted!! We now have a new boat that’s in need of some love to bring her back to her former glory. We were on a limited time schedule to get the boat sea worthy as the vessels time in Thailand was due to expire. The next two months have been filled with long hot days in the boat yard as we ripped tore and rebuilt the rotted interior and completed some much needed upgrades to get the boat ready for splash day. It has been a long time coming and looking back is hard to believe we are finally at this point where our new boat is sitting in the cradles. With one last late night coat of antifoul, launch day has arrived and the first phase of boat work is complete. The boat broached, and he immediately noticed that it wasn’t behaving as usual. Upon inspection, he discovered that the foil was broken at the elbow. We started this week realizing that a refit never ends in a boat, but at least you can choose a beautiful place to work and also have the chance to explore the surrounds. We started this week in Saco da Ribeira in São Paulo, Brazil. We installed a new equipment in our sailboat, we went to a new beach close to the anchorage, had a lot of fun bodysurfing, skimsurfing and also enjoyed some sailing to Ilha Anchieta and got to know another new Island in Brazil.
