The Smart Cat S280 starts to fulfill a gap in the cruising catamaran market that needed to be filled. Before today, "small and affordable" could never enter the same sentence as "cruising catamaran," with most cruising catamarans starting at half a million dollars or more. I've been saying that the catamaran market in general is moving towards a "bigger is better" mentality and that's definitely not the always the case. I've been wanting smaller and more affordable cats to go on the new boat market for a long time now, and the Smart Cat S280, although definitely not perfect, is a breath of fresh air in that regard. She's small, relatively affordable with a price tag of $149,900, and offers a ton of accommodation for a 28 foot boat. She's built to be a daysailer, weekended or light coastal cruiser, and I think she would be a fun boat for those purposes. I'd love to see more manufacturers start to compete in this niche. Our food and water situation isn't good so we head back to the local Guna Village of Nargana to stock up. We hear there is a monkey in town kept as a pet so decided to check it and bring some bananas for it. We also hear that its' living condition are not ideal and that some cruisers are trying to raise funds from other sailors to rescue the poor monkey. It is a cute bundle of all legs and arms and is very affectionate towards me (Plukky). I think it senses that I am not too far evolved from it and therefore good company. Acompáñanos en una jornada extraordinaria en la densa jungla de Panamá, donde el barco quedó varado durante seis meses de sufrimiento. Lo que encontramos fue sorprendente y desafiante: nuestra embarcación estaba en condiciones críticas. Durante dos semanas, emprendimos duros trabajos de restauración. Learning to sail will mean you must know how to reef. Reefing is the term used to describe the action of reducing he amount of sail area. By reducing sail size in a controlled manner the boat will still sail but with less drive from the sail. The benefit to the sailor particularly when learning is that the process will allow you to sail in a wider range of wind conditions and perhaps sail on windier days where a capsize is very likely if you don't reef. We jumped on a 1991 Corsair F-27 Trimaran that "Needs some TLC." These boats are amazing in so many ways. They're extremely safe, comfortable, and fast performance cruising vessels. These boats will easily do double digit average speeds, and also sail faster than the wind. They're also extremely versatile with the ability for the amas to fold and the whole boat to go on a trailer. Obviously, the downside is a small interior living space and little payload. Every boat is a compromise. We hope to take her to the Bahamas as soon as we can! We plan on restoring this boat and sailing her as much as possible during the rest of the gap between now and getting our custom designed, next, next boat next year hopefully.
