When we were almost finished we found a boat 700km away from our hometown that was neglected for over 22 years and we spent 2 years refitting her (Season 3). On the season 4 we sailed for 2 years (exploring the Brazilian coast and part of the Caribbean), we sold our boat and we moved to Europe. Wow! Engine problem solved (fingers crossed), how exciting! We had our fuel polished and the fuel tank completely cleaned. The engine purrs like a kitten and we’re hoping no more fuel delivery issues. It was a wonderful discovery process and lots of information was revealed about our tank. Such as: • the tank is fiberglass and not stainless • we had baffles-unfortunately with rusted rods • tank capacity is 170 gallons of fuel - not 132 gallons as thought previously • we now know the shape of the tank • when the fuel gauge says empty…we have about 10 more gallons of fuel Y’all, we saw a great air show and did some dancing, to celebrate finally getting to the bottom of the fuel delivery problem. Did we really expect to get through of all of these storms scot free? One afternoon while floating on our mooring ball in St Augustine, a tiny squall rolls in. It doesn’t look that bad, but it proves itself otherwise. A huge crack of lightning seems to hit the water within a couple hundred feet of us. Initially we don’t think anything of it, but then, one by one, we discover a cascade of failures throughout our electrical system. According to the insurance agent that assisted with our claim, 1/3 of all Boat US’s lightning strike claims come from Florida. Hunting for a boatyard to haul out Soulianis had already proven difficult — everywhere seemed to be full. Now we really need a haul out ASAP to inspect our hull and sort out all the damage from our electrifying experience. Upsi, my sailboat is sitting aground on a sandbank in a river. But no worries, I did this on purpose...to clean my hull. My sailboat has one speciality: TWIN KEELS. This enables me to dryfall with my boat in tidal water bodies to inspect my hull, to clean it and to do some repairs without having to spend a lot of money for a haul out. Once Karl's butt was nice and clean again, Maria and I took off on a coastal sail some 20nm down south to Jaramijo. On the way there, we traweld for micro plastic and found 13 plastic items, 8 of them being micro plastic, during a trawl of half an hour. We wanted to see how much trash we would find if we "trawled" on the beach in a straight line for the same amount of time. We only picked up what was in the reach of our arms and collected 248 items in half an hour. In this episode, we start where we left off… the end of day two of our 500 nautical mile test sail of the Kraken 50, in the middle of the Sea of Marmara. In true Mediterranean sailing style, the wind drops out… shortly followed by gusts! We get walloped with 30 knots of wind coming into anchor… very unexpected especially when we were wrapping up for the day! The next day we hoist the sails early again and much to Adams delight, he gets asked if he wants to drive the boat! Not only is this his dream come true but he then hits the highest speed record of the trip thus far at 12 knots… he is however racing himself. We have a fantastic morning of sailing and notice a few quirks of the Kraken that is quite unique compared to other boats!
