Don’t get me wrong, it can be beautiful, but for the vast majority of the time its just a whole lotta blue… or grey. Now typically our goal of sailing through open ocean is to arrive at beautiful and exotic destination. But this week the journey is definitely more important than the destination because we’re going to be sailing through the Corinth Canal, a man made ditch that cuts through 260 foot tall hills in the heart of Greece. The word ditch makes it sound way less cool than it actually is. We’ll be cruising through a super narrow waterway with cliffs extending straight up on either side. It’s one of the coolest experiences we’ve had while sailing the world and I’m super stoked to take you along for the ride. Now for the past couple of weeks we’ve been sailing across the Aegean Sea on our way to Montenegro where we need to recharge our Schengen Visa before sailing the rest of the way across the Mediterranean. But this week our story begins in a small remote anchorage off the Greek island of Kythnos. Getting a sailboat ready to support our family off-grid for months at a time is no easy feat. And for the past week the boat’s been on the hard and I’ve been doing some back breaking work. But we’ve only got 7 more days to finish all these projects before we’re scheduled to splash, and there is still a ton of work to be done. We are Ben and MP! Recently we decided to purchase a two-masted wooden schooner in Brazil. The fun detail about our story is that the boat we bought was sinking and relying on many bilge pumps to survive so we had to lift it onto the dry to start a full refit. Once the boat was lifted (for the first time in her life) we realized that the work needed was much more than expected. Between bailing or accepting the challenge, we decided to go for the second option. Watch us as we bring Yabá back to life with the help of an amazing team of traditional shipwrights, sharing every phase of the process, overcoming the highs and lows and having fun along the way. This week, Arabella slows down and cruises through the Great Dismal Swamp, navigating her first lock—the Deep Creek Lock—and leaving a small reminder that they were there ;-) After a provisioning run at the local Food Lion, Steve and Robin venture deeper into the Great Dismal Swamp, which—despite its name—is both serene and esoteric. Its history dates back to the 1700s, when the canal was dug by hand using slave labor, giving Steve and Robin pause to reflect on this history. While a visit to Waffle House wasn’t on the itinerary, Steve, Robin and Akiva found time for an an exploration mission down the feeder ditch and into Lake Drummond. Cypress trees are a new fauna for the crew, and they enjoy motoring around their wild trunks. Passing through the Great Dismal Swamp Visitor center, Arabella ends up in the Harbor of Hospitality: Elizabeth City, NC. They shop around downtown, exploring some adorable boutiques and perusing the South’s largest collection of rolling pins! On Christmas Day, Arabella sets sail across the Albemarle Sound and into the Alligator River, where the forecast does not deliver on its promises. The anchorage proves much too choppy for a comfortable night’s stay, and Steve and Robin have no choice but to head into the Pungo Canal and cross their fingers for a safe place to drop the hook. Steve has an idea, and sets off in Victoria to bring his vision to life…but, while turning Arabella around, Robin runs her aground—and this time, they’re really stuck. However, Steve is (kinda) excited to kedge the boat for the first time. He uses a kedge anchor in combination with an intricate system of lines and pulleys run back to shore to heel Arabella onto her side until she was able to float off the bank and back into deep water. It was a Christmas miracle! -------------------------- Sign up for our email newsletter: http://eepurl.com/hn3Qyv Acorn to Arabella started as a wooden boat building project in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve began the journey as an amateur wooden boat builder crafting a 38' wooden sailboat in his backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and now sailing the boat—sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that traditional wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY project continues beyond the boat shop, as Steve and crew travel and learn to cruise aboard the handmade wooden boat that they've built. Just kidding about all that, this channel is about a Siberian Laika named Akiva. -------------------------- If you are interested in supporting/helping here are a few ways: https://www.acorntoarabella.com/how-to-help Acorn to Arabella's wishlist: https://www.acorntoarabella.com/wishlistpriority TotalBoat supports A2A! We're getting ready to splash Ran back into the water but first we have to deal with a problem... In the meantime we go skiing and hang out in Seattle! We are a Swedish couple who wanted a different kind of life. So we moved aboard our sailboat Ran, a custom built Beason 40 in aluminium and untied the lines in the middle of the Swedish winter in January 2016. There is no set route and we will go where the wind and our minds take us. Yacht: 35 Hammercat 2021 Specs + Photos: https://hubs.ly/H0D9NMl0 Contact: Peter Wiersema / (954) 260-4913 / Peter@HammerYachts.com Location: Fort Lauderdale, FL Base Price: $349,000 Well-Equipped: $399,000 Elegant, fast, and fuel efficient. That’s what we like to see. The current sportfish and cruising power catamarans are not ideal power cats, so Hammer Yachts designed and built a new boat that embraces high performance, elegance, and fuel efficiency — the HammerCat 35. The HammerCat 35 is the first model in the next generation of sport fish power catamaran. Her build is strong and light through the use of epoxy and carbon fiber. We’re excited about this extraordinary new boat, so we’re highlighting the top 5 features of the Hammer Cat 35. Buckle up. She’s about to knock you off your feet. She’s fast and fuel efficient through a modern hull design and best construction techniques. No other power catamaran offers the smooth ride of a HammerCat, even in adverse conditions. The HammerCat 35 has a Carolina (flared) bow, a double-stepped hull, a high bridge-deck, and carefully designed weight distribution. The HammerCat 35 weighs 40% less than competitors’ vessels, which means it can use twin outboards as opposed to quads to reach the same speeds. That means this boat is double the efficiency and half the maintenance. With 2 x 350 horsepower engines, the HammerCat 35 has a range of more than 600m at 30 mph. Her top-speed is greater than 50 mph. Hammer Yachts (builders of the HammerCat) use race-boat technology to produce extremely durable hulls using epoxy, carbon fiber, and closed-cell foam. This creates the lightest yet strongest hulls, backed up by a 7-year warranty. Areas underdeck are filled with closed-cell foam to ensure that the HammerCat remains afloat if you hit an object while traveling. In case of an engine failure, the HammerCat 35 can plane on a single-engine and run at 20 mph, which unheard of in this size range. Hammer Yachts builds personalized vessels focused on your needs, ideas, and suggestions. The HammerCat 35 was designed and built as the ultimate sport fish power cat, but you can also adapt it to your needs for diving, family, or runabout. The HammerCat 35 is the next-generation power catamaran and available for sale with Denison Yachting. Contact your Denison Yacht broker to inquire about this boat. Safe sailing. Boat: White Shadow is a Van De Stadt ‘Seal’ 36 (11 metres). She is hand made in steel, 2004, with a round bilge (hull) and a modified coach roof. This makes her a ‘one off’ and in my opinion the most beautiful Van De Stadt 36 ever built. The camera gear: Main camera is a Panasonic Hc- V700 with a Rode External mic with a sponge and dead kitten attached. Action, underwater scenes and small blogging is done with two Osmo action cams. Some boat shots are done with a Dji gimbal camera. Editing: Final cut pro on a Macbook. Most of the material for each video is filmed over a period of several weeks or so and the editing of each episode is normally done over a day. This process can take longer if original music is used or permissions are needed for copyrighted materials etc. Much time is spent sorting out technical problems. In this case I normally get the help of a younger person who understands computerie stuff! There are also times when filming, editing and uploading is not possible due to being at sea or in locations with no internet access. Content: I have found that filming and releasing material over a period of time is better than doing ‘vlog’ style videos and trying to make episodes out of whats happened in a week, regardless if it’s good content or not. By filming over a period of time I can be more selective in what goes into each video. My aim is to avoid ‘bland and mundane’ and have at least one or two exciting and interesting events in every video. Every video has to be entertaining. Comments and being at sea: I love reading your comments. Most weeks Im able to read everyone. I cant reply to everybody but I do read and enjoy them. Keep them coming! There are times that It might seem I'm not on the internet for certain periods, this is normally when Im at sea on passage. While Im out on the Ocean I have completely no communications with the outside World. After a month in Marathon, we’re nearly finished with our DIY bimini. With just a few more finishing touches, including modifications for the backstay, the radar pole, and the solar panels, we’ll be ready to take off to The Bahamas. While in Boot Key Harbor, our friends Jordan & Randi of Learning the Lines were so kind to gift us two lobsters they had caught. We, however, had never caught, killed or cooked our own lobster, so this was quite the learning experience. Besides the mechanics of killing your own food, we confront the reality of taking another creature’s life for our own sustenance. We also discuss how our ePropulsion electric outboard has been performing, as well as our solar panels and Firefly house bank. Hope you enjoy! We are on a remote island with a unseaworthy boat. We need to get her to a qualified yard on another island and fully inspect her for damage. And we learn that not everyone is rooting for us... This video was shot before Covid and summarizes our experiences while repairing Archer. We are aware this is a little behind and are trying to catch up. If you want to see live updates, go here: LIVE UPDATES ON SOCIAL: https://www.the-sailing-family.com/ https://www.instagram.com/the_sailing_family/ https://www.facebook.com/the-sailing-family-voyage/ ----------------- ABOUT US: We are a family of five sailing around the world on our "dream boat," a performance catamaran named "Archer." Ten years ago (B.K. = "before kids"), we sailed a Lagoon 380 named "Honeymoon" halfway around the world to Sydney, Australia. Along the way we shared our experiences via YouTube and, by happenstance, created one of the first "sailing channels." We also realized what an incredible experience we were having and that someday we wanted to do it again, only this time with kids. OUR ROUTE has taken us from the Boston/Cape Cod area of the United States down to the Caribbean and through the Panama Canal. We have dealt with massive repairs in the South Pacific, the Coronavirus lock down in New Zealand, a Category 5 Cyclone in Fiji, and now we are cruising in Covid Free Australia. Videos for all of this to come! FAQ: More questions? What Cameras do we use? What's our budget? Check out our Frequently Asked Questions page on our website at: https://www.the-sailing-family.com/faq PLEASE COMMENT!: As a "family channel," we are required by Google to actively monitor all comments, but we still want to hear from you. Tell us what you think! THANKS for watching all. Subscribe and never miss an episode!
For more review, test, performance data, captain reports and more about the 2017 Sea Ray SLX - W 230, go to: http://www.boattest.com/review/sea-ray/3638_slx-w-230 Sea Ray designed the SLX-W 230 to be a luxurious family bowrider that can become a towsports machine with the push of a button on the dash-mounted touchscreen. She comes standard with three ballast tanks and the Dynamic Running Surface with Wake-Shaping tabs that instantly turn the boat into a towing platform that should impress serious wake surfers. She’s an inboard boat, which keeps the style consistent with the best in the industry. But here she’s got the engine in the traditional spot, under an aft sunpad rather than in a large box taking up the center of the cockpit. In this manner the family bowrider concept remains intact.

Wake up, get underway, breakfast underway, arrive to our next spot, explore, try to get some local seafood for dinner, and make a delicious dinner on the boat. A guided tour of the deck of Ben Stookey's Nonsuch 26 liveaboard cruising sailboat. Ben Stookey was introduced to sailing at a very young age by his parents. His father sailed a 21 foot sailboat from England to Antigua in the Mini Transat Race in 1977. When Ben was 14, his parents bought a boat in Finland and they spent years cruising all over Europe. Ben's first year of high school was in Spain. Today, Ben lives aboard a Nonsuch 26 named 'Swallow.' He is currently cruising the US East coast, and earning a living from computer programming remotely aboard his boat using a wifi connection. Ben's Blog: 'Life Aboard Swallow' is online at http://boat.stooks.me
After spending as much time in boatyards as we have, it might make you wonder: Is it all worth it? In this episode, we set off on our first overnighter of the season, with a destination of Marathon in the Florida Keys. We’ll finish our bimini here, which didn’t get done while we were in the yard. It seems like cruising is really just doing boat projects with a sprinkling of sailing here and there, so is there a payoff, or is the journey the destination? Hope you enjoy! Santo Stefano in the Mediterranean is what we will now call the "Island of Abandoned Things." To be fair, apparently on the other side of the island is a resort, but I checked the trip advisor reviews and they don't look great, so perhaps that'll be abandoned soon too! Santo Stefano has an old fortress, an abandoned quarry complete with a towering half finished stone statue of an Italian fascist leader, and some creepy/cool old buildings. Plus... this episode kicks off on a pretty serious note. What to do when other boats don't know, respect, or pay attention to the rules of the sea? We are lucky to still have our boat. After living at the dock (in exchange for work) in Isla Mujeres, Mexico for a little over a year, we are FINALLY ready to untie the lines and head to the anchorage to start prepping Atticus to cruise again. We assemble our FX-23 Storm Anchor from Fortress Anchors and our 45lb Mantus Marine primary anchor to prep for the move, and we haul out Atticus for a bottom job, to raise the waterline and to handle a couple of quick projects. Our last day in Isla Mujeres is jam packed with last minute to-do's, lots of emotion, and plenty of self reflection. Thailand was one of the first countries affected and we took the adequate precautions early to protect ourselves. If you would like to contribute towards Nandji's repairs please use this link. Thank you. http://paypal.me/SailingNandji If you are getting something out of our videos, please become a Patron to help support our production and adventures. Get Unseen footage, Exclusive vids and the inside scoop! http://www.patreon.com/Nandji In this episode of Sailing Nandji, we clear out of Thailand and begin our journey of the Indian Ocean crossing. Before we depart the area and head west, we first go south to the island of Langkawi, Malaysia where we planned to provision for the coming months of sailing. The world was on edge at this stage as the pandemic really started and countries were confused. Borders were still open so we headed to Langkawi and prepare for what would lie ahead. After clearing out of Thailand you have 48 hours to depart, as it was late in the afternoon, we thought we would rest for the night and have our last meal cooked by someone else. We spend our last Thailand Baht and then the next morning we are sailing! With the perfect weather for sailing, we head out to sea under motor. We hoist full sail and with a gentle breeze on our back, set up to fly Unicorn Fart, our A-symetrical spinnaker. This is only the second time flying the sail but it is such a great sail to play with and it is so much fun to use! We are en-route back to the scene of where our mischief occurred, as we have unfinished business with a reef! With no sailing experience, we bought a yacht, got it blue water cruising ready and set off from Australia sailing to the Pacific! We have since cruised through New Caledonia, Vanuatu, the Solomon islands, Papua New Guinea, Indonesia and then onto the boat yard in Malaysia to prepare for the years to come. With a new engine, we continued onto Thailand, then back down into Indonesia and specifically West Sumatra to live the island life and chase the surf. With our Sailing plans changing, we returned to Thailand to wait for the weather and begin our journey to the northern route of the Indian Ocean to Sri Lanka before heading south across the Indian Ocean once cyclone season has finished and the trade winds begin! We were on our shake down sail when the mooring we were on failed on our home ended up on the reef. We saved the old girl and got her back to the boat yard for repairs to continue on our adventure! We departed the east coast of Australia in July 2017 and have since sailed over 10000nm offshore. We have explored some amazing countries and met some beautiful people along the way. We have experienced so many different and diverse cultures, dived pristine reefs, surfed solo in the middle of nowhere, spent weeks at sea, dealt with storms, big waves, strong winds and had the time of our lives doing it! The adventure is just beginning as we sail West with the trades around the World!
