Before we depart the area and head west, we first go south to the island of Langkawi, Malaysia where we planned to provision for the coming months of sailing. The world was on edge at this stage as the pandemic really started and countries were confused. Borders were still open so we headed to Langkawi and prepare for what would lie ahead. After clearing out of Thailand you have 48 hours to depart, as it was late in the afternoon, we thought we would rest for the night and have our last meal cooked by someone else. We spend our last Thailand Baht and then the next morning we are sailing! With the perfect weather for sailing, we head out to sea under motor. We hoist full sail and with a gentle breeze on our back, set up to fly Unicorn Fart, our A-symetrical spinnaker. This is only the second time flying the sail but it is such a great sail to play with and it is so much fun to use! We are en-route back to the scene of where our mischief occurred, as we have unfinished business with a reef! With no sailing experience, we bought a yacht, got it blue water cruising ready and set off from Australia sailing to the Pacific! We have since cruised through New Caledonia, Vanuatu, the Solomon islands, Papua New Guinea, Indonesia and then onto the boat yard in Malaysia to prepare for the years to come. With a new engine, we continued onto Thailand, then back down into Indonesia and specifically West Sumatra to live the island life and chase the surf. With our Sailing plans changing, we returned to Thailand to wait for the weather and begin our journey to the northern route of the Indian Ocean to Sri Lanka before heading south across the Indian Ocean once cyclone season has finished and the trade winds begin! We were on our shake down sail when the mooring we were on failed on our home ended up on the reef. We saved the old girl and got her back to the boat yard for repairs to continue on our adventure! We departed the east coast of Australia in July 2017 and have since sailed over 10000nm offshore. We have explored some amazing countries and met some beautiful people along the way. We have experienced so many different and diverse cultures, dived pristine reefs, surfed solo in the middle of nowhere, spent weeks at sea, dealt with storms, big waves, strong winds and had the time of our lives doing it! The adventure is just beginning as we sail West with the trades around the World! In this episode we are in La Coruña, Spain. During our two week stay we get to explore the city. We also get our gennaker sail set up on our new furler and hoist it for the first time. We then continue our sail south and sail along the coast of death (Costa da morte) to Muxía, a small fishing village 48 Nm from La Coruña. In Muxía we just make a quick stop but we have time to visit the must-see places as Centuario da Virxe da Barca, the old church just next to the sea. We sailed a brand new Corsair 37 from Tahiti to Tikehau, straight after commissioning her. Big question was how would a trimaran handle the trip ? It's a 175 nautical miles journey upwind right in the rainy season (meaning big squalls all night) before we reach the calm turquoise waters inside the lagoon. Not only did she sail very fast but she proved very stable, super easy to manage and with enough room inside to welcome 5 people for a night at sea. Amazingly enough we did not break anything which normally never happens on a new boat! She is also super cool to steer. We tried the autopilot but quickly went back to manual steering as it was so thrilling. Definitely a big winner, that I would not be scared to sail across oceans while delivering top performance and pleasure. Ahoy, in this episode we talk about anchors. We tested the ULTRA Anchor in comparison to the ROCNA Anchor. With both anchors we did exactly the same maneuvers to compare their performance. First we anchored like we do all the time, backing up to set the anchor, but then we drove ZERO to the other side, pretending the wind or the currents are changing. That means we broke it free and reset it immediately. A situation which happens all the time and a good anchor should reset quickly. Both anchors performed very well but in our experience the ULTRA outperformed the ROCNA with faster setting and resetting and more holding power by digging way deeper into the sand than the ROCNA did. And on top of that the quality of the used materials and overall appearance is outstanding and the anchor looks like it is produced without making any compromises. Well Done!! Before our last two bulkheads go in, we need to make sure they sit in their EXACT place, as there is no margin of error. Because the large transom piece we received with our second container sits as a cap over these two bulkheads, we need to make sure each edge is lining up. But because this piece is 24 ft wide and weighs over 500 pounds, it's not easy to bring it in and out for a dry fit. So, we're going to do our best with measurements between the two and hope for the best. As we go to glass in bulkead 8 though, we find that our new vinyl ester resin is not behaving well in these summer temperatures, and is making it very hard for us to work. A slight set-back, but we know we'll find a way around it to make everything work.
