Boat: White Shadow is a Van De Stadt ‘Seal’ 36 (11 metres). She is hand made in steel, 2004, with a round bilge (hull) and a modified coach roof. This makes her a ‘one off’ and in my opinion the most beautiful Van De Stadt 36 ever built. The camera gear: Main camera is a Panasonic Hc-v700. Most shots are done with an external mic (Shenggu sg 108) with a sponge and dead kitten attached. Action stuff and small blogging is done with a Sony Hdr-as30v. Underwater video Gopro3plus. Editing: Final cut pro on a Macbook. Most of the material for each video is filmed over a period of several weeks or so and the editing of each episode is normally done over a day. This process can take longer if original music is used or permissions are needed for copyrighted materials etc. Much time is spent sorting out technical problems. In this case I normally get the help of a younger person who understands computerie stuff! There are also times when filming, editing and uploading is not possible due to being at sea or in locations with no internet access. Content: I have found that filming and releasing material over a period of time is better than doing ‘vlog’ style videos and trying to make episodes out of whats happened in a week, regardless if it’s good content or not. By filming over a period of time I can be more selective in what goes into each video. My aim is to avoid ‘blar bar mundane’ and have at least one or two exciting and interesting events in every video. Every video has to be entertaining. I've tried to go through as much as possible in this video with the setup, mounting, disabling of the motors and tariffs in this video and I will add any extra things we find out that maybe of use in the description here. So any thing we find out I'll list along with good information that we always seem to get in the comments. Of course Elon doesn't seem to let things standstill for long so we will also try and reflect any changes in policy, hardware and tariffs etc in the description here. When it gets too out of date I'll make a new one, this film was shot in the first week of December 2023. ...& please remember SUBSCRIBE! Okay here’s some updates: Firstly it seems from the comments and some further research I’ve done that the cheapest way to continue to get data offshore is not to switch to Premium Mobile as we did but to just flick the switch on Premium data on your standard mobile tariff when you’re off shore. You will be charged somewhere between 2-3 dollars/euros per Gb but this is cheaper than paying 300 euros for 50 Gb as we did. Update Aug 2024; Things are toughening up with Starlink. In May when we first sailed up the Windward island chain in the Caribbean with the unit on the standard Mobile regional tariff which for us registered in the US is $150/month for unlimited data. We were fine to just stay on this all the way up even offshore out of sight of land. By July when I sailed back down to Trinidad to escape Hurricane Beryl as soon as I was a few miles offshore I got the 'you seem to be offshore' message and had to turn on the priority data which means you pay $2/Gb. Another thing that's happening is that certain countries are forcing Starlink to turn off the service until an agreement is made with the country because it is affecting sales of standard mobile data on the island. So Starlink was turned off in Bonaire at the beginning on August. It happened on the last day we were there and we got a message that Starlink was not available in the country we were in, we got no warning, it just switched off at lunchtime for everyone there. There is talk of the same thing now happening in Curacou. The other development is that Starlink has issues a statement saying the Mobile tariff is only meant for occasional use away from home and if you stay away from your registered country for more than 2 months you will be cut off. Obviously this is pretty serious for us cruisers sailing the world. The date for this to start happening is today (21st Aug) it's 8am in the morning here and fortunately we are still connected so hoping it remains that way! Update June 2024: There is now a software function to leave the dish horizontal, so you don't have to drill into your dish and disable the motors any more. Update feb 2024: We used the method above while crossing the Atlantic i'e flicking the switch to premium as soon as we left land. It worked very well. For the month when we crossed we ended up with a bill of just over $300 to get proper weather forcasts, emails facetime calls & even upload an episode while offshore! It was a rolly crossing with big seas so Starlink would tale 15-20 mins to connect every time we turned it on. A few times mid Atlantic it took longer, up to an hour on one occasion, I assume because there are fewer satellites? Once reaching Trinidad I contacted Starling to see if there was an official way to switch the registry to the US as out unit being purchased and registered in Europe could only go back on the cheap unlimited service in the continent it is registered in. The official answer from Starlink is they will not reregister a unit. The work around for this is to sell the unit to yourself using a different email. Starlink does allow for this and gives instructions on how to do it in the Starlink app. It wil guide you through and even has a system where by you add the details of the 'new owner' when you 'sell it' and an email will be sent to them (you!) with an activation link. The only thing we found that made me nervouse as we did this was the fact thet you have to disconnect the Starlink and then pay for the new contract as the new owner before activating it. For us though at anchor in Trinidad with no other internet connection at the time it made things slightly tricky as we had to go ashore and get that part done befpre returning to the boat to activate it. All went well though so now we have our Starlink back on the unlimited tarrif, we registered it at Judys fathers address which means we pay £150/month, a bit more than we were paying in Europe but considering it's unlimited super fast broadband we are fine with that. I hear the new standard dish is non articulating, slightly heavier and larger and has an IP rating of 57 rather than 54 of the old 'Dishy' so that's good. Does anyone have experience of it though and know the really useful things like the draw? If you do please leave a comment.

We depart from our home in the Florida Keys in search of bottom dwelling deep sea fish. We begin the day catching live bait called ballyhoo. There after we head to our first spot on the patch reefs in search of mutton snapper & grouper. We weren't so lucky with grouper but we filled the box with mutton snapper. Eventually we decided to make a move further offshore in search of yellow eye snapper. To our surprise every drop we caught a fish so we decided we had more than enough and took the trip home. Once we arrived at the dock we cleaned our catch in preparation for a delicious catch clean cook fish taco dinner. We’re sailing. Karen is looking great in her bikini. Went out on Saturday with little wind. Sunday the air picked up. Used our Kobalt drill and Winch Bit to make our winches electric. Call me lame but it's nice to use when raising the main or even trimming the genoa. Tried sailing to the islands to see what was happening on the Labor Day weekend. Not a lot of wind on that day so motored halfway. There were lots of boats and even a seaplane. Adjusted the Dutchman once again, still may not be tuned well, but does make flaking the mainsail easier. We eventually saw up to 7 kts close hauled with about 15 deg of lean in 15 kt air. The mainsail is a little tired. The fixed prop slows us down a bit. Perhaps a feathering or folding is in the future. Thank you to our subscribers! We appreciate your support. Ternate City is a bustling, busy city of contrasts: old and new, traditional and contemporary, colorful and dreary, clean and dirty. We saw only a small portion of it, but were very fortunate to be invited to many unique events, such as traditional Indonesian wedding ceremonies ranging from those of middle class to the upper echelon, (mayors and sultans) (See our clip covering the Wedding of the son of the Sultan of Ternate.) We toured the Sultan's Palace, visited the traditional market, the modern mall, saw fabrication of Ternate batik craft and food stuffs, saw churches and mosques, and were invited to see and have lunch at a very nice Homestay up in the heights overlooking the city and the sea. We would like to thank Mr.Samin Hamudu for making it possible for us to film so many weddings, and their traditions, and also for being tour guide for many of the things we saw here. Welcome to Episode 15! This week we're in Culebra and Culebrita, Puerto Rico! We fall in love with this amazing country (may or may not have something to do with all the delicious tacos we feast on!) and spend a night in the wonderfully quiet anchorage in Culebrita. On our way to the mainland we make a grave tactical error when we trust the weather forecast which states the max wind speed will be 8 knots. Thinking we've got a day of motoring ahead of us, we don't bother lifting the dinghy and instead simply tow it behind us, outboard attached and all. When we're hit by a squall with 25 knots of wind and lumpy seas, our outboard nuts start to loosen under the strain and Nick has to jump in to try and save the outboard and dinghy! She is hand made in steel, 2004, with a round bilge (hull) and a modified coach roof. This makes her a ‘one off’ and in my opinion the most beautiful Van De Stadt 36 ever built. The camera gear: Main camera is a Panasonic Hc-v700. Most shots are done with an external mic (Shenggu sg 108) with a sponge and dead kitten attached. Action stuff and small blogging is done with a Sony Hdr-as30v. Underwater video Gopro3plus. Editing: Final cut pro on a Macbook. Most of the material for each video is filmed over a period of several weeks or so and the editing of each episode is normally done over a day. This process can take longer if original music is used or permissions are needed for copyrighted materials etc. Much time is spent sorting out technical problems. In this case I normally get the help of a younger person who understands computerie stuff! There are also times when filming, editing and uploading is not possible due to being at sea or in locations with no internet access. Content: I have found that filming and releasing material over a period of time is better than doing ‘vlog’ style videos and trying to make episodes out of whats happened in a week, regardless if it’s good content or not. By filming over a period of time I can be more selective in what goes into each video. My aim is to avoid ‘blar bar mundane’ and have at least one or two exciting and interesting events in every video. Every video has to be entertaining. Sewing, tideminders, funnel clouds, hatch cover, lights, dancing, threesome Steve whips out and lubricates the Singer 237 to sew a cover for the aft campionway hatch. It’s a super heavy duty sewing machine and ours was built in 1957. We added an extra light in the salon and now there are three in the ceiling. Karen changes the water filter. Our dock mate is selling his boat and offered us his tideminders. We dinghied over to his former slip to retrieve them. Tideminders are balls you put dock lines through to allow the lines to ride up and down the piling as the tide levels change. It makes being in a fixed dock kind of like having a floating dock. While Steve was changing the battery of the Haybusa motorcycle, Karen noticed a couple of nearby funnel clouds. A little scary and we’re not sure if they touched down over water to become waterspouts. Just happy they didn’t come our way.
