She is hand made in steel, 2004, with a round bilge (hull) and a modified coach roof. This makes her a ‘one off’ and in my opinion the most beautiful Van De Stadt 36 ever built. The camera gear: Main camera is a Panasonic Hc-v700. Most shots are done with an external mic (Shenggu sg 108) with a sponge and dead kitten attached. Action stuff and small blogging is done with a Sony Hdr-as30v. Underwater video Gopro3plus. Editing: Final cut pro on a Macbook. Most of the material for each video is filmed over a period of several weeks or so and the editing of each episode is normally done over a day. This process can take longer if original music is used or permissions are needed for copyrighted materials etc. Much time is spent sorting out technical problems. In this case I normally get the help of a younger person who understands computerie stuff! There are also times when filming, editing and uploading is not possible due to being at sea or in locations with no internet access. Content: I have found that filming and releasing material over a period of time is better than doing ‘vlog’ style videos and trying to make episodes out of whats happened in a week, regardless if it’s good content or not. By filming over a period of time I can be more selective in what goes into each video. My aim is to avoid ‘blar bar mundane’ and have at least one or two exciting and interesting events in every video. Every video has to be entertaining. Sewing, tideminders, funnel clouds, hatch cover, lights, dancing, threesome Steve whips out and lubricates the Singer 237 to sew a cover for the aft campionway hatch. It’s a super heavy duty sewing machine and ours was built in 1957. We added an extra light in the salon and now there are three in the ceiling. Karen changes the water filter. Our dock mate is selling his boat and offered us his tideminders. We dinghied over to his former slip to retrieve them. Tideminders are balls you put dock lines through to allow the lines to ride up and down the piling as the tide levels change. It makes being in a fixed dock kind of like having a floating dock. While Steve was changing the battery of the Haybusa motorcycle, Karen noticed a couple of nearby funnel clouds. A little scary and we’re not sure if they touched down over water to become waterspouts. Just happy they didn’t come our way. Trouble is- we were in a pandemic, had a university degree to finish, on a student budget, only had ever sailed dingies, oh and didn’t have a boat. The dream seemed not only unrealistic but pretty insane. However, we worked hard, finished our degrees, worked as many hours as physically possible, saved with all our might, got experience and in March 2022 bought our very own sailboat, Teulu. Having little sailing experience and being a young couple, we have encountered a tonne of hurdles and made plenty of mistakes! but for every downfall, there has always been a reason to dust ourselves off and carry on. We continued our voyage up the Gulf of California, stopping at the beautiful crescent shaped harbor on Isla San Francisco before sailing north to Puerto Escondido and the Loreto National Marine Park. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is full of beautiful island anchorages, an abandoned salt mining town, and some of the best panaramic views of our cruise so far. We sailed past breaching whales and pods of dolphins, the rich life in the sea contrasting to the desert ruggedness on land. After so much time on the sea, we also headed inland to see a historic mission high in the mountains at San Javier. Julia is a traditionally built wooden boat, planked in fir on oak frames. She was launched in 1960, and is still a great boat for cruising the world's oceans! Carolyn's drawing, printed in an enlarged version, serves as Steve's handy mapping tool for what will be the power system for the Arabella. Our two biggest power draws, as of now, will be the refrigerator, the watermaker, and any video-making equipment we have on board. We're testing out a complete, enclosed battery system for use on and off the boat. Steve (and all of us here, in fact) have relied on some kind of enclosed reliable power supply, some equipped with an inverter and some with attached solar panels, to have the adventures we've had on land and water. Since the get-go, Steve has been wondering if there's something out there that could take the place of a pieced-together system of batteries, inverter, solar controller, solar panels, etc. powerful enough to take care of, say, guests' phones, power tools at the bench, or even the entire house needs of Arabella. We started to test one that was made for off-grid self-reliance. We're going with conduit and bus bars in junction boxes for the tinned wire we'll be running throughout Arabella for the 12V electrical system, and Steve gets to demonstrating what he's gotten so far for equipment and what that will mean as far as the installation goes.
